Does anyone else go in and find themselves buying the same dress in every colour because it's a fraction of the price you would pay anywhere else and is 100% cotton?

I have the same dress in 5 colours! Surely I'm not the only one...?

I don't know, Pisha, because we're not eligible.

But I read another poster on here in Glasgow posting about them.

Might be a Scottish thing.

LittleDorrit · 25/07/2008 21:38

I agree that there are lots of people that can't afford to spend heaps of money on clothes and if you don't have the money, then questions of ethics, etc don't come into it. BUT I think the vast majority of people who shop at Primark could actually afford to spend a little more and buy things that will last longer - but just buy fewer items. Instead of buying two really cheap dresses, why not buy one? I shop a lot at charity shops and I have noticed lately that they are full of clothes from Primark with the labels still on them.

nappyaddict · 26/07/2008 01:14

I don't shop in primark because of ethical reasons. Also don't do gap.

But who's to say New Look, H&M, Debenhams, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, Next, M&S etc aren't all doing the same as primark and gap but only those 2 are getting slated for it.

Didn't know Tesco was unethical too though. Anyone know about Asda or Sainsbo's?

Clarabumps · 26/07/2008 20:04

the point to consider is, like cardy and several other said, other retailers are doing the exact same thing and we would be naive to think that they aren't. It infuriates me that people think that the people working in a Marks and spencer factory in india or wherever and sitting with big smiles on their faces. Everyone in the clothing industry is exploited- that's how retailers make their money. Some choose to have a bigger mark up than others. I have a variety of clothes from a collection of stores and the wear of them is of much likeness. Primark clothes are not normally lined which tend to make a difference in how they hang but apart from that there is not much difference.

Not eveyone can afford to shop in Marks and Spencer and other more expensive high street stores so Primark offers a good alternative for clothing. There is no way you could convince me that you would rather send you children to school in threadbare clothes than put them in a Primark poloneck for £2?

BabieWabbit · 26/07/2008 20:10

I just buy two of the same thing from primark

hermykne · 26/07/2008 20:19

my friend was a buyer for Primark in ladieswear, highly paid but huge pressure. visited the factories in the far east often but once she had children she then saw through the factory managers display of friendliness when they arrived. they were huge factories in hot hot climates and bales of fabric being pounded thru machines. all smiling at her and her smiling back.

she resigned and that was 8 yrs ago

themoon66 · 26/07/2008 20:19

moondog · 26/07/2008 20:22

I need to tell you that I am in Bangladesh at the moment and if you saw the hellholes where women and children slave to produce this stuff, you would feel like vomiting.

expatinscotland · 26/07/2008 20:24

If I had to go to Bangladesh at all I'd vomit.

The Phillippines was bad enough.

Bluebutterfly · 26/07/2008 20:25

Unless you buy only ethically manufactured clothes with fairtrade labelling, thenit is probable that you have made purchases that support some unethical manufacturing employment practices somewhere in the developing world.

Anyone who wears any high street fashion and claims to be worried about the ethics of one particular high street retailer is a hypocrit.

Bluebutterfly · 26/07/2008 20:27

Nappyaddict, there was an article in one of the broadsheets, can't remember which one, and Asda and Marks were given the thumbs up. Nearly all of Marks clothes used to made in NI, the factories were near me.

moondog · 26/07/2008 20:32

Dhaka staggeringly busy but most of Bangladesh green and lovely. Our street is quiet, lots of banana, mango and coconut trees Parrots everywhere, nowt but sound of rickshaw drivers. Splendid.

moondog · 26/07/2008 20:33
