Oh god. Jeans. What is a realistic budget for a pair of jeans? And why does shopping for jeans have to be so depressing?

I actually stopped wearing jeans a few years ago because I don't know where to get them and what to buy. I think I really need a pair now.

What's fashionable?
What's flattering?
Where should I buy them?
How much will they cost me?
Why does even the thought of jeans shopping make me want to reach for the gin?

I'm about a size 14 and probably skittle shaped with a dreadful post baby belly.

Help.

For everyday - New Look "Hula" for a tenner. May not be the height of fashion but they do the job.

mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:14

Whats Fashionable: Well, sounds like you will need boot cut if you are a skittle. How tall are you?

I have heard folk on here rave about Hula jeans from New Look, you could try them. I like Dotty P's for jeans, they have loads of different styles.

Cost... I never pay more than £40 tops for a pair. but then I own about 6 pairs!

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:15

5'4"

Am looking online for Hula jeans now.

I like TopShop jeans personally. They have just the right balance of firmness/stretchiness and I like the colours. They cost about £40.

My tip would be to avoid any faux-distressed jeans...you know, the ones with really defined, pale, "worn" areas on the arse and thighs. They look ugly and cheap IMO.

NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:21

i bought some 'skinny' jeans from next recently

i am 5'8" and bought long and normal length

i thnk they were about £25

i normally buy bench or white stuff bu actually i am made up with these esp the longer length

i went to take a pair back and change them for he longer ones but when i got there all had sold out in middling sizes although should be back in now

i am tallish and not that thin post baby but these are well worth the dosh

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:22

Topshop is not a happy shopping experience. I feel old and fat and frumpy, and I have two children in a double buggy which seems to piss Topshop staff and customers off.

My browser won't let me open New Look.

Am pleased people are saying £40ish. Was wondering if my previous disasters were because I was being too cheap.

I think I want something not too tight on the bum, and why does my arse always rise up out of the back of my jeans when I bend over? But I don't want M&S high waisted mum-jeans.

Maybe I could try Fatface?

I don't think I could do skinny jeans. I'd look like a sausage.

Gap. Lots of different cuts (for all body shapes); good quality; you can try them on to your heart's content.

BodenGroupie · 30/11/2008 20:25

Got a bargain pair of Tommy Hilfigers in TK Maxx - low rise at the front but high rise at the back. Means I can still breathe after eating but don't flash my knickers.

NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:25

brocolli but you could

i said to the girl 'i am 40 and do NOT want to look like mutton' and she took me to these

she said 'all the staff wear them' they are not TOOO skinny but i feel at least in the right decade fashion wise

PerkinWarbeck · 30/11/2008 20:27

uniqlo are a godsend for the skittle shape

try the bootcut as per the link, or check instore for wide leg. I heart them and have 3 pairs.

NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:27

i have these from white stuff middle of the road straightish cu and mid rise

very easy

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:28
  • but on the subject of skinny jeans, I've seen a couple of little girls (2ish) in skinny jeans recently and it looked so cute. I'm not generally in to 'fashion' for children, but they were sweet.

To those of you suggesting boot cut - are boot cut not now horribly mummish?

Ooh I like those white stuff ones.

I think I'd like to know more about low cut front and high cut at the back. Genius!

ds is 2 and has the skinniest legs ever -he has a couple of pairs and looks edible!!

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 20:31

I second Anna's suggestion to go to Gap. I find Topshop's jeans trendier, but somehow () they don't fit me well.

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:32

What about the Boyfriend jeans shape on this page? Could I do that?

It's a fine line between not wanting to look all squidged in like a sausage, but also not wanting to look as though you're wearing baggy clothes to hide under.

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 20:33

Bootcut jeans are back. Actually wide legged jeans are very trendy at the moment (try H&M for 1970s wide leg jeans)

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:33

Oooh I could get two pairs. A skinny pair for wearing with tunics and dresses, and another pair (tbc) for wearing with tops.

OP posts:
BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:35

I could get to a Gap. Maybe that's the way to go.

Someone said about not getting distressed looking jeans and I agree. But dark denim? Light? Coloured denim ?

OP posts:
mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:36

No boot cut are not passe, they are flattering and versatile. Get a cutting edge pair of skinnies and a boyfriend pair AND a bootcut pair and you'll thank me in the long run. Make sure they are nice and long in the crotch, then no muffin tops.

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 20:36

Dark denim.
I'll be honest with you, I don't like the colour of those New Look jeans

mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:37

dark denim skinnies...normal boyfriend, maybe dark bootcuts. Get them longer rather than shorter.
