What coat does your primary aged dd wear to school?

Dd needs one and I can;t decide whether to do smart wool which is what she usually has or a more waterproof option. Or do I allow her to have an awful puffy things which I have so far managed to avoid. She is 7

I don;t need wool, she looks nice and smart in them that is all but have accepted that maybe she needs something more practical but still want her to look nice.

dd likes the marks one.

poncho. In wild rainbow colours.

twinsetandpearls · 04/10/2008 09:22

DD actually has a wild coloured poncho but not for school

dd can't wear a coat so once she's in her chair we put poncho on top of her and a cosy toes thingy for her legs. It clashes with her hair and the emerald green uniform.
If they don't like it they can spend a hundred pounds on a special wheelchair one

hippipotami · 04/10/2008 09:46

I have never even considered buying a coat to match her uniform
And I would prefer a bright colour so that when we walk to school on a foggy dark winter's morning she is more visible than she would be in a black coat. And I cannot afford to buy a separate coat for home and school.

Dd is obviously a tad neglected in the coat department.
She has a pink Peter Storm handmedown raincoat for the not so chilli days and a blue handmedown ski jacket for the cold days.

Our school do a coat (fleece lined rainjacket} as part of the uniform but it is optional. We do have one (she has ds's old one) but does not like wearing it as she does not want to look the same as all her classmates.

twinsetandpearls · 04/10/2008 09:51

I am quite anal about things like that, in her previous school her coat had to match and I thought it was a good idea. It also stopped people having show off stupid coats with logos all over them.

She tends to have coats for different things, so a coat for church/smart, coat for horseriding and walking and needs a school coat.

DD has handmedowns and things from charity shops, we have been looking on ebay for a coat.

I can see why it would be nice twinset, and am now beginning to imagine dd in a nice long smart schoolcoat...[pushes image away]
She does have a jacket for dog walking which does not come to school.

Dd did have a long coat (similar to teh M&S ones linked to earlier) last year (another handmedown )but found the length stopped her from running and climbing trees. So hence she was delighted when the ski-jacket was handed to her by my friend

twinsetandpearls · 04/10/2008 09:57

That is a good point about the length actually. We are going to Poole or Bournemouth later so will get dd to try a few on.

dd has a raincoat with thick lining. Covered in pink stripes and patterns. It's vile really but she chose it and she loves it. She has pink duffle too for when it gets really cold.

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 10:03

DS has two

One for cold days - a padded, puffa style jumper, lined (so very warm) and waterproof, with hood.

One for milder days - a very lightly lined raincoat, also with hood.

Neither are very long as he doesn't like being restricted in his movement sin the playground.

hippipotami · 04/10/2008 10:03

See, I would loooooove a duffle coat for dd.

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 10:10

jacket, not jumper!

Both came from Zara and were £12 each and wash really well.

chatee · 04/10/2008 10:26

my dd has the first m+s one that you linked to twinset(and had the same one two years ago) and it washes fine and the fur doesn't go that manky if you follow the washing instructions(brush the fur when it comes out of the washing machineseriously)
she also says it's a nice coat as it keeps her bottom warm and she doesn't get a wet skirt like some of her friends

lumpsdumps · 04/10/2008 10:54

Mine wears a Tog 24 waterproof one, though she hates me for making her wear it.

NorbertDentressangle · 04/10/2008 11:04

DD has this one from La Redoute but in indigo -slightly padded and puffy but is more waterproof than last years one (cotton canvas padded parka style one also from La Redoute) which is a bonus as we walk to school.

Bloody typical that its now reduced when I paid full price a few weeks ago.

TheSoapEatersMum · 04/10/2008 18:33

My DD has this one

I love it- I can always spot her at home time! (handy when I haven't got my glasses on!)

JiminyCricket · 04/10/2008 18:58

search me I have bought about five and dd still doesn't wear any of them..school have asked for waterproof and she has a lightweight foldaway one that she prefers (think this is only because its lighter/smaller to carry as she never bothers wearing it anyway. She has always shunned jumpers and coats. I bought a nice one from M&S which is big and puffy with mittens and a warm hood (she is only five)

twinsetandpearls · 05/10/2008 00:36

I like that Redoute one. That is the duffle I like for out of school wear Soapeatersmum but dd said no way.

i agree wool is lovely and smart

but totally impractical for us.

if it gets wet before school its not dry by lunchtime

if she gets warm in the playground she throws it on the ground, so it needs to be washable

it also needs to be warm for winter

so its an awful puffy thing for us too

samsonara · 05/10/2008 13:04

Last week I bought for dd
this
and
this
they were on sale but have been reduced even more now!
