I bought a little bra for 8 year-old dd

And she loves it! She begged me to buy it and she has worn it non-stop for 2 days! She even wanted to sleep in it!

Of course she is nowhere near being able to fill it, but it is just a little trainy type one from Gap.

At first I thought it was really sweet, but now it makes me feel a bit sad. She is going to need a real one soon enough...and then she will have to wear the damn thing for the rest of her life!

thats not a bra!

thats a crop top!

MarmadukeScarlet · 02/09/2008 19:23

Erm, why does an 8 yr old need to cover herself when changing?

My Dd wears vest in winter, but only for warmth.

IllegallyBrunette · 02/09/2008 19:24

I would call that a crop top really, not a bra.

Am I the only person that always found crop tops realy uncomfortable ?

msdemeanor · 02/09/2008 19:25

what a lot of nonsense all this is. She's playing dress up in what is no more than an abbreviated vest, for heaven's sake. My three year old carries an old lipstick in her 'handbag' and slathers it all over her face to 'be a fairy'. She doesn't look terribly 'sexualised' I have to say.

IllegallyBrunette · 02/09/2008 19:25

When do you get them a bra ?? Dd1 is nearly 11 and has little bumps but not proper boobs. She won't wear vests anymore, so what should I get her ? Bra, crop top ??

I simply cannot remember what I did. Pretty sure I went from flat chested to DD cup overnight.

LackaDAISYcal · 02/09/2008 19:26

agree it's a crop top not a bra.....but your OP does say bra, which I imagined to be well....a bra.

misdee · 02/09/2008 19:26

crop top IB if she wants one. dd1 is 8 but has small buds already.

i also went from flat chest to DD overnight it seemed.

joliejolie · 02/09/2008 19:27

Because she feels more comforatble covering up when changing for PE...don't all 8 year old girls?

This was an innocent thread and now I feel seriously freaked out and a bit worried. Plenty of little girls wear make-up and I would never allow that.

This was blown out of proportion and it seems like sometimes people are just itching for a fight.

crop top is ok if she's self-conscious, though being self-conscious at 8 is so sad

you did say bra, that's not a bra

Twiglett · 02/09/2008 19:28

no, I don't think 8 year old girls do feel self-conscious in the main .. I think that's far too early to have body sensibility

IllegallyBrunette · 02/09/2008 19:31

I think a crop top is fine if she really wants one.

I am dreading all this bras and boobs stuff, can never keep track of my own undies, nevermind 2 more lots.

misdee · 02/09/2008 19:31

i think they do, sadly twig.

dd1 has been aksing if she can shave her legs as she has been teased at school about her dark leg hairs.

also, some of the girls have been wearing crop tops since reception (too young IMO), and they teased her about her vests, hence her now having crop tops.

pagwatch · 02/09/2008 19:31

joliejolie
I think if you had put crop top rather than bra in your OP you would have had a very different response.

Although I didn't post I have to say that buying an eight year old a bra - a proper bra - struck me as a bit off too. And I am not in the least spoiling for a fight.

I think most people's reaction to I bought my 8 year old a crop top would be ..

joliejolie · 02/09/2008 19:33

Sorry, it is called a bra on the package and I did say it was the trainer style....which it is.
Little girls do get embarrased in front of little boys. My little girl does not like her own brother to see her naked.
I guess by MN standards I am raising a self-conscious, sexualised freak.

Very nice!!

But they call it a bra and that is really annoying. I am fed up of retailers only selling things that encourage the young girls to act / be older than they are. It is irresponsible retailing if you ask me.

You know if they called it a crop top or a short vest, I would feel a lot better.

Also, training bra? FFS, training for what???????

Kbear · 02/09/2008 19:35

Girls feel self conscious changing in front of a class of boys - oh yes they do. Crop tops are fine at that age I think, better than a vest which is too warm in summer and better than nothing which is embarrassing when you are 8, 9, 10 and developing a bit.

Why are bras sexual?

I see them as a mummy thing, not a sex thing

Admittedly something with a slit and tassles is different

training for bigger boobs!!!

Clary · 02/09/2008 19:36

I started a thread about this the other day and was made to feel I was wrong to think this is a bit odd.

A friend of DD's has one, according to other pals "to put her boobies in"

DD is 7 and doesn't feel self conscious. I just asked her and she is fine abotu it

Why would she be bothered yet? She wears a vest in winter to be warm, so is this crop top to hide her boobs?

Doodle2U · 02/09/2008 19:36

I thought you meant this kind of thing too

Kbear · 02/09/2008 19:37

No jolie, some people just like freaking out about something that is perfectly harmless. It's actually more harmful to make your DD strip off in a roomful of kids if she is embarrassed about showing the top half of her body.

joliejolie · 02/09/2008 19:39

I originally just wanted to know if anyone else had bought similar. Thanks to those who said they had.

primark do nice plain white top and knicker sets with a pink trim and green trim. They aren't remotely bra-like, more a crop vest
