What coat does your primary aged dd wear to school?

Dd needs one and I can;t decide whether to do smart wool which is what she usually has or a more waterproof option. Or do I allow her to have an awful puffy things which I have so far managed to avoid. She is 7

There are so many of those awful puffer jackets, personally, I can't bear them. I bought DD (6) a coat from Debenhams, its longish which I wanted, predominantly beige with fur trim on the hood, its thick and splashproof.
I would, given the choice, buy a traditional wool coat as I think they look lovely but they aren't waterproof at all.

A smart wool coat is nice, but not v practical for our lifestyle. DD2 is 8 and I let her have an awful puffy thing this year, but it is waterproof (although white ). We go for waterproof always because we walk to school and if a wool coat gets wet it stays wet all day. Also my children need coats which can go in the washing machine.

Depends on your school and its uniform policy, methinks. My dd started with a smart, navy blue, waterproof coat (think thick mac) from M&S. But school is very free and easy about coats and she soon wheedled me into allowing her to wear her 'home' coat (similar but lilac).

I suspect a good wool coat would be ruined if it had to hang all day on a peg, especially if it was damp. We've just started walking to school so will be looking for something long and waterproof (the puffy ones all seem to be hip-length at best).

Dd said that everyone in her class has a waterproof one which made me think that maybe I should stop the smart wool coat thing. She does have a waterproof light coat but that would not do for winter. She has a heavier winter jacket that is waterproof but that is for horseriding and walking the dog and not really smart enough for school.

I saw a lovely wool one in Zara.

I want it to be red, black or grey so as to match her uniform.

Dd school is moving to the other side of the town so she will have a longer walk, about 15 mins so perhaps waterproof would be better. She just looks so smart in her lovely wool coats, I can't see a smart waterproof one anywhere.

The inform policy says nothing about coats.

I saw an acceptable puffy one in Next I think, but I think it was the wrong colour.

I was loving the Zara coats too, Twinset, but couldn't justify buying them because they wouldn't do for everyday wear.
Their coats are from H&M and are warm and practical but not smart.

DD had an awful puffy thing last year. I bought two, one in a size bigger so she has one for this year too.
I made sure I stitched the name tag in securly as half the school had the same coat.
I found it practical and it matched with her uniform well.
DD liked it, she was the same as a lot of her friends and warm.

It passed my coat test, although a wool coat may have too, but with all the money in the world, I wouldn't bother to find out!

Where did you get your puffy one from. It is the ones with fur around the hood that I don;t like as the fur gets all horrible or shiny and puffy.

Are wool coats not waterproof?
I've never bought/owned one so excuse my ignorance but I assumed they were as it's a school coat for a child we're talking about!

Sorry T&P but why not just get an Asda coat and save the wool one for best, on a dry day?

I don;t think we have an asda here, I also have a thing about Asda which is pure snobbery but I hold me hands up and admit it.

I was thinking that if she has to walk to school in the rain even if she stays dry the coat will be heavy by the time she gets there and will not dry out.

I got DD's from Asda. Either pink or black, £5, that's why I bought two.
They are warm, they have a hood and as I said, half of DD's school had them.
Not fancy but practical and does the job.

A duffle coat will get wet & smell like a wet duffle coat but will still be ok to wear. Probably best to get one of those padded waterproof coats you can wash & dry easily.

Despite all the name tags, bits of coloured cotton etc dd regularly manages to bring home someone elses, bag, shoes, jumper, skirt etc so having the same jacket as half the school is probably not a good idea

dd wears or will wear funky duffle from boden when it gets a bit colder

has been wearing a 3-in -1 waterproof/fleecy from Decathalon which is great. v cozy and a good cut

when it rains we have fleecy lined rainjacket

Right have found

marks and spencer but I can see that fur going all horrible

marks again but the fur is their again

this would look lovely on her but I don;t like such a bright colour for school

I love her in a duffle coat, she had a cute monsoon one and I saw a lovely Boden one but she does not want to wear a duffle coat.

Yes, that's why I bought the puffy black Asda one for two years.
The Tresspass ones are for out of school but I can't help be a wee bit envious? no weirded out?. no not that either.
I don't know the word I am looking for but wool coats to look good which are clearly so impractical I just don't get at all.

I find doing my best before DD leaves home when she looks so neat, and welcoming her back in looking like she's tap danced through a hedge is fine.
Her coat is warm, practical, matching and, oh yes, that's enough, that's what I require from a school coat.

Really, why do you need wool, not Asda and has to match?
