In what professions would you expect to see women wearing makeup and not wearing any?

The makeup thing got me thinking. If any of us turned up to work without makeup our boss would mention it, especially when on site and facing clients.

aGalChangedHerName · 02/08/2008 16:41

I am a CM and rarely wear make up. Parents always notice when i do. They always are surprised and remark on the fact.

Mercy · 02/08/2008 16:43

Dr Northerner, does your boss apply the same rule to your male colleagues too?

DrNortherner · 02/08/2008 16:43

I work in Event Management. We are expected to be creative and exciting

Out of 38 staff there are only 3 men. 2 are accountants and 1 is MD so no makeup rule for them!

My boss told me I looked dowdy cause I wore a cardi!

i dont think thast makes me think someone is exciting imaginative or creative

DrNortherner · 02/08/2008 16:46

Neither do I really, but make up has to be worn when facing clients.

I don't have a boss- I work for myself and wear make up all day every day.

zippitippitoes · 02/08/2008 16:47

it wouldnt be enforceable tho as itg is discriminastory practice

Mercy · 02/08/2008 16:49

Blimey.

Don't air hostesses have to wear make-up too?

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 02/08/2008 16:50

I would only expect it on make up counters in department stores! Maybe I am too working class lol!

I am a window dresser so no need for me to wear it as nobody will see me really.

DrNortherner · 02/08/2008 16:50

i went for a job interview yesterday and neither the female director who interviewed me or her pa were wearing make up

zippitippitoes · 02/08/2008 16:51

thats a good point if you have to wear amke up your boss should pay for it

girlnextdoor · 02/08/2008 16:51

All cabin crew have to wear make up ( even the guys??) and they have to wear RED lipstick- had a frined who worked for an airline- not Virgin, or BS, and they all have to.

DrNortherner · 02/08/2008 16:52

Ah, but can you be certain? Maybe they went for teh natural look?

I used to work in the marketing department of a management consultancy and it was made subtly clear to me that good grooming probably included discreet makeup. It wasn't a problem for me as I usually wear it.

OracleInaCoracle · 02/08/2008 17:00

my db is cabin crew for FC and the women all have to wear make up. he doesnt though.

i never used to wear make up for work (restaurant manager) and in fact sent a waitress home once for wearing too much make up and perfume. too much can look unprofessional imho

shhhh · 02/08/2008 19:20

I guess makeup wearing women is expected at make up counters..I would not buy if the sales girls looked like they hadn't made the effort iykwim...

Non wearers..Hmm....nurses..? Don't know why..maybe because I have a friend who is a nurse and she refusses to wear it to work...BUT I wouldn't have a problem if a nurse did wear it...feck, if I was a nurse I would wear it !!

OracleInaCoracle · 02/08/2008 19:22

there are also hygiene issues. makeup melts and flakes. in jobs where hygiene is vital thereare restrictions iirc

thelittlestbadger · 02/08/2008 19:23

Depends really. I'm a solicitor and in my last firm people didn't wear make up in the office at all, but as soon as there was a meeting slap was trowled on all over the place.

beanieb · 02/08/2008 19:25

why do they insist on you wearing make-up? Is it because they think make-up is prettier?

Why do women wear make-up and Perfume? Because they are ugly and they smell
