I always think it is better to be over dressed than under dressed IMHO

Black trousers and a nice shirt always look smart without being ott?

overthemill · 24/09/2008 21:54

I think a suit is a good fall back but what about good trousers with a shirt (tucked in) a belt over the trousers with a really nice cardigan. The belt if wide enough or sort of dipped in the middle iyswim hides a multitude of sins! All of these have to be good stuff - try next or principles or debenhams. sort of smart casual but showing you have made an effort. Heels if poss or at least something smart.

llareggub · 24/09/2008 21:55

I find accessories can really transform a dull, boring suit. I rarely wear suits to work now (public sector) but would for an interview.

Pay attention to your bag, shoes and coat.

spudmasher · 24/09/2008 21:58

I would go for a really lovely necklace- something really eyecatching- to set you apart from all the navy/ brown/ black dressed people. Or a darkish suit with bright or patterned blouse. And heels. Definitely gives a feeling of confidence imo.

Dragonbutter · 24/09/2008 22:00

thanks for replying.
monsoon seems to have some nice trousers and tops at the moment.
what's a good alternative to monsoon.
i want to feel totally confident in what i'm wearing.

don't worry, i'm also studying like a feind

A suit is very safe. You can pick one up fairly cheaply in M&S, and other high street stores.

feeble · 24/09/2008 22:15

When I was working I swore by Next suits - they fit and flattered well!
If you have an outlet mall near you I got a lot of them there

Dragonbutter · 25/09/2008 08:06

I find suits very masculine though.
I'll try some on.
Sounds like i need to make some time to go shopping (without children).
Thanks.

I go to Next for that sort of thing fairly cheap last well and most of there stuff you can put in the washing machine

I dress like cod specifies for work and I have found it easier to buy tailored clothes from there an their sizes are generous

agree with cod, that's the kind of look i'm chanelling for you - good trews with a BELT though - makes you look much more 'put together' and organised/efficient. a better bet. I'm public sector too

Kew is good but I find their trews too big so try alternative sizes.

Have just bought 3 pairs of M&S trews and they are all a good fit - i have a tummy too! Try the autograph range - £39.50 generally. Crisp shirt - from Jigsaw maybe?

Big necklace - M&S or Monsoon or where ever you have - Exeter/Plymouth must have lovely shops for something more individual

M&S have good heels at the moment or try Hobbs if you think you will want them again

fishie · 25/09/2008 08:49

clarks have got nice shoes now too. you will need a good bag.

Dragonbutter · 25/09/2008 08:56

eek, quite exciting.
thankfully got my hair done recently.
i'll let you know how i get on.
thanks
