Stylish ladies, help me! I have no style!

None!

I'm 5"8, normally a 10-12 but currently nearly 12 stone. Feel ugly, unstylish and frumpy.

My style pre-children would have been skinny top, push-up bra, big flares and heels, 3/4 length fitted jacket. I am now more muffin top than skinny top, and I can't get my flares over my mahoosive thighs and my fitted jacket no longer fits over my breastfeeding bust

And I've totally given up on my unruly hair. I think I'm beyond help on that score.

I'm off to the shops tomorrow in a quest for a brand new casual wardrobe. I have no clue. Please be brutal. Please be honest. What would you do to me?

Hi Heated

I love the look on the model. But the top is identical style to the blue one on my profile pic which makes me look wide?

I'm dedicating tonight to finding at least 2 flattering day to day tops PLUS knitwear of some description. Love the tank top look with shirt under, but I suspect not good whilst I have post baby tyres

My mum bought this cardie at New Look yesterday - should I go for the same style? (apart from obvious no-no of looking like my mum)

I'm also seriously tempted by the Fly shoes someone suggestedthese ones in dark brown.

Wore my teal outfit & scarf today and felt like a million dollars.. only trouble is what to wear for tomorrow..

Plum Monsoon skirt - gorgeous! But £65?? Good grief. Love the teal colour of second skirt, but squirly patterns are a bit too daring for me (one step at a time, Eviz)

That green whitestuff top is handwash only.. I have a toddler and a newborn - so it would probably spend alot of time in the bottom of the laundry basket

Loving the suggestions though! I am in such new territory it is really quite exhausting

What about this?

Is blue good?

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 02/09/2008 22:15

Nice top from Top Shop.
Agree the Monsoon skirt is gorgeuos but £££< I usually buy Monsoon in the sales, no use for you now of course.
I thought the blue/purple frill bottom top you linked to before looked really nice, didnt think it made you look wide as another poster said, I just thought it might work better with bottom half other than jeans.
How about the Gt Plains tops I lined to earlier or the one fron White Co, they all looked flattering and glam (and
easy to wash)IMO.

eviz · 02/09/2008 22:45

Pannacotta, I feel v. guilty for monopolising you as my personal style consultant!

I've got a pair of (pre-preg) wide leg trousers up in the loft I'm going to get out (to try with that blue ruffly top). They're a sort of fawn/taupe colour and quite funky.. I remember they were quite big so I'm hoping they'll get them on.

Went to buy the Pelia top this eve (I loved the purple 3/4 length sleeve one) but tbh what put me off was the gathering over the boob - I tried a similar style in Zara yesterday and it made me look enormous as no definition under the boobs - a kind of vertical drop - and I lost my shape.

In 2 minds about the poppy top from Great Plains - love the colour but ££. I am trying to heed the advice re changing post-preg size made earlier in this thread too.. And I am seriously considering the White Co top.

We are going away next weekend which is making me rush my decisions a bit - I have practically nothing left in my wardrobe and if I'm not careful I'm going to get very carried away! So think I might put the skirt idea on hold (new skirt = new boots = ££££) and limit myself to tops and 1 cardie for now.

Your advice is fab, btw! xx

Heated · 02/09/2008 22:47

This maybe? Don't know how it scores practically but goes really well with the trousers I linked earlier.

Best piece of advice I took from another thread is, if you like the outfit, buy all of it, including the accessories, as it's probably the whole look that drew your eye in the first place, rather than a single item.

Good luck with the Gokking.

regularlyoverwhelmed · 03/09/2008 09:43

this is the kind of shape cardi I think you need (not This actual one - with the strange built in scarf and not so nice sleeves) - boxy, one button, drapey - the one your mum bought is too curcey aroundy, think will only emphasis any muffiny bit syou might have going on

would agree you should steer clear of tank top thingies for now, they can be fairly unforgiving imo

WideWebWitch · 03/09/2008 09:45

Gosh, I think you look lovely.

regularlyoverwhelmed · 03/09/2008 09:50

ps LOVE that second monsson skirt heated linked to - may just have to pop over to monsoon at lunchtime

I know is £££ but I find with monsoon if I buy something I love there I will wear it for years (I say sitting at desk in lovely monsoon embroidered linen skirt that was bought at least six years ago and still makes me smile when I wears it)
if you buy well there in your personal style it doesn't necessarily date either

I love that poppy top, and think would work even after you lose more weight (not that you need to but your probably will I guess) because of the shape - would look great with teh white stuff denim skirt, or jeans, or flowy trousers...

That blue top shop top is nice but quite summery for going into autumn - you'd need to think about how you'd layer it

Heated · 03/09/2008 10:45

Agree regularlyoverwhelmed, I have a similar monsoon turquoise skirt with a brown border that I wear year on year & I often get asked where I got it. Skirts ime are very forgiving when moving back into non pg clothes, & always go for the smaller size if shrinking as you can always wear an A line higher on the waist.

bethoo · 03/09/2008 10:51

not the white top as gives you no shape.
have you tried wearing waist belts to define your waist?

CountessDracula · 03/09/2008 10:58

Can I offer a suggestion?

Your jeans look a bit baggy round the thighs to me. I assume this is because you are a bit apple shaped and you have to get a larger size for your waist

Get thee to River Island (yes, really) - they do great jeans which are tighter round the thighs but generous in the waist (well hip I spose)

CountessDracula · 03/09/2008 10:59

(that was to OP btw)

regularlyoverwhelmed · 05/09/2008 19:09

well, did you buy anything else yet?

eviz · 05/09/2008 20:39

Helloo! I bought the Topshop top in blue..

I bought a purple cardie in TK Maxx (3/4 length sleeves, ties under the bust), a blue Great Plains top (the same one a previous poster linked to) and a couple of gorgeous french connection tops..

Really in a quandry about whether to get these or not Fly Ludo

Do you want more photos?

OP posts:
Alambil · 05/09/2008 20:44
  • no, no more pics

You're gorgeous and I'm green.... I hate you

tiggerlovestobounce · 05/09/2008 20:49

I'm new to this thread, but you look lovely just as you are.

regularlyoverwhelmed · 05/09/2008 21:04

yes, deffo get the fly ludo (I am going to - they are fab) and more photos please

well done - sounds like you had fun

eviz · 05/09/2008 21:07

I've taken the photos off except for the frumpy ones.

Does that mean I can't ask MN for style advice on my outfits on a daily basis?

OP posts:
eviz · 05/09/2008 21:09

Did you get that plum Monsoon skirt btw? I saw it in the flesh today and it is very, very beautiful.

Completely inappropriate for Tesco though

OP posts:
Jewelsandgems · 05/09/2008 21:17

Wow Eviz just caught up with the thread and you have been doing some serious shopping!!

Re the jeans, they are nice but for one, Ithink you could have done with longer length and 2, if you did go up a size because you still have a tummy, maybe worth returning them (even if just for credit note) and then when you have lost more weight you can go in again and buy some that are a better fit. The colour is great though!

More pictures please!
