To married ladies, what have you done with your wedding dress?

Does yours still fit?
It was suggested a while back to make something practical with the material of the skirt but it's still in the berketex carrier. I get it out periodically to try on and take a photo every year but that's it.

In wardrobe, still haven't got around to dry-cleaning it (7 years ago! ).

I'm too big for it now; must trim down in case I need it again .

Come on. It was a joke.

MrsTittleMouse · 11/07/2008 22:11

Mine is at my MIL's house (I hope - I haven't checked since it went there!). I'm keeping it for my DD's to play with when they're older. It certainly won't fit now, I'm heavily pregnant.

OsmosisBanana · 11/07/2008 22:12

I had mine made by a friend who is now costumier for BBC period dramas but at the time was a corsetier in Brsitol. Tis wine red silk taffetta corest with a tight skirt t the knees which kicked out at the bottom and acres of black netting.

Weirdly am not a goth.

Am waiting to become a burlesque performer though.

DH got married in a 70's YSL suit. Hmm.

Dress still comes out from time to time. I wear the corset occasionally.

I have been married twice. My first wedding dress I burned on a bonfire . I felt that as my marriage had been so unhappy and destructive, I didn't want anyone else to wear the dress. I know to some of you that sounds incredibly wasteful and silly but I felt very strongly. I had a bonfire on Guy Fawkes night and tipped it on the fire. I had a great sense of closure.

2nd time round (with my wonderful dh who I am still in love with) I wanted to keep the dress. I had it cleaned, and bought a proper dress from a company called something like the Wedding Box Company. I have it under my bed (it is the only item stored under my bed) in a gorgeous ivory box tied with a beautiful ribbon. I get it out once a year or so and sigh over it as it has such happy memories of the start of my happy marriage. (soppy emoticon)

lol y u left her dress that she wore to arry y dad in the garage when we oed when i was younger

MintChocAddict · 11/07/2008 22:29

In the loft in a bag. Still not been cleaned 3 years down the line. Mind you it's ripped at the back where one of our guests stood on the bottom of while I kept walking! Ooops!
Didn't care though as the dancing had started by then and I'd had a few . Also bought it cheap in a sale in the first wedding shop I visited so wasn't really high on my priority list to start with. If I ever have a DD, she'll just need to buy her own (hopefully in a sale!) .

bonkerz · 11/07/2008 22:31

Mine is in a carrier bag in the cupboard, would still fit and i keep saying im going to make my DCs pillow cases out of it but havent done yet and been married 5 years!

lackaDAISYcal · 11/07/2008 22:37

three years on, still in the bag, with squished strawberries (courtesy of my 3yo DS) on the bottom of it

keep meaning to do something with it, at the very least get it cleaned. I have a DD so maybe it can be made into something for her whan she is older as the silk is really lovely.

tootiredtothink · 11/07/2008 22:42

Mine is hanging up in wardrobe still waiting to be cleaned [tight arse emoticon].

Sadly too small for me now.

lackaDAISYcal · 11/07/2008 22:43

oops, forgot.....I'm pg at the minute, but when I'm not....my dress is too big

and traditionally the christening gown was made from the skirt, and the top tier of the cake was often kept and used as a christening cake.......in the days when babies usually followed on less than a year from weddings.

Janni · 11/07/2008 22:47

I hired mine. Am glad to never have faced this dilemma!

bonkerz · 11/07/2008 22:48

must add mine only cost £64 anyway!

MintChocAddict · 11/07/2008 22:48

My older female relatives insisted on the day that we keep the top tier of the cake for a future (nudge nudge, wink wink)christening!! We kept it in a cupboard and then threw it in the bin after about four months. Needless to say DS hasn't been christened.

cheesesarnie · 11/07/2008 22:49

still fits and still sometimes where it.when i brought it i made sure it was something amazingly pretty but that i could wear again.only thing is when we got married id only had dd 5 weeks earlier and had bigger boobs from bf.now deflated so need padding!

sandy4 · 11/07/2008 22:49

got divorced & gave it to charity

Monty100 · 11/07/2008 23:51

Rolled mine up in a ball and shoved it in the black bin bag with my xdh's clothes the night I was packing his stuff having discovered he and my 'best friend' were having an affair. Don't know what ever became of it tbh. Binned I expect.

Pavlovthecat · 11/07/2008 23:51

In my cupboard, waiting to be cleaned. Still!

MsHighwater · 11/07/2008 23:59

In the loft, in an old (but functional) suitcase. Never got it cleaned. Am counting on my dd to be far too sylphlike to wear my dress when she gets married .

QS · 12/07/2008 00:03

In a box. Should really chuck it to charity.

Tortington · 12/07/2008 00:04

i let my daughter wear it for halloween bride of frankenstein thing - she did this for about 4 years - she got better wear out of it than i did - then i chucked it - it was pretty trashed after that

QS · 12/07/2008 00:06

It for sure is in a better state than my marriage, been kept better too. Really time for somebody else to take over and give it a new lease of life.
