Before I spend £120

I need all the usual... warm, waterproof, hood, length, etc. But I am 5ft 4 and size 18/20. Will I look like a sack of spuds in this?

I have the same one as Percent has! I look like a sack of shit in it. Blue/lilac shit, but still shit. I have never worn it because it looked so awful and am thinking of returning it as they say you can return things at any time. It is hideous. I am same size as you, but 5'8". Mad old lady was what my DH said as well, and he called me Grandma when I tried it on.

If you find something else let me know!

expatinscotland · 21/10/2008 23:18

i see your point, ceolas. we spend a lot of time outside here, this is the second year of unusually wet weather here AND, especially with the gales, this place is usually much colder than most of England.

fashion is fab, but function is essential.

that's why i went for the extreme squall jacket instead.

an attached hood is a must here.

but this jacket you can still get in colours that go well with most clothes.

frogs · 21/10/2008 23:19

I have the black one. It is okay to look at -- not beautiful, but okay.

HRHSaintMamazon · 21/10/2008 23:19

sorry but its a no from me. looks like something you'd find in the old lady section of BHS

handlemecarefully · 21/10/2008 23:20

It's shapeless and vile. Just because you are size 18/20 doesn't mean you must avoid fitted coats...I think fitted coats (pinched in at the waist etc) always look better, irrespective of whether you are skinny or fuller figured...

expatinscotland · 21/10/2008 23:24

fashionable fitted coats.

and walks to and from school in Western Scotland.

nope, don't see it.

for jumping on a train en route to your office job in Glasgow, perhaps.

but for actual, real time in winter in Scotland?

i'd go for warm and functional any day.

handlemecarefully · 21/10/2008 23:32

You can get fitted coats which are country - proof. I'm a country lass (with dogs to walk in all weathers in the New Forest) myself you know!

handlemecarefully · 21/10/2008 23:33

Mind you we are probably about 5 degrees warmer here in the deep Sarf than you Oop North

moshie · 22/10/2008 14:50

how about www.cottontraders.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=7051this for a bargain. haven't seen it, but surely ideal if you do a lot of walking in the rain and aren't bothered about being fashionable (or not)

moshie · 22/10/2008 14:50

bugger, i'll try again in a mo

expatinscotland · 22/10/2008 14:51

it is dire weather here today.

i can't wait to get my Squall Extreme jacket.

moshie · 22/10/2008 14:52

this

Ceolas · 22/10/2008 15:37

I wonder if I should just go for the regular squall?

OP posts:
Ceolas · 22/10/2008 15:42

In red it's only £49.50.

hettie · 22/10/2008 15:55

well I know they are v expensive but check out barbour- they don't just do waxed cotton coats but other material and all are waterproof. Most seem to have some cinching and or belt action.....

samsonara · 22/10/2008 19:08

That looks comfy and like it would do its job but it does lack a bit in basic styling, it looks too baggy and long even on the model, talking of barbour , I'm keen on
this one, just not keen on the price.

addle · 23/10/2008 19:03

there's a version of the stadium squall coat in different colours in the sale at landsendat £83 if that would suit? hth

KatieDD · 23/10/2008 20:25

My Gran had that coat in 1992 before she died. It's absolutely awful.

Ceolas · 24/10/2008 15:01

JackieNo did you get L or XL?
