I meant ribbed as in Gap or Cos ones

deffo not PE

PootyApplewater · 27/07/2008 22:50

I am a clammy mess in this heat.

Only solution: get three hessian bags.

Cut two holes in one, and fashion into shorts.
Cut three holes in second, and fashion into t-shirt.
Place third bag over head.

Environmentally friendly too.

ninedragons · 28/07/2008 06:40

Linen-mix or silk-cotton mix knee-length A-line skirts and t-shirts. Really nice flip-floppy sandals. One piece of big bold jewellery (wood, silver, or as your chic lady knew, something like jade or turquoise) rather than lots of fussy little bits. Big sunglasses and a nice plain sun hat if necessary.

No vests unless you lift weights at least five times a week. Never, ever wear clam diggers or whatever those cropped trousers are called. Busy patterns are a no-no in the heat; they look awful with a flushed face. I have been downloading Coach Trip for junk telly and by God, the English cannot dress for the heat. It is all bingo wings, hoiking of bra straps and picking of wedgies.

ninedragons · 28/07/2008 07:37

Ooh and if it really is insanely sunny and you are going to be outdoors all day, parasols. Everyone uses them in Asia but you never see them elsewhere. People will initially look at you as if you are wearing a monocle or some other fashion anachronism and then think actually, that is a really good idea. I have taken them to Glastonbury.

I have an extremely stylish (if I say so myself) one with a Japanese woodblock print design. It is SPF50 (the Japanese take the staying-out-of-the-sun thing very seriously) and perfect for swanning round with DD.

TwoWashTutter · 28/07/2008 07:40

ugh yes the heat of 2003

i was in hosp sweating profusely as the sun shone directly on me, lying on plastic sheet

yuk

Cies · 28/07/2008 07:48

Looking at Spanish ladies, I'd say their top tips for being stylish in the heat is not to abandon tailoring as soon as the sun comes out.

So, linen suit, linen or cotton dress, skirts and blouses.

Plus, the lovely statementy jewellery.

Makes me grrr, because I just look crumpled and frazzled, whereas they (especially SILs) look effortlessly elegant.

TwoWashTutter · 28/07/2008 07:52

agree with everyone saying avoid manmade fibres and anything clingy

loose and linen good

but loose linen trews plus loose top = sack of spuds

you have to have one half fitted imo

so loose top ok with slim fitting trews

or fitted top with loose trews

ditto for skirts

zookeeper · 28/07/2008 07:55

Don't get the linene thing - it just looks like it needs a good iron to me - wgat am I missing? I have a lovely white linen top that looks great on the hanger but after five minutes on me I look like an unmade bed

ninedragons · 28/07/2008 08:01

Mad dogs, etc etc

I need Puss to come back and give me some Saudi-tested heat + dust dressing tips. We are off to Kashgar to buy a rug.

pooka · 28/07/2008 08:01

03 ridiculous hot.
dd born in july. Remember before she was born going out in car just to cool down with air con. While wearing sarong and loose t shirt. Must have looked a sight and a half.

ninedragons · 28/07/2008 08:03

Linen-mix is generally more crease-resistant than pure linen. Linen + silk is lovely.

RubySlippers · 28/07/2008 08:06

keep a bottle of that [[http://www.pharmacy2u.co.uk/details.asp?productid=MACU150&affiliateid=81866680101062&affiliateid=8 1866680101062 magicool] stuff in your bag

it is marvellous

RubySlippers · 28/07/2008 08:07

magicool

obvioulsy, you have to take it out of your bag and spray it on

JamInMyWellies · 28/07/2008 08:27

Yuck 21wks preg, massive sweaty face. No matter what I wear linen shorts floaty top still have pizza's and horrid run of sweat down my boobs.

Cant wait till I go on holiday when I can wear bikinis all the time and pop a kaftan over the top when seen in public. You just need to ignore the bowling ball up my top.

MrsBadger · 28/07/2008 08:36

agree with Mal that no-waistband s good

saw people out yesterday in denim shorts

madness

I am in deep envy of all you flipfloppers though - never has the Closed Toes For Work rule been so irritating

(white a-line skirt, little striped shirt, no jewellery at all. And farking ballet pumps )

MrsJohnCusack · 28/07/2008 08:42

yuk 2003 I've now remembered is when I got sunstroke. I thought I had meningitis, it was FOUL

anyway. I don't have the secret, but yes, simplicity. linen good, although i think darker colours better as don't show the inevitable creasing so much

also not having frizzy hair. and skin that means you don't have to trowel on the slap

here it's all thongs/jandals (flip flops to you and I), surf gear, shorts, bleached hair, fake tan (and that's just the boys) on the youths. but there are lots of fabulously elegant 50somethings who seem to have it down to a fine art.

noddyholder · 28/07/2008 08:46

Linen slip style dresses in black white or stone No colours!Flat sandals gold or silver and simple hair with a scarf around it.Big silver hoops

maidamess · 28/07/2008 08:47

ooh yes noddy that sounds good. Would cover up my varicoses too. They dictate what I can and can't wear in the heat. grrrr.

noddyholder · 28/07/2008 08:50

shame i don't practice what i preach a lot of the time

fishie · 28/07/2008 08:54

agree with woven not knitted. have woven linen dress and ye olde birks today. hair up too is very cooling.

EffiePerine · 28/07/2008 08:55

NO sleeveless shirts (why? and why do they look so much worse than vest tops?)

long skirts can work surprisingly well - saw woman in plain black top and fuschia v light floaty long skirt - effortless and v flattering

I was pg in summer of 2006 - not fun. Not much fun at the moment either but at least I'm not too far along or too massive (yet)

am in baggy linen trews, black top and gold shoes atm and will likely be condemned by MN as hideous but at least I'm comfy

SilentTerror · 28/07/2008 10:50

I can imagine Helen Mirren does a good 'older lady' summer look very well!

ranting · 28/07/2008 11:02

COTTON!! It all boils down to cotton, cotton skirt, cotton blouse, works everytime. And you sweat less. Cotton dresses in light colours, also very good.

Mercy · 28/07/2008 11:05

I think the best way to keep cool is to cover up basically, a kind of salwar kameez style.

(says she wearing a t-shirt and shorts)

used2bthin · 28/07/2008 13:17

I was pg in summer 2006 too effie it was awful. And I was running a baby room that flooded so me and the staff and fifteen babies had to be in a small airless room for a few weeks of it while they sorted ours out. I didn't much care what I looked like though at that stage. I used to wear a stretchy skirt thing and vest tops mostly I think. Am in denim shorts today mrsB after admiring people in them yesterday, do you think it looks silly or do you mean just too hot? Everyone at toddlers today was in lovely little sundresses. Which was what I wore yesterday but mine is just a bit too long on me I think and its lined so not cool enough. Did anyone ever find a suitable "school run" dress?
