I can't afford Dermalogica anymore. What's a good cheaper alternative?

For acne-prone skin, even though I'm 34

I'll eventually need scrub, mask, moisturiser, the works really. Meanwhile I will eke out every last drop of my beloved Dermalogica products (they really made my skin fabulous for the first time ever).

Thank you!

i liek the super rich thing night cream in a cool dispenser

TheBossofMe · 15/10/2009 22:04

I mix expensive Dermalogica night cream and Eve Lom cleanser with cheaper daycream, toner etc from Oli of Olay Total Effects (bought in bulk when on two-for-one or 30% off at supermarket)

nouveaupauvre · 15/10/2009 22:08

i have the same problem - i love dermalogica and never found anything else as good but its so expensive, tried oil cleansing method and it was ok for three or four weeks but aftr that all went downhill.
my only suggestion is to reduce cost a bit by alternating: three weeks of dermalogica, followed by 1 or 2 weeks of something else cheap and inoffensive (like, i dunno, Simple or something) then back to the dermaologica. it takes a few weeks for your skin to react to a change of skincare regime so you should get away with it with any luck - by the time your skin starts going downhill, you're back on the dermalogica.
or so i'm hping, this being the first week of non-dermalogica.....will let you know how the experiment goes!

Hi,am in the same boat as you, have got to downgrade from elemis to something cheaper,my friend (beauty therapist) has said that some of the things from avon are quite good.

What I'm going to do is buy cheaper scrubs, facial wash and toner but still pay a bit more for moisturiser and weekly mask treatment.(still not elemis though £70/£95 for moisturiser is just no longer an option)

kittya · 16/10/2009 00:50

I love the Elemis moisturiser but I had to downgrade to Dermalogica!! Out of everything though its moisturiser that should be paid for, in my opinion, just like paying for a good foundation. Dermalogica do a great vitamin mask that I often sleep in as my skin gets that dry! I think any toner or cleanser will do. I hear that Superdrugs own brand is very good. As for the exfoliant from Dermalogica it is great but I would not recommend using it more than once a week as it is very abrasive!

Not sure about any of those, the best one I now use is www.thefacebeauty.co.uk - thefacebeauty, great price and free courier delivery because I spent over £40 - let me know what you think ?

TigerseyeMum · 20/11/2010 20:37

I switched from Dermalogica to REN to Dr Organic and I am doing OK, my skin reacts badly but if you compare the ingredients Dr Organic has all the high-quality oils (eg argan oil, rose otto etc) to REN, and no allergens.

I have tried it for a week and it's doing well so far.

pointsmakeprizes · 21/11/2010 00:49

I have switched from dermologica - was using their their ultracalming cleanser, microfoliant, skin smoothing and the spf booster, the eye cream, etc to La Roche Posay - half the price and just as good - you can get it from boots. Most of the products are paraben free and they are brilliant for sensitive skin. If you want a cheaper alternative I can't rate them high enough and I was a dermalogica die hard for the last 7 years and got all my friends hooked onto it too. I would not switch back to dermalogica even if they dropped their prices.

NinkyNonker · 21/11/2010 21:33

I'm afraid I was stick with Dermalogica too, I love it. Only thing to sort out my sensitised, excema prone skin.

CaveMum · 21/11/2010 21:55

I had a chat with someone on this website who works with science bods who test beauty products.

She said that RoC foaming facial wash is rated very highly as is the Jason Naturals Instant Facial. I have been using both (very oily, spot prone skin even though I'm 29!) and they are helping.

Before I got married (2 years ago) I was having 2 facials a month using Colin products and they did really improve my skin but they are VERY expensive and I couldn't justify the cost.

Since coming off the pill 6 months ago my skin has gone haywire (my boss even asked me if I had been to the Dr about it Sad) but it is slowly calming down.

celticlassie · 21/11/2010 22:17

I like Neutrogena - a friend told me that her dermatologist recommended it to her and I feel it keeps my skin quite clear.

phillipa123 · 24/11/2010 19:06

Would not switch from Dermalogica now, I was recommended by a friend 5 years ago and now I just love it, the skin smoothing cream from thefacebeauty is my favorite. I also use the Dermalogica Age Smart range, it's the best for my skin that I have found.

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 19:20

Any chance you can get to the bottom of your Acne. And this is from a Dermalogica enthusiast (what really sucks is my husband uses mine on the sly!!!)

Is it hormones? Can you go on the pill? Particularly Dianette? Or are you already?

Is it diet? Tried cutting down on alcohol and sugars?

Failing that, any chance you can use a different cleanser and makeup remover and evne exfoliant, but "finish" with your normal Dermalogica moisturiser? I love it and rate it highly but I do think its what you finish with and put on your skin that makes the difference in the long run.

Liz Earle is not cheaper by the way (or is it?!?) - if so I think you are buying your Dermalogica from the wrong place, which is worth looking at. Try Jersey Beauty Company.

Ps: If your skin is hormonal, balancing hormones with diet is all about blood sugar control.

lemonmuffin · 24/11/2010 20:07

That's interesting tatty, about balancing hormones with diet and blood sugar control. Do you mean that if you reduce your sugar intake it will regulate your hormones better and improve your skin?

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 20:32

In my experience yes, and I believe there is evidence based research that supports this too. (Will link if I have time)

Patrick Holford writes a lot on this subject.

The thing is, you have nothing to lose in terms of health, because your weight and energy levels will always improve with the correct energy balance (low GI basically) but sometimes it helps to have an added incentive.

People on the Atkins Diet, Cambridge Diet, Lighterlife diet often report amazing skin. Its not to say you have to go to these extremes but these are all diets that will balance blood sugar.

If you are a carb fiend, love a regular drink or have a sweet tooth and just know you can't control that side of you, the pill is a good way of "artificially" regulating those hormones.

I had never had as good skin as when I was on the pill - until I went on a GI controlled diet (slow carbs, no refined sugar, little alcohol)

Age also helps - are you young? In which case Envy

knomedeplum · 24/11/2010 21:23

I have skin like bumperlicious - what dermalogica products would you recommend? I'm always totally baffled by the amount and type of products available. I'm a soap and any old moisturiser girl at the moment

21sarah21 your 1st and only post is to bump an old thread, in order to recommend a salon? Hmmm.....

Emo76 · 04/07/2011 07:48

Hi. I swapped the dermalogica cleansing gel for a "simple" one - with same results.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 04/07/2011 08:09

I use Dermalogica products - but I swap with Olay regenerist moisturiser sometimes. In summer I use the dermalogica tinted moisturiser, eye cream and daily microfoliant - although I dont use the micro every day.

I had a facial last week and my skin was amazing after, still is.

OP go and get yourself a good dermalogica 'prescription' facial with face mapping and your therapist will give you some samples of what she used and also a list of what she recommends for your skin type.

Conflugenglugen · 04/07/2011 08:17

I feel your pain. I've had to give up my Dermalogica staples (Skin Smoothing Cream, Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, AgeSmart Moisturiser) at various times becuase of cost - and I can find nothing that really does the same thing for me. So I've now resorted to giving the most important ones priority when I have some money in; and I also buy the large, professional containers from a reputable seller. My Cleansing Gel is only half empty and I've had it for three months, and the Skin Smoothing Cream lasts for two months.

Really, I'm hooked!

kwaker5 · 08/07/2011 20:00

Where do you get the professional sizes from? I used to get them on eBay years ago but I think they put a stop to it

charlotte711 · 08/07/2011 20:09

have you tried www.beautyflash.co.uk

QuinnFabray · 08/07/2011 20:10

Cetaphil is really very good. Recommended by dermatologists. My skin has never looked better, and I have used Dermalogica in the past.
