haha, I remember in my canadian youth, you could buy JUST THE POLO BIT to wear under a (lumberjack 70s style) shirt....

imagine, a polo neck, without the actual top.

orangina · 17/09/2008 14:58

Oh yes, the ubiquitous white polo neck.

I once lent an American friend of mine a cool and trendy jumper (at least it was at the time). She put a white polo neck underneath it. It was soooo not the look (punky style slash neck thingy) and it put me off that jumper for ages afterwards.

Mercy · 17/09/2008 15:15

And tanned legs and pristine white 'sneakers'

onepieceoflollipop · 17/09/2008 15:17

It's not just for adults either. My dd has been sent loads of polo neck vests (English vests I mean as when the Americans say vests they mean something else, can't remember what!) Anyway, you can get baby vests complete with poppers and polo neck.

Also those "funnel" necks are very popular - my auntie used to send me those. Trouble is unless you are tall, slim and have tiny boobs, they look awful on most people.

Lubyloo · 17/09/2008 15:18

Not polo neck - the Americans all wear turtle necks

onepieceoflollipop · 17/09/2008 15:19

turtle/funnel/polo necks - they are all unflattering for most of us.

JackieNo · 17/09/2008 15:20

Lands End always have a particularly good selection of turtle necks.

saltire · 17/09/2008 15:20

Used to see lots of them in St Andrews, american women wearing tartan trousers, white shoes and polo necks under another jumper. Not a golf club in sight with most of them

flowerybeanbag · 17/09/2008 15:21

I used to wear polo necks a lot when I was a teenager. Black ones, with short tartan skirts, thick black tights and DMs.

JackieNo · 17/09/2008 15:21

Mmmm - nice

Brangelina · 17/09/2008 15:22

Black ones are OK, as are most dark colours. It's the white ones that get me. And every American girl I've ever met has at least one in her wardrobe. Along with a frilly blouse for those important occasions.

orangina · 17/09/2008 15:23

here!

(phew, couldn't let it defeat me)

JackieNo · 17/09/2008 15:23

When I was a teenager, I used to wear a cream coloured silky knit polo neck under a burgundy dress. Very unflattering, I suspect.

FabioVicePeeperPlopper · 17/09/2008 15:24

they must Never Be Worn by the large of nork

But yes, very American.

flowerybeanbag · 17/09/2008 15:25

I have to say when I was wearing black ones trendily with my DMs, DH was wearing white ones under coloured shirts a lot...

lilQuidditchKel · 17/09/2008 15:28

it gets really cold there, in many places. unlike here in the UK (London anyway) where summer, winter, spring and summer are indistinguishable. You never need 'polo' necks here! (sidenote: quite a few Americans never call them that, they are called turtlenecks).

Not the height of fashion, but if it's farking freezing outside, sometimes you just don't care.

HeadFairy · 17/09/2008 15:33

If you've got a cold neck, get a scarf and wear a thermal vest that no one can see. This from someone who spends many an hour standing outside in all weathers. I've never felt the urge to put a white polo neck under my shirt!

Used to wear black one under school shirt to hide lovebites when I was a teenage slut[shock}

MaryMungo · 17/09/2008 15:34
