Finding out which colours suit you...

Are there any websites with tips on this?

I know you can go to 'Colour me Beautiful' and have a consultation but can't afford that at the moment.

Does anyone know what the criteria are?

I am wondering if it makes any difference if your hair is coloured (ie not your natural colour) or is it all based on skintone...?

I know some people can tell from just trying stuff on but I can't - I just seem to look shite in everything at the moment.

what colouring are you? I know what colours suit me and I am blonde with blue eyes and fair skin..I am sure if you tell us your colouring someone will come along and tell you

twoluvlykids · 25/11/2008 18:56

one of the Trinny and Susannah books has lots of tips, can't remember which one though, maybe there's a website by them.

TheRealMrsOsborne · 25/11/2008 18:58

This website is useful but it is designed for men i think, it will at least help you sort out what season you are and gives you colour swatches.

"Look at thiswww.askandyaboutclothes.com/Tutorials/CindyBuschColorAnalysis.htm"

TheRealMrsOsborne · 25/11/2008 18:58

That didn't quite work but the link works

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 18:59

my mother has been into this since the seventies, my whole family can tell at a glance which season you are.

you need to see if your skin has warm / yellow undertones or cool / blue / pink undertones

then your hair and eyes.

but if you look at your clothes are there some thibngs that you have bought that you like but never where cos every time you put it on it just doesn't feel right? well that is the wrong colour for you , and any clothes that you like to wear all the time even if they don't quite fit the occasion then they are probably the right colours.

if you've dyed your hair it gets confusing

ilovejonty · 25/11/2008 19:22

I have blue eyes and very pale skin. My natural hair colour is dark blonde/ light brown. Lots of grey in hair though so currently coloured darker brown. Haven't a clue what undertones my skin has though! I always like wearing navy blue and people say black suits me (although I try not to wear it very often).

*ok i can do this.....to find out your skin tone, look in the mirror after exercise, or manic housework! warm skin tones are generally yellow toned.... neutral tones are people who dont colour even after exercise, pink tones are the ones who go bright red after any form of exersion! and yes its all based on skin tone

barbie1 · 25/11/2008 19:29

If you have v pale skin i would think you are cool tones, so stick with blues, purple, pink etc etc clothes and make up...
You can have cool brown shades so thats probaly what shade your hair is ....

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 20:00

I think you are a summer. Do you suit grey?
which colour jewellry gold or silver?

BobtheWoodmouse · 25/11/2008 20:58

Not sure if this works for everyone but I was told to look at the veins on your inner wrists ie palms up. If they look green then you are 'warm'; if they look blue then you are 'cool'. Warm skin tones look good with yellow-based colours and gold metals and cool skin tones look good with blue-based colours and silver metals. Only cools should wear pure black or white.

I was 'done' many years ago and I am an 'Autumn' - warm and dull. I did wear 'good' colours for a while but in the last few years I reverted to a wardrobe that is 90% black, oh and I wear silver jewellery too, lol, go figure.

I quite like the book 'Colour me Confident' It doesn't do seasons like spring summer etc but warm, cools, softs and brights etc. It's good but I like it best because it shows you how to wear black no matter what your skin tone. It also goes into body shape a bit and uses photos of 'normal' shaped women.

HaventSleptForAYear · 25/11/2008 21:02

I would be interested in this too because I am HOPELESS at knowing what colours suit me.

Your tips for the OP are a bit confusing for me - I sound similar (v. pale skin, blue eyes, naturally light brown hair) but I definitely go bright pink at the slightest thing. My veins are blue though!

Can anyone help?

BobtheWoodmouse · 25/11/2008 21:10

HavntSlept - you sound like a cool to me so you would look for blue or pink-based clothing/makeup rather than yellow-based clolours - ie choose raspberry-red rather than tomato-red, pure white rather than cream, greys rather than beiges, emerald green rather than sage green etc. Hope this helps.

ravenAK · 25/11/2008 21:13

Oooh, I can do this!

Are your eyes bright blue/turquoise (warm - probably summer given your hair colour) or pale, greyish, or sludgey-greeny-blue (cool - probably spring)?

You're unlikely to be an autumn (red/brown hair, green or hazel eyes) or a winter (very dark hair, or brown with no red, 'icey' blue/grey or VERY dark eyes, pale skin).

One way is to look at yourself wearing cream, then bright white. One of them should msake you look vibrant & the other mildly hungover - if unsure, ask brutally honest friend...If you look better in cream, you're warm, if white, you're cool

Dyeing your hair - you should ideally work out your 'type' & then stick with it (ie. as a winter with naturally v dull mid-brown hair, I can do jet black, but would look rotten with red or honey-blonde - too warm)

ilovejonty · 26/11/2008 08:34

Hmmm... I deinitely go red after exercise etc. Veins are greeny. I prefer silver jewellery. Maybe I should upload some photos of me wearing white and cream and ask for a vote?!

I sat in recently while my friend had her colours done and it really was an eye-opener. Fab. Not Colour Me Beautiful, but similar thing done by a local woman. She had to sit with all these thousands of coloured sheets close to her skin... even just slightly different tones made a heck of a lot of difference.

The woman didn't really say much at all, she just left it to my friend to see what was blindingly obvious to all about colours that suited her.

I wouldn't trust a website or book (specially not Tranny and Wotsit), you have to have it done properly. Get someone to book you a sesh for a Xmas prezzie? Only cost her £30 for about an hour and a half in her own home.

The rules seem to be black does NOT suit everyone, it drains most. And white is a no no as it makes you look old!

sammysam · 26/11/2008 09:02

oh good god-now i know i'm weird! I started a thread about this about a year ago and then decided to do a colour me session-but never have! I was given their book for christmas but I can honestly say i really don't think i fit into any!
Sorry to hi jack but can I just ask what people think?
I have pale skin+moles and tan quite easily (altough my face never really does but doesn't burn either?!) I have blonde hair on the darker side and hazel eyes (brown, green and yellow), I get red when I exercise and my veins look blue (although some maybe look a bit green). I look like i am dead if i wear navy, grey, dark green, maroon etc. To be honest there really are very few colours that don't make me look bad and i love colours so much that i go through phases of not caring and wearing what i want (but i stay away from those mentioned as they are the worst) but i really am fed up of looking so dreadful
What does anyone think?

sammysam · 26/11/2008 09:04

Puppymonkey-where is this woman-i really need to see her !!!!

PuppyMonkey · 26/11/2008 09:07

She is in Long Eaton, Derbyshire... Oh crikey, I can't remember her name and will have to ask my friend but she's a teacher so you might have to wait a bit til I get back to you...!

fishie · 26/11/2008 09:16

i had me colours done nearly 2 years ago and oh it has made such a difference, coupled with working out shape clothes suit me. i've saved loads of money in unsuitable purchases. i went to house of colour, it was £60 but central London so i should think that is top end.

sammysam you sound very yellowy = warm so anything not blue or pink hence navy and maroon are not good. turquoise would be ok. but what you really need help with is the intensity / brightness of colours to wear, impossible to tell whether you would be better in beige or ochre.

comma · 26/11/2008 09:42

i had mine done once. It has totally changed the way I shop.

sammysam · 26/11/2008 10:27

I'm in dorset so that may be a bit far to go.

Maybe i should bite the bullet and get it for a christmas pressie...i keep putting it off as there are other things i need but if it really does make that much difference i really should do it..off to google now!

kalo12 · 28/11/2008 10:09

you sound like a summer,

Mercedes · 28/11/2008 10:23

Can I jump in and ask about me cos I think I'm winter but then I read things which confuses me?

I go bright red at the slightest hint of excercise. I go red in the sun and freckle slightly although my skin goes a very pale golden brown shade easily.

Got bright blue eyes and used to have very dark brown hair. My hair is now got steaks of silver through it - although it still obbvoulsy dark. Got blue veins.

I like to wear bright jewel colours- nothing dull or muted and I can't wear cream.

kalo12 · 28/11/2008 10:29

well you could actually be a summer instead. many summers have dark hair and often think they are winters.

have you ever looked good in yellow?

going now nut will dig out my book to ask youy the pertinent test questions later

does black drain you?

fishie · 28/11/2008 10:33

mercedes you sound like a jewel winter, my sister is one of them. lots of brights + black as you say. dramatic.

lucky you, will age very well. not like me who will end up old ladyish in lilac and pink.
