Any other credit crunch brunettes out there? I've gone back to my roots and it feels great!

I finally admitted I can't afford to keep getting my blonde highlights done at the salon and bought a chestnut brown colouring kit.
DH did it for me and it was a bit of a giggle and i'm pleased with the results.

Anyone else?

Me too DB.
Although I'm not quite sure what my natural colour is as i've been blonde for about 20yrs! . I opted for 'light brown' which came out a bit pink (eeek) but seems to have settled into a cosey sludge colour .

Are you having noticeably less fun?

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 12:54

not noticeably.
i had no fun as a blonde so figure things can only get better.

i feel a bit gothy as it came out quite dark. my skin looks much less pale though.

I think I look a little bit younger, though this may be wishful thinking .

SilentTerror · 06/11/2008 13:06

Me too, although have brunette lowlights at salon, but not as regularly, and I touched up my roots with one of those 'root touch up' kits with fab results, have put salon visit off a few weeks

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 13:23

instead of £70 every two months, this one cost £6 , and it's so close to my natural colour i will have no roots at all.

Dh was very supportive of this as i only told him last night how much it costs for my highlights.

I am credit crunch grey
Does not feel nearly so great...

missblythe · 06/11/2008 13:43

I was a salon brunette before, am a Superdrug one now.

Is much less aggrevation than sitting in the salon too.

annh · 06/11/2008 13:44

Oh no, I'm another one going back to my roots! Although I am naturally a sort of dull brown and colour was varying shades of brown, copper and sometimes some blonde highlights. Like you, got fed up of paying som much especially as i gave up work 6 months ago so have started using Boots kits, end result is probably not quite as good but it's a saving of about £60 so I reckon I can lice with it!

redrobin · 06/11/2008 13:49

v interesting as i have been mulling it over for a few weeks...my roots are so bad at the moment, but maybe i should take the plunge. ahve been blonde for years though...

did anyone see that naked beauty programme with Gok, all teh girls had to go back to their natural colours and most of them looked great....except that blonde one! she just looked far less attractive with mousey hair - and i fer that would happen to me. although have to confess i don't think anything would help my attractiveness or lack of it at the mo...15 weeks pg, feeling totally blobby and frumpy.
maybe i should go for a chnage though

redrobin · 06/11/2008 13:51

has anyone tried those home highlights kits i wonder?

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 13:53

i've just realised my natural colour suits my skin colour much better.
seems obvious now.

arf at credit crunch grey.
DH has been made redundant and i fear i may get my first grey any time now. i've made a preemptive strike with my chestnut brown.

OP posts:
Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 13:54

i reckon i could do a highlights kit on somebody else, i watch the professionals do it for years, but i didn't think i'd manage to my own and couldn't find anyone confident enough.

i reckon if you can find a pal who is confident enough you could make a deal to do each others.

Yes, me too. Got a semi-perm (at hairdressers) and it has turned out a bit of a red/purple/chocolate type colour for my liking, I prefer ash brown for my skin tone.

I want to pluck up the courage to try doing it myself at home, so maybe people can recommend the brands they are using?

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 13:56

i used loreal recital preference or something like that.

KatieDD · 06/11/2008 20:30

Ha ha yes i've done that, am a bit sad and it feels a bit dull.
But my hair is shiny and other people seem to like it so maybe it'll be neater and grow quicker when I don't have to get the dry bleached bits cut out every 6 weeks.

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 22:47

any others?

I will go without food, before I will embrace "credit crunch 80% grey"

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 06/11/2008 22:58

Yep, credit crunch brunette here too . I have been having blonde highlights for 10 years now and finally gave in to going back to my roots in April. I do go to a salon though but have been a bit strapped for cash recently and wondering if perhaps I should try DIY hair colour kit. Trouble with the salon is that I have a permanent but my hair was so white blonde before that the brunette goes light really quickly. Within about 4 weeks I am back to almost a dark ginger highlighted look. It's okay but I actually prefer it much darker now. Anyone else had the same problem?

KatieDD · 06/11/2008 23:12

My mums is a hairdresser and said that blonde to brunette needs very careful dying otherwise it can go khaki, I'm sticking with the salon until all the blonde has grown out if I can.

Dragonbutter · 06/11/2008 23:15

I ran my kit past a friend who used to be a hair stylist. It all depends on what colour of blonde you are apparently.

I can't go back to my roots, they are grey!
I can recommend Excell 10 though, does for me so far

Kaloo007 · 07/11/2008 09:10

lol - I have found you

I stopped going to the salon for highlights about a year ago and have been home colouring to brunette ever since.

My hair starts off very dark and scary but gradually lightens back to it's old colour over a couple of months, but each time the roots get longer and longer.

Then disaster struck! I brought a slightly different shade of colour and went khaki
.... and had to scuttle back to the salon for colour rectification.

Now I'm back with less than before, but definite highlights, and I'm sorry to say ladies ... but I feel so much better for it. Its a false economy

Lauriefairycake · 07/11/2008 09:15

I have been blonde highlights for ten years. Went a bit daft a couple of months ago and dyed it red and it was patchy. Stuck on a dark brown colour (like Charlotte from Sex and the City) and though its definitely a bit dark for me I've got used to it. I am pretty grey though so will have to keep this up.

I have shoulder length hair (though its very thin) so I discovered that the patchy problem was only using one packet of dye - next time I will use 2.

chocolateteapot · 07/11/2008 09:15

Not brunette but faded red head with just a few blonde highlights to cover the white hairs currently growing at an alarming rate.

Am seriously considering resorting to a packet of henna though am worried my white hairs might go some weird colour and need to check out that they won't before I try it.
