Would you honestly notice if someone wore the same dress to a Christmas party and it was about three years apart?

Story is I have a lovely dress. Wore it to dh's work do about three years ago.

I subsequently put on quite a bit of weight and couldn't wear it anymore .

I have now lost the weight and hooray it fits again.

Christmas shindig looms once more and I still love the dress. If anything it fits better than last time. Money is tight etc and it seems crazy to buy something else when I have this. But there is this thing about not wearing the same thing again to the same do isn't there?

I would die if I thought everyone was thinking 'Oh here she comes in her dress again', but would anyone actually notice I wonder? I don't think I would but I'm not terribly observant about these things in other people tbh. Help!

Not sure I would notice. I might if it was a dress I really liked!

Grammaticus · 16/11/2008 11:25

no, I definitely wouldn't.

But if I did I wouldn't think ill of the wearer!

hecate · 16/11/2008 11:26

I wouldn't notice if you wore the same dress two days running, let alone 3 years apart.

cheesesarnie · 16/11/2008 11:26

depends if it was sooooo beutiful that everyone one said wow or so horrible that everyone said eurgh.if neither then no one will notice.

i would anyway.i have 1 dressi love and wear it lots

spicemonster · 16/11/2008 11:28

It is a fact that no one really notices what anyone else is wearing because they're too busy worrying that people will notice that they're wearing the same outfit from last year

MadamAnt · 16/11/2008 11:28

I'm far too egocentric to notice what other people are wearing

SheikYerbouti · 16/11/2008 11:28

wear it.

I am wearing the dress I bought to last year's MN Christmas party at this year's MN Christmas party.

I am also wearing said dress to work do for the second year running.

This is partly because I am poor and partly because I am too fat for nice clothes, so I don't buy owt.

bigTillyMint · 16/11/2008 11:28

Wear it!
No-one will notice and you will feel fantastic in it and so look fantastic.

Anyway, it is the credit crunch, isn't it!

MadamAnt · 16/11/2008 11:29

And FWIW I'm going to be wearing my wedding dress to DH's Christmas office party.

MrsTittleMouse · 16/11/2008 11:29

Wear it! There are so few occasions when you can wear lovely dressing up dresses and that one is obviously lovely. I wouldn't notice, but even it I did notice I wouldn't care. I have worn the same (lovely) dress to three weddings and two work Christmas parties over the years because it just works so well on my body.

Earlybird · 16/11/2008 11:30

Am intrigued as to why exactly you would 'die' if anyone noticed/commented that you were in the same dress?

If it fits/looks good, and doesn't look 'dated', absolutely wear it again and enjoy yourself. If you're worried about it being recognised, maybe accessorise differently to give it a fresh 'look'?

SheikYerbouti · 16/11/2008 11:32

times is 'ard anyway. I bet you won't be the only one in the shall-I-wear-the-same-thing-as-last-time-and-risk-all-and-sundry-thinking-I-have-only-one-outfit predicament.

psychomum5 · 16/11/2008 11:34

I wouldn't notice......I would be far too busy worrying if anyone was noticing that I was wearing the same as last year

avaTsar · 16/11/2008 11:35

It's so trivial to even worry about it isn't it? Especially now.

I will wear it and look fab. I honestly haven't seen anything I like more anyway! Thanks everyone.

i doubt i'd notice if someone stood nextto me in the same outfit.

i can't remember what i wore yesterda let alone what someone else wore 3 years ago.

avaTsar · 16/11/2008 11:38

Glad to see that your memories are as bad as mine.

ChasingSquirrels · 16/11/2008 11:39

no, i wouldn't notice - and if I did I wouldn't care.

AuraofDora · 16/11/2008 11:40

if anyone says anything retort with 'its you you weirdo, its you that is stalking me, innit?' & start jabbing your mobile phone manically and looking around wide eyed for strangers to intervene...

no one really cares or notices and if they do its an indication of leading an uberly sad and ultimately unenviable life so feel mightly superior,
accessories are your secret weapon (thats the short answer..)

enjoy your do

TheGreatScootini · 16/11/2008 11:45

Wear it.But wear different (and statement?) accessories..will make frock look totally different anyway Instant update.

CatMandu · 16/11/2008 11:46

Well, I agree with everyone unless it's a particularly striking colour or has a very noticable detail/pattern.

ForeverOptimistic · 16/11/2008 11:50

I would only notice if they looked so fantastic that it stayed in my memory. If I saw the same person wearing it again I would think good on them if they looked so great the first time round I am not surprised they are choosing to wear it again!

needmorecoffee · 16/11/2008 11:51

I wouldn't notice if you wore it every day so 3 years is probably a good bet. And why would it matter? You like it, its pretty, wear it.

avaTsar · 16/11/2008 11:52

Well it is red so quite noticable I suppose. But I'm going to wear it again and not stress about it. If anyone says anything I'll deny everything .

If someone notices/comments, you could go completely over the top and say 'how kind of you to notice. I didn't realise my dress made such an impression on you when I wore it last. It's one of my favourites, and there's not much occasion to wear these special sorts of party frocks, so I thought why not? Especially after having the baby, it is so nice to have my figure back...' Etc, etc.

Maybe make them feel sad cases for having noticed/commented? One thing though - you won't be able to tell at the party if people are looking/remembering you in the 'same' dress, or if they're admiring you and thinking you look bl**dy fantastic!

Earlybird · 16/11/2008 12:07

Just re-read the OP and see weight gain wasn't due to baby. But sentiment still the same - well done for getting your figure back and being able to look great in lovely clothes!
