does anyone polish their toddlers shoes?

One of my friends said she polishes her little girls shoes. I was rather .

Am I a total slattern for never polishing my litle boys shoes?! If they are caked in mud I clean them, but they have never seen polish.

I don't...

...but I am a complete slattern, and have a DS, so maybe it's a mother of girls thing?

needmorecoffee · 14/11/2008 14:17

nope. Don't iron either.

meglet · 14/11/2008 14:17

oh crap, I just had a girl. Maybe I will be polishing her shoes in 18 months time .

then again, maybe not

I polish ds's school shoes every Sunday. (Lidl's own brand - fantastic).

I am a bit anal about childrens shoes though. I never had coloured shoes or boots for dd always navy, so I could polish them, can't bare children's shoes that are scuffed at the toes and you cannot find colour matched polish.

eandh · 14/11/2008 14:17

I do but both the dd's have patent shoes so I just squirt a bit of polish on them and then shine them up (but as a child my Mum used to make me and my brother clean our school shoes every night, normally after tea, so its just a habit that ingrained into me)

TheProvincialLady · 14/11/2008 14:18

I have a 2 year old DS and I polish his shoes sometimes. It helps to keep them waterproof and in the same way that I wouldn't send him out in public in a worn out old jumper with food stains on it, I prefer that his shoes are reasonably smart.

Couldn't care less about other toddlers though and have never noticed the state of anyone's shoes!

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 14/11/2008 14:20

I thought about it recently because dd's new shoes were already scuffed to pieces - but they are pink - so no.

TheProvincialLady · 14/11/2008 14:20

Fimbo I am sending my mum to buy shoes for DS this weekend, under strict instructions that she must buy the matching polish at the same time (I am paying BTW so not totally ungrateful)

Dottoressa · 14/11/2008 14:21

DH does, but I would never dream of polishing any shoes, ever.

nancy75 · 14/11/2008 14:21

yes i polish dds shoes

PrettyCandles · 14/11/2008 14:21

I clean their shoes, and wax or spray them to waterproof them. They rarely get badly scuffed before they're outgrown, so always look decent, without needing to be polished. It's also a matter of style: if you get Mary Janes with smooth glossy leather, then they tend to show scuffs more than mocassin styles.

Fimbo · 14/11/2008 14:22

LOL!

Surprisingly my dh is quite anal about it too.

Every 6 weeks! I really wouldn't bother if I was buying new ones that often!

Bramshott · 14/11/2008 14:31

I never did (I don't iron either), and I used to polish DD1's school shoes once per half term, BUT this term I've done experiment and polished them every week, and I have to say they are in sooooo much better condition that I think I'm converted!

used2bthin · 14/11/2008 14:33

OMG I read this as "Does anyone polish their toddlers toes! Was imagining pedicured toddlers and thinking wow and they sit still? Lol am relieved! I put protector stuff on DD's boots the other day which is what I'd do with new ones for me but I don't polish them other than that. Haven't found that any of her shoes have needed it tbh except her sandals which were a nightmare and looked dreadful within minutes of wearing them (they were pale pink) the velcro went on them before she grew out of them too grr.

competitive scruffiness, not sure how many people do this on purpose,...but i could win that without even trying...i looked groomed for no more than five mins...even when i have really really tried.

i polish dds blue t bar shoes and they look lovely...for about five mins

littlestrawberry · 14/11/2008 14:36

I rarely did it until they went to school. Their school shoes look so scruffy if they aren't polished, I aim for about once a fortnight, more if required.

DS last had a pair of shoes 6 months ago, never mind 6 weeks ago. His feet appear to have stopped growing.

ohdearwhatamess · 14/11/2008 16:55

I shall add toddler shoe polishing to the long list of things that it never crossed my mind to do or to worry about.

Countingthegreyhairs · 14/11/2008 16:55

I do (nearly every evening - groan) dd has navy blue shoes and leather boots - they look really scuffed and tatty otherwise

Bought her suede/calfskin ones last winter that I thought would be impractical - but now I know better. All they needed was a bit of brushing down ...
