Hand Cream Recommendations - Heavy Duty One

fionaann · 02/12/2008 22:40

Ever since my daughter was born 15 months ago my hands have been in a dreadful state - red raw, dry and rough. I use the Hemp hand cream from Body Shop which is okay but was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations?

e45 cream works for me. or diprobase.

fionaann · 02/12/2008 22:45

Thanks lovelydear. Have tried E45 but it doesn't seem to do much good - my hands seem to get in a state really easily. Will look into diprobase.

Cutex 8 hour rescue cream does the trick for me everytime! I put it on at bedtime and my hands are soft by morning.

DoubleBluff · 02/12/2008 22:49

Elizabet Ardern 8 hr cream ( get it on offer in TJ Hughes}
Aveena

littlelamb · 02/12/2008 22:49

Ah, was about to recommend the hemp one. Are you using the one that comes in a tube? Seems to make my hands amazing. If not, try Lush (you can probably talk them into a free sample too )

moondog · 02/12/2008 22:54

Neutrogena is the best.
Have spent years looking for perfect handcream and this is it.

zoggs · 02/12/2008 22:56

If you're feeling flush or someone's treating you try Jurlique. I get mine from Space NK. I have really awful hands, cracked and sore especially in winter (plus I'm a nurse). It's not cheap but it really does work so probably is actually good value. Without it, my hands make me look like I work on a building site.

fionaann · 02/12/2008 22:58

Thanks very much for all your suggestions. The trouble is I want to get all your recommendations!

You need someone really oily or waxy, but that will absorb well. I like Atrixo, Norwegian Formula and Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter.

zenandtheartofbaking · 02/12/2008 23:27

Atrixo or Aveda "Hand Relief". Yes, I know. I was mocked on a train by strangers while using it once and haven't used it since. But it was good.

blithedance · 02/12/2008 23:42

Norwegian formula here. Is not expensive so worth trying and you can buy it anywhere. I first started using it when I really did work on building sites and was out in all weathers.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 03/12/2008 09:08

My hands have been very cracked, sore and sensitive since DS started weaning; most creams just seem to irritate and make the skin itchy. The three I have found that really help are Dr Hauschka (expensive so I only have it as a treat), Aveeno (good, quite sporadically in stock at Boots though) and recently, Simple's new one which I think is called Derma or something (white tube with green writing) -- specifically for this sort of problem. Thanks again for all your advice. Have only recently started to post on MN and it's amazing how kind and helpful people are. I have some cotton gloves somewbere - just need to find them.

Clarins hand cream, smells seriously lovely and works. You could put it on your Xmas pressie list as a subtle hint to your DH .
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour is good too.
Lush Helping Hands is pretty heavy duty too, its greasy but works. (I will admit to working for Lush but I used the stuff long before I worked for them).

mistlethrush · 03/12/2008 11:15

And if you want to kick start the treatment - try the cracked heels creams - also great on hands (couldn't find my hand cream one night and thought, why not, and ended up with better condition hands in the morning than I do from any handcream)

georgiemum · 03/12/2008 11:18

A good tip is to lather on the cream (E45 and Nutralia - is that the one the norwegian fishermen are supposed to use?) before popping on your rubber gloves to do the washing up. It really makes them soft! Unfortunately you do have to do the washing up though!

eggnoggins · 03/12/2008 12:07

3rd for Neutrogena Norweigan formula- it's not particularly glamourous, no added smellies etc... but it is the best out there by long way

georgiemum · 03/12/2008 12:10

On Nutrogena. I always get those 2 muddled up. The rubber gloves trick does work though.

katch · 03/12/2008 12:12

Another vote for Neutrogena (for some reason the unscented one works best for me), also cotton gloves and Vaseline on the raggy cuticles.

Cracked heel cream is also good - Flexitol is the best (creaks off with flakes falling off hands and feet).

katch · 03/12/2008 12:14

Haven't tried this, but plastic bags under the cotton gloves/ socks is supposed to be good.

However, DH already has to witness me slathering up and putting on the gloves and socks - don't think he could cope with plazzie bags as well!

IAmNotHere · 03/12/2008 12:15

L'Occitane. Gorg.

bellabelly · 03/12/2008 12:15

Aveeno is ACE!

malovitt · 03/12/2008 12:19

The thick almond hand cream (pinky beige packaging) from the Body Shop - don't know the exact name as my pot is in the car. It's the only hand cream that has made a difference to me, especially since I started using the matching hand wash as well. About £7 a pot but lasts for ages.
