it aint rocket science, but...

don't buy anything UNLESS you know exaclty what you'll wear it with and (crucially) you already have the other items

THis is why I have 8 brown tops.
It makes washing coloureds a whole lot simpler.

do cats wear tops?

wouldnt a tabby pattern suit u better?

bodiddly · 07/07/2008 20:05

I always think of that .. but then tell myself that all tops will go with jeans! I need to think of outfits more though ... definitely - at least then I wouldn't have that constant problem in the morning of not knowing what goes with what and what to put on!

ivykaty44 · 07/07/2008 20:05

If you have nothing to go with 8 brown tops you dont need to wash them

AnyFuleKno · 07/07/2008 20:16

My tip - never buy things from the gap sale even if it is a silk blouse marked at £3.

A;so never buy things that seem like good bargains from TK Maxx because it's a designer label and marked down. It probably doesn't match any of your other clothes if they are all from Next and Gap.

My tip is to move out to the sticks.

Where there are NO shops to buy clothing in unless you count tourist tshirts and it's a major faff to get to any shops.

You'll have to plan every shopping trip with military precision.

Then take your kids along.

That'll put the brakes on impulse buying.

You'll think about purchases for a month or so before finally buying them, and half the time you find you changed your mind and don't really want it anyway.

MinkyChunky · 07/07/2008 20:19

Fabio I love your name.

Carmenere · 07/07/2008 20:19

Wear your most flattering trousers/skirt when buying a top and if it looks shite with them don't buy it.

Toots · 07/07/2008 21:03

Great tip. Wish I'd read it before I went shopping on Friday.

Toots · 07/07/2008 21:04

Seriously - can anyone tell me what I can wear with orange linen trousers apart from white t-shirts. White makes me look like D'Ath.

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/07/2008 21:04

Never, ever buy something that will be a perfect fit "when I've lost half a stone". You can guarantee that said half a stone will only ever vanish once the clothes you bought are pitifully out of fashion.

FabioTheWhisperingCat · 07/07/2008 21:06

Toots - a brown top.

Onlyaphase · 07/07/2008 21:07

Orange linen trousers would look best with a dark brown top. Or black at a push, but brown better

fishie · 07/07/2008 21:10

i've got no brown tops and several skirts which require them fabio.

am much more troubled with how to dress for this ghastly weather. i leave home at 7am too so it is very difficult.

LynetteScavo · 07/07/2008 21:11

I have a friend who only ever buys outfits.

When she told me that, it was as if I'd seen the light. At the time I had 100 items of clothes that didn't go with anything else.

FabioTheWhisperingCat · 07/07/2008 21:19

Never buy a top without some kind of accessory, or knowing what you already have that will go with it.

Heated · 07/07/2008 21:25

LynetteScavo, my super-stylish colleague does this, & buys the accessories at the same time. She hangs them up in the wardrobe together so she doesn't even have to think about what she's wearing in the morning

She's also ruthless about getting rid of anything she's not worn in a twelvemonth.

I really need to follow her example; I have clothes so old they're practically vintage.

LynetteScavo · 07/07/2008 21:59

Heated, I've started to do that with necklaces adn bracelets. I thought I'd invented it, LOL!

MinkyChunky · 07/07/2008 23:24

I saw that in a magazine and thought it was the most saddo thing ever to do but it does work!

myalias · 08/07/2008 08:02

Remember the 3 F's rule
Fit
Fabric
Finish

JaneHH · 08/07/2008 08:18

What about the fourth F, fcolour?

Having "your colours" done is one of the best investments you can make, clothes-wise. If you then only buy suits / trousers / skirts in your neutrals and then tops and accessories in your other, brighter colours then you KNOW everything will go with everything when you get home. Saves you buying that lime green top which is so achingly fashionable but just so achingly awful on your pale English skin.

Does this mean my collection of pale green tshirts is perhaps a good thing?

I do wear them a lot, at least ...
