Stylish ladies, help me! I have no style!

None!

I'm 5"8, normally a 10-12 but currently nearly 12 stone. Feel ugly, unstylish and frumpy.

My style pre-children would have been skinny top, push-up bra, big flares and heels, 3/4 length fitted jacket. I am now more muffin top than skinny top, and I can't get my flares over my mahoosive thighs and my fitted jacket no longer fits over my breastfeeding bust

And I've totally given up on my unruly hair. I think I'm beyond help on that score.

I'm off to the shops tomorrow in a quest for a brand new casual wardrobe. I have no clue. Please be brutal. Please be honest. What would you do to me?

This is such an eye-opener - THANK YOU

Just to check - I'm not sure what an empire line top looks like - is it fitted under the boob then goes drapey straight down?

I like tops which are long enough to go down to my bum, as I have a big problem with gap-age and big stylee muffin top when crawling on the floor and doing other toddler-type things.. all my stuff is too bloody short.

spicemonster maybe we were seperated at birth! Thanks for tip re cheapo Frizz-Ease. Should take out a second mortgage with the amount I spend on hair products.

Jewelsandgems that White Company top is beautiful.

MN is amazing..

You've got fab curves for a woman with a 2m old baby!

I think these jeans would look good on you. They're similar to the ones you've got on, but a bit more flared from the knee & choose the darker ones down the sides to give a lean silhouette.

Also think you could pull off the whole white stuff/kew/joe browns A line skirt with birkies as well as the wide-legged trouser and long-line coat too.

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:05

kama I can't fit into what I was wearing before I had children Jeans won't go much past my knees and my tops ride half way up my tummy

And DP makes me smile.. otherwise I look miserable as fuck and have random people stop me in the street to tell me to cheer up

Goks fashion fix

I did this. i have a similar figure to you (2years post baby), only smaller boobs. You look great.

Anyway, the style consultation gave me a boost and loads of ideas for shapes and fits of clothing. Recommend it highly!

Pannacotta · 30/08/2008 21:07

This is empire line
www.greatplains.co.uk/product/womens+Casual+Tops/J6A8W/Coppelia+Top.htm
but you might find tops which kick out above the bust more useful for now while you are feeding lots! (easier access!)
eg www.greatplains.co.uk/product/womens+Casual+Tops/J6A8H/Dan+Top.htm

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:09

Heated those jeans look good but I feel I need more flare. Am I too old for flare? I used to live in a pair of Miss Sixty Supertommies (£14 from TK MAXX) but they're threadbare now and haven't found anything similar since.

What are birkies?

Off to google Kew & Joe Browns now!

You look great!
If I were you, I would get a decent haircut (sorry this sounds harsh, your hair is fine but everyone looks so much better with a good cut )
And you are not too old for flares, I have a fab pair from TopShop, think they are called Bette, and I am 33!

xx

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:15

Is this Kew, Heated?

Love the empire style Pannacotta I have a few tops similar, but they are all tight under the bust rather than floaty, which is bad for access and too revealing for my saggy tum

OP posts:
Jewelsandgems · 30/08/2008 21:18

oasis also do nice jeans - lots of different styles, and lots of darker shades.

These look quite flary...
oasis jeans

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:18

Vodkamartini what style haircut d'ya think? It's so thick, the shorter it is the more it sticks out. Layers add to the 'hedge backwards' look, and thinning makes it look straggly.

Current plan is to try to get it all one length and grow it to below the shoulder.

Or get a wig.

Pannacotta · 30/08/2008 21:21

eviz some of the G Plains tops are empire line but flare above the bust this would be better for access and flattering the tummy, eg the Dan and Pelia tops on this link, also the suare neck top
www.greatplains.co.uk/category/womens+Casual+Tops/Casual+Tops.htm.
The Gap Curvy jeans I mentioned before are quite flared:
www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=12099

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:21

Jewelsandgems - love those jeans! Look high in the waist too (low rise is my enemy)

I am getting v. v. excited now. There is hope!

vodkamartini · 30/08/2008 21:25

I am no hairdresser...my own hair is a hedge ....

My first reaction on looking at your pic was that you needed a more defined cut, something shorter and sharper....but appreciate what you say regarding it being thick. I guess this is when the good hair stylists earn their money.

Have you a good stylist you trust? Or recommendations from friends with lovely barnets???

eviz · 30/08/2008 21:28

Pannacotta I like the style of the wide leg curvy jeans. There's a Gap at the Metrocentre (where I'm off to tomorrow or Monday) so will seek them out - along with the Oasis jeans.

I love the Pelia top. But what about the colour - someone advised I should ditch pink

I always thought blue suited me, but happy to be advised otherwise!

OP posts:
eviz · 30/08/2008 21:32

Vodka have given up on going to pricey salons and asking for their 'top stylist'. Last time I had my hair cut by a hairdresser friend of a friend, cost me a tenner and looked exactly the same as a cut that costs me £50.

Looks lovely when straightened, but who has time to do that every morning?

I wear it back when I'm in the house, but was scared off wearing it tied back in public after a friend referred to me as 'Miss Scrapey-Back Hair' and said I looked scary

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 30/08/2008 21:32

The Pelia top is plum/purple rather than pink (the top you are wearing in your pic is quite pastel pink).
Think it would look good on you, though it is quite hard to tell from a photo alone. Plum is often more flattering/easy to wear than pink though, IMO.

maidamess · 30/08/2008 21:34

I can't believe you are nearly 12 stone.

I'm 5 ft 9 and am 11 1/2 stone and I look huge compared to you. Get some new scales would be my first piece of advice.

But figure wise, I think you look great.

You've got a great shape to dress, just funk up your tops a bit and accessorise.

Jewelsandgems · 30/08/2008 21:37

Glad you like my recommendations Eviz and hope you find lots of good stuff tomorrow.

Although not good at all for boob accessability, the poppy top on that greatplains link would look lovely on you I think but it is a little bit more fitted. [And a print should also disguise any wobbly bits you are aware of]

Also, necklaces with those empire line tops will look very nice, or vintagey dangly earrings.

[BTW you do look excellent in my opinion considering you have a 2month old baby and you are really pretty]

cheesesarnie · 30/08/2008 21:37

i think you are very pretty and have a nice figure.are you sure you have baby?

zippitippitoes · 30/08/2008 21:37

i cant ofer any advice but yopu look lovely

jeans too rumply

not sure why you would be too old for flares at all

so that is rubbish

i think you could wear practically anything

if you wanted to dso something then buy some clothes you like maybe v necks are good and i dont see to much wrong with your haqir but a cut is always nice

you would look fab in a gpoing out dress maybe start there with some new stuff and get your p to dress up too

fishie · 30/08/2008 21:46

you may be better in more yellowy colours and certainly not that pink. get colours done, it is a revelation. but an £80 one.

beware hair serum. it often has silicon in, which is very drying.

you have nice hair. just put it up sometimes to show neck. not fiddle about with straighteners.

onceinalifetime · 30/08/2008 21:47

No, no don't cut your hair! I think we have the same sort of hair and it's taken me 40 years to get something that works! I've had every other style you can imagine - problem, for me anyway, is that shorter styles always look great at the hairdresser but are really hard for me to maintain at home.

I've finally grown it longer - for me I needed to get the layers at the back a bit longer so that they don't bump up into a ripple effect. My hair is now shoulder length in longer layers. After washing, I comb through a mixture of half serum half leave-in conditioner (Bumble and Bumble is brilliant - can buy at hqhair.com but it's £££) and scrape it back into a ponytail. Leave it to dry naturally for an hour or so and then take out ponytail. I know this sounds strange but the ponytail bit first has the effect of straightening the area around the face so you don't look like a poodle and then the rest goes into quite big soft curls. The serum sorts out the frizz and the conditioner stops it from zooming out into a Crystal Tips and Alistair 3ft wide triangle. No hairdrier and no straigteners! It's really low maintenance, I've had loads of compliments and dh says it's the best hairstyle he's ever seen me with - that's in 15 years. Sorry if I sound a bit evangelical and bonkers but my hair has driven me mad for so long!

By the way, you look amazing for someone with a two month old baby; or even someone without a baby!

pgwithnumber3 · 30/08/2008 21:49

I think you need accessories. Some nice flared jeans with a simple top but a fab scarf and killer boots would look fab on you. You have a great figure!
