In what professions would you expect to see women wearing makeup and not wearing any?

The makeup thing got me thinking. If any of us turned up to work without makeup our boss would mention it, especially when on site and facing clients.

I used to work on the YSL counter in a dept store, I looked like shit most of the time with no make up on at all.

zippitippitoes · 02/08/2008 19:28

Community psychiatric nurses dont seem to wear make up ( the ones that ive tagged along with dont anyway)

unknownrebelbang · 02/08/2008 19:34

SIL is a CPN and she rarely wears makeup at all, but one that visits my workplace is always wears it.

We tends to dress down in our job and none of us wear much.

I know that prison officers aren't supposed to wear it (or at least I know of one prison where they're not supposed to).

Blondilocks · 03/08/2008 19:27

I get comments for wearing makeup at work. Wear a horrible uniform so this is one of the few ways to actually show your own sense of style. I sometimes wear glittery eyeliner & brightish colours, because I look so washed out & boring normally & we don't see customers.

My boss doesn't wear any makeup. Not sure she owns anything which isn't black.

Hulababy · 03/08/2008 19:47

I wear only a small amount of make up for work. I work in a male prison, seeing my clients eery day wehn there.

My manager would be more likely to comment if I wore a lot of make up than none at all.

I'm a teacher and I pile on the slap; I admit that most female teachers are most appallingly turned out. I want to shake some of them sometimes.

Trafficcone · 03/08/2008 19:52

I'd be prepared to sue any employer who expected me to put that shite on my face.

expatinscotland · 03/08/2008 19:52

i worked as a legal secretary or paralegal for years and we were expected to look smart.

fridays were 'business casual' days and sometimes we had a charity drive 'wear jeans to work' day.

but i'd not have considered going to work without makeup, hair styled and groomed, groomed nails, fake tan on legs if wearing skirt or dress, perfume, the lot.

had a standing appointment every 6 weeks with hairdresser (wasn't grey then), two gym memberships (one climbing gym and the normal gym in the basement) and to a yoga ashram down the street where the first class started at 5AM (it ended at 6.30AM) so you had time to get showered and ready for the office by 8.

I work on a women's glossy.

Two of my most glamorous colleagues - who wear towering heels and have fabulous skin - don't wear makeup.

ivykaty44 · 03/08/2008 19:58

If someone at work commented about my makeup and whether I was wearing it or not or how it was applied I would be It is personel and sod all to do with anyone else.I would tell them politly were to bog off

I like wearing bright orange lippy and bright blue eye shadow

Fennel · 03/08/2008 21:22

Feminist academia. Make up not required. It's not compulsory to look as though you're just back off the communal coach from a weekend at Aldermaston peace camp but it's certainly acceptable.

Pannacotta · 03/08/2008 22:15

I don't have any expectations about women wearing make up in particular jobs, or not wearing it for that matter, IMO it is (or should be) a personal choice.
Sorry to sound rude DrNortherner but I think your boss sounds like an arse.

Quattrocento · 03/08/2008 22:19

I have expectations that people who work in shops (esp at make up counters) will wear make-up. Also at nail bars. Also air hostesses.

This expectation is nothing to do with sexist behaviour on my part - it's just that they invariably do wear what looks to me like an incredible amount of make-up

Pannacotta · 03/08/2008 22:24

Thats true Qattro, those you mention usually do pile it on.
But I wouldnt care either way and cannont see why air hostesses need to wear make up, since they are really air borne waitresses and lots of waitresses dont wear make up.

TeeBee · 06/08/2008 14:07

Fennel, I agree with you. In my line of business (medical communications), it is the secretaries that wear make up and look glam. A lot of the academics don't and it is perfectly acceptable. Some of us do and you do get lots of comments (from women) about how glam you look.

I used to work in a sterile environment in a medical production company and all traces of make-up had to be thoroughly removed before entering. Hideous, we reapplied each time. I would feel a bit pasty without something.
