HI,Im 53,52``.Weigh 9 stone.
Reasonably active, would love to be toned.
I joined a Body Pump class for the first time last saturday.I lasted 45 minutes.
I have been in agony all week.My joints, particularly ankles, ache.Have difficulty moving and have come out in a cold sore. This happened before when I joined a running club 5 years ago and it took me weeks to recover from just the first night.
Can you give me any tips?DH says, take it very slowly.BUT HOW??!!Any advice gratefully received. How do these stars manage to get gorgeous bodies?Like Daniel Craig,I know I am not a bloke but how does get from -10 to off the scale so effectively? Is there any hope for me?

Bump!

I don't think I could ensure bodypump for even a few mins! I do yoga and pilates instead.

kiskidee · 25/07/2008 21:35

The first time i did body pump I knew i was going to be in serious trouble the next day so I took two neurofens before I went to bed and two more as soon as I woke up the next day. It helped but was still in agony so I didn't go back till the following week. Sounds like you would need to take two or three doses the following day to ease the stiffness and pain. Neurofen is good because it is a pain reliever and an anti inflammatory.

AFter two or three weeks, I could start to go twice a week.

It wasn't long afterward that I began to feel and see the benefits of the exercise. It really helped with maintaining a good posture because both tummy and back muscles were stronger.

I have always been very petite. 5ft 4in in a sz 10 but I put on half a stone yet dropped a dress size.

Oh, tightening up all over made me horny as hell and had incredible orgasms because like I said, everything seemed to tighten up. Good luck!

Thanks Jewels,you sound most sophisticated!

My first time at body pump - was sore the next day but not too bad. I was rather smug that day. The second day I woke up and without a word of a lie, i could hardly bring my arm up to brush my hair. So i feel for you. But the good news is that it was NEVER anywhere near that sore ever again, and i tried to go twice a week.

If you are as sore again, i would definetly take it easy, maybe lighter weights until you feel more comfortable?

On the other hand, some forms of exerceise don;t suit everyone (i can't do body pump now as i had an iffy back) but do try it at least one more time to see if things improve. I thought it was brilliant.

cornsilk · 25/07/2008 21:37

I love body pump but it hurts like hell if I don't go for a few weeks! Your joints shouldn't be hurting - your technique may not be correct - speak to the instructor next time.

time4me · 25/07/2008 21:37

Kisk! What a message!So inspiring,thank you!

pollykettlechips · 25/07/2008 21:38

Have an iffy back, not had. And the bad back has no link to the body pump.

cornsilk · 25/07/2008 21:41

when I started I used the smallest weight on each exercise for weeks - I was very, very weedy! It helps to get the technique right before you lift bigger weights so that you're working the muscle correctly. It is the best exercise I have ever done - tones the lot!

time4me · 25/07/2008 21:52

We didn`t use weights, just beserk dancing, manic and then stretching on a mat.
Everyone was pouring with sweat.I thought I would die!

If you didn't do weights are you sure you weren't doing body combat or some such strange thing? I did body pump because i am crap at following anything that resembles a dance routine. Body pump has next to no choreography.

kiskidee · 25/07/2008 21:59

... and it always entailed weights ime.

poshtottie · 25/07/2008 22:02

bodypump is with weights, its just like been in the gym but in a class setting, squats, press ups etc.

poshtottie · 25/07/2008 22:04

sounds like bodyjam

time4me · 25/07/2008 22:31

oops I think it could have been Body Attack, and believe me it felt like it.

get yourself to body combat - soooo much more fun sooooo much better - or body attack - am yet to try that but it seems similar to body combat.

re the aches etc - long swim in the tub, and have a chat to your instructor next lesson, might need to tweek your holds etc.

I love Body Pump. When I started, I couldn't move after the first class but I dragged myself back (after swearing I would never go again!). After a couple of weeks, it became easier and I started to up my weights. I was also losing weight on Slimming World and the combination of that and Body Pump completely changed my shape. I'm 5'6" and a size 8, and about 9.5 stone. It's amazing for toning up. I now do 22kg on the squat track. It takes time to get used to the moves. I go 2-3 times a week and really notice if I miss a class. I would say don't use heavy weights initially, until you are confident with the moves. You will still get an effective work out. It takes about 6 weeks to get used to the class ime. The good thing is the music and moves change every 3 months or so, so you don't get bored!

meglet · 26/07/2008 19:20

It killed me for the first few sessions and needed paracetamol for a couple of days. I remember trying to lift my hands onto the steering wheel to drive home and could barely do it . It does get much better after a few weeks and you should end up lifting some hefy weights after a few months. I love it, probably the best thing I ever did to really get into shape!

time4me · 26/07/2008 19:42

Thanks for the messages.I am hobling around and people ask me what the problem is.I think I will need a while to recover but your comments have inspired me and I will go again. Thanks!

body pump is defo with weights, i do it 3 times a week. Body attack is hell on earth tho!

moulesfrites · 28/07/2008 08:35

I love body pump, but the first time I did it, I got back in the car to drive home and I could barely move my arms and legs - (a problem when driving) I was in agony and every time I had to change gear I groaned with pain. The next day at work (teacher) I lifted my arm to write on the board and grimaced. Kids thought I had lost the plot. Now it's much better. Before I went I had never really enjoyed exercise, just kind of endured it, and I was always puzzled when people talked about the buzz they got from it, but now I completely get it, sometimes I feel euphoric while squatting to 'Livin' on a prayer'! PS has anyone tried BodyStep - it's hardcore!

time4me · 28/07/2008 21:00

It was Body Attack!I bumped into the gorgeous male trainer on the stairs and confronted him about my aching body and he said Oh excellent, well done,it shows it must be working !! Think I will give it another go,thanks moules, your comment has inspired me.

Body Attack is fab - best exercise class I have ever done. In fact am currently 23 weeks pg and still doing it as I can't bear to give it up yet!

Not sure whether the aching is normal though. Probably is if you aren't used to exercise. The instructor should give you low options at all times (i.e. without jumping, running on the spot rather than round the room, half-jacks etc) which you can start off with and build it up.

Moules - have done a little bit of Bodystep as they have changed one of my regular Body Attack classes to half Bodystep/half Body Attack - and I love the Step part (although am finding it more hard than the Attack part). Would love to do a full class but probably better to wait until after I have the baby.
