Any other credit crunch brunettes out there? I've gone back to my roots and it feels great!

I finally admitted I can't afford to keep getting my blonde highlights done at the salon and bought a chestnut brown colouring kit.
DH did it for me and it was a bit of a giggle and i'm pleased with the results.

Anyone else?

Nobody has mentioned going to a hairdressing college to have colours done cheaply - any experiences?

I haven't tried recently, but years ago I used to get my hair cut by students (when a student myself) and it was always perfectly done as they are so closely supervised.

Doozie · 07/11/2008 13:08

I've just had the cheapest haircut in 15 years. What a difference in cost it is not having any colouring. I will save a bomb! I'm letting my ashy blonde roots come through. So far they don't look too much like a tide mark.

However I'm missing the colouring as it gives my fine, flat hair a bit of oomph!

However my eye brows are so fair, it doesn't look like I have any. They are so much lighter than the hair on top of my head. I will be continuing to dye those. Does any body dye their own eye brows?

However as soon as I spot a grey, back to the overpriced colourist I go!

I used to go to a college for cut and colour when I had plenty of time for it. It was great and v cheap. Most colleges who do hair/beauty have salons now.

I've been colouring my own hair (am naturally mouse with a lot of grey) for years. I like Garnier Belle Colour as you don't need to just do the roots as it grows out, you just do it all.

If you only have a few greys or just want a bit of oomph then a semi permanent is great

piratecat · 07/11/2008 13:25

i have very grey roots, lots of them, ok they r white!!

I used a permanent dye for about 3 yrs, and it realyy wrecked my hair. I have found that the normal semi permanent Casting range does a really good job, and gets rid of the grey too!!

Much better for your hair, becuase even if you try and do your roots with a permanent it's tricky not to get it everywhere.

i started getting grey hairs at age 16.

Beware - I had a cut done at the Vidal Sassoon training salon in London - it was a great cut technically but REALLY didn't suit me. He'd just done a standard VS cut from a book and ignored my face shape.

I am also painfully growing out blonde and have 3 inches of my natural colour which I'm finding quite depressing actually. I feel so scruffy and ..dirty?! because my roots look vilely greasy as they're much darker.

I've been wacking on 'Colour effects' from Superdrug; a small bottle of temporary hair colour that somewhat disguises the discrepancy in my hair colour. i just use it every wash like shampoo, a bottle last 8 washes on my jaw length hair.

PuppyMonkey · 07/11/2008 13:31

Nah, my natural colour is now grey and all home colouring kits last precisely three days before the grey starts springing through again.

My only choice is to disguise with blonde highlights, which has done the trick now for about eight years. Go to the hairdresser every eight weeks.

And I don't give a fig if it does cost me a fortune. Credit Crunch my arse.

clutteredup · 07/11/2008 13:59

I get my hair coloured every 6 weeks at home, but I'm feeling the pinch too but don't know what to do about doing it at home - as I am completely clueless. My roots are very grey so I panic and have them done again -
how do you couler your own roots, or do you go for a semi permanent one all over ?

Springflower · 07/11/2008 14:31

I'm another one who's natural colour is now grey but I pretend its dark brown! My roots need done every 2 - 2 1/2 weeks so I get it done at the hairdressers every 5 weeks and do my parting and hairline (T-bar) myself inbetween to save money and save time going there. The hairdresser recently gave me the code of the products they use so that I can buy it and do it at home with the right colour . I soooo wish I didnt have grey hair but any amount of cash is worth it to me to cover them up.

elastamum · 07/11/2008 15:44

I have found a really cheap salon that does mostly old ladies and will do me for a fraction of my old salon. It looks just as good and the conversation is a lot better there

zazen · 07/11/2008 16:50

You must go to my local salon elastamum.
There is a very good stylist there, and a good cut is worth it's weight. It should last months also.

Lowfat · 07/11/2008 17:37

I am credit crunchy - literally, my ends are all dry and split. And I am sure it is a false economy as what I am paying in deep conditioners will actually fund a quick trim in about 6 weeks!

yep, I'm one too, or in the process of becoming one, after years of meticulously topped up blonde highlights. Now sporting quite unpleasant roots and a bank balance that does not stretch to 8-weekly salon visits... superdrug here I come. Credit crunch brunette - I love that!

HauntedHouseMate · 07/11/2008 19:20

Another credit crunch brunette here. Am actually going to a salon on Monday to go back to brown (too much bleach on it to trust a home colour I think) then, if needed will use a home kit.

I cant remember the name of the one I use - but its a whole head colour and highlight kit in one. I've been blonde, gingery and dark brown with it, and liked the result every time.

Doire44 · 08/11/2008 14:53

I'm a credit crunch frizz bomb. having three little ones means that I don't have the time or money for 6 weekly visits so I stopped relaxing my hair. It's quite liberating but I'm now spending money on products to get the ultimate curl otherwise I look like a 70s throwback. oh and my mum thinks I'm growing dreadlocks!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 08/11/2008 21:25

I got a loreal one with highlight kit included for 2.99 from b&m bargains

i cut the front of my hair and added a fringe and dh did the back

i told people toni and guy did it and they said it was really lovely

Tallulah1978 · 10/11/2008 20:24

I have been colouring my mousy hair various shades of deep red and plum for years. I refuse to pay ridiculous prices they charge and have always been happy with the home kits and am now expert after years of practice. So I always do my colour the night before and go to my local salon the day after for the cut - £30, which I also hate paying - so I am currently looking for somewhere a bit cheaper - the salons like my mum used to me to where the old dears go - surely its just the same? Have just had hair cut and ended up cutting my fring when I got home anyway, whats the point in paying all that money. I can buy my son 3 months worth of vests and sleepsuits, 3 weeks worth of nappies or a whole lot of fruit and veg for that!
