skirt/hair length vs age

i'm curious; do people think there's an absolute cut off point beyond which having long hair or wearing short skirts becomes automatically muttonish?

is there a grey area depending on style (e.g. stilettos & leopard skin vs wooly tights and chunky boots) or perceived age (e.g. the "shock" factor of seeing someone's face after seeing them from behind).

if not hair/skirt length what have you decided that you are "too old" for style-wise? sadly or with relief?

Sadly too old for belts under the boobs, a la moment, wide elastic belts, skinny jeans leggings....and perhaps bubble skirts

I wore all these in the 80's and would love to waer them all again...especially leggings

when i was a teenage waitress a very very old lady used to come in for coffee - she had looooooong beautiful white hair that was gorgeous. i told her how much i liked it and she said she had had long hair her whole life

I saw a lady the other day, great figure, long thick blonde hair, shortish skirt and I thought wow, she looks fab! then I passed her and realised she was mid-50s and I'm afraid my kneejerk response was then eeeeeew! (only in my head, I hasten to add).

Sad, isn't it? I'm 38 and dress pretty similarly to ten years ago - but then, I was never a fashionista and I feel I know what suits my shape and colouring. Never have worn short skirts and the like so don't intent to massively alter my style as I age.

I don't think there should be absolute cut off points. But last year I had my very long hair cut into a short bob and I haven't regretted it for a moment - it is soooooo much better.

Agree with Malory that short skirts and bare legs are not good on anybody, unless on holiday - my biggest pet hate is short skirts, bare legs and knee high boots - gross!

hair below shoulder blades is a young persons (below 40) look I'd say

short skirts are fine if worn with thick tights and good legs,not too short though unless your v young

knee length isn't short is it??

panicking as that's the only length that suits me

really my mum is 73 and wears just below knee,she still has great legs

Wear nothing that is above knee length,but have hair just below shoulder length.

i have short skirts and shoulder length hair

short skirts must be worn with flat shoes or boots and thick tights tho unless you want to look like you are touting for business

too old for denim shorts over opaque tights

I've never had the legs for short skirts but am now 32 and have decided that longer hair looked awful on me. Have gone for a bob - looks much better!
I can also no longer wear:
combats
low cut tops (stretch marks on norks )
tops that don't cover my bum
trainers!

i think so much depends on personal style that there aren't any definite cutoffs. i'm thinking of one 40ish mum i know who easily carries off tiny skirts (over leggings) and even bunches because she has a quirky punky thing going on and the confidence to go with it.

ggirl - naw knee length doesn't count as short, you're safe

fizzbuzz - leggings are eminently sensible mumwear if you ask me, i know plenty of late 30s+ who wear them.

lolol zippi on the shorts - i secretly like them actually. would have had the legs for it 10/15 years ago but not the confidence. definitely too old now though.

too old for trainers? at 32?? what do you wear now then zip-up slippers?

My hairs almost at my waist. I'm 32. Don't intend to cut it anytime soon. But I look alot younger than I am.

i dont wear trainers but thats because i dont like them, whats the age related issue with them?

i remember when i was 21 and working in a restaurant one summer I thought the 28 year old were a bit old to have long hair! Changed my mind when I got to 28 myself!

Trainers on me sort of look like they would on a 75 year old. I don't look that old I hasten to add but tend to look my best when wearing ballet pumps / boots etc!

isn't that odd cos there's not much i feel too old for (hair to elbows, skirt a few inches above knee) but ballet pumps is one of them. i think because i grew up wearing trainers there'll never come a point where i feel i have to give them up, but ballet pumps only came in the last couple of years and seem a bit too "fashiony" for me.

I had almost waist length hair and recently cut it off, it just felt like it was time to change. I don't feel like such a WAG now.

Personally I love long grey hair on a woman over 60, I think it looks cool.

Not a fan of very long hair, but don't see the problem with older women keeping long hair if it's well cut, in good condition and it suits them. Actually, I think a short haircut can be quite aging - it's almost like announcing to the world "hey, I'm middle-aged now".

As for skirts, echo what others have said about bare legs. And even with good legs, I think short skirts can look a bit tarty on women of a certain age. But it all depends, to a ceratin extent, on what else a person is wearing - is the outfit as a whole "sassy" or slutty?
