have started swimming 3 times a week as have been diagnosed with arthritis (at 30, is rubbish) but the chlorine is knackering my hair so me thinks a swimming cap might be in order, but i don't really 'do' sportwear!

this one is more subtle

I'd either think old lady, Esther Williams syncronised swimmer or retro Cathy Kidston gone OTT. Or perhaps someone who really just didn't want to get their hair wet!

Ambi · 03/07/2008 17:54

hmmm sexy!

OverMyDeadBody · 03/07/2008 17:55

I'd think either "" or "wow, there's a very self assured confident lady!"

But that's because I hate drawing attention to myself in public places and am in awe of people who don't mind doing so.

Ambi · 03/07/2008 17:56

this one isn't as flowery

throckenholt · 03/07/2008 17:56

well - can only see the pink one - but I wouldn't be seen dead in that !!!

But - it doesn't really matter what it looks like as long as it is comfortable and works well.

TheFallenMadonna · 03/07/2008 18:02

It would make me smile and I would probably say something like "great hat". Don't normally pass comments at swimming pool attire but would assume that the person wearing it wasn't the shy and retiring type

sagacious · 03/07/2008 18:02

If you were wearing a 50's style swimsuit/bikini and scarlet nail varnish I would be thinking .. hey funky lady

If not then ... errr well its bloody awful

Soz

(Ambi's link I would think professional swimmer)

is the white one better?

OP posts:
frazzledfairy · 03/07/2008 18:05

and it would be teamed with matching swimwear!

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 03/07/2008 18:06

The listing for the white one has been removed apparently.

frazzledfairy · 03/07/2008 18:07

oh right, hmmm, is in the sellers shop, white flower pretty etc etc

Instead of swim caps :Comb conditioner or a teeny amount of baby oil, coconut oil, or olive oil through your hair before swimming. The oil will repel the water and seal the cuticle of the hair shaft acting as a barrier.

Sorted

Ambi · 03/07/2008 18:10

I'm no way a prof swimmer either, (though my DB is). Not a fan of the flowery ones, they a a bit old ladyish, even when they try to jazz them up like this. Although the Turban isn't as bad, I think people will tend to look. I think that there's no such thing as a trendy swimming cap unfortunately.

Ambi · 03/07/2008 18:12

They barrier oil is a good idea sagacious.

Desiderata · 03/07/2008 18:16

These were all the rage in the 70s. I had one myself ... the little plastic flowers came off if you tugged hard enough.

Heifer · 03/07/2008 18:17

I would think, great, everyone will be looking at the ladies hat and not my big wobbly tummy...

I have to say that I would not even wear that in the shower!

Proper swimming hat the only way to go imo...

Carnival · 03/07/2008 18:18

I like the caps, but they are quite ostentatious looking, maybe something a bit calmer?

MmeLindt · 03/07/2008 18:30

I love them, especially if you wore matching swimwear. I would think that you were a self confident woman with a funky sense of style.

chipmonkey · 03/07/2008 19:11

Jackie Onassis used to wear those when she was married to JFK! Does that make them a classic, though?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/07/2008 19:21

I hate to say it but I really think it depends on the person wearing it. I think full make up would be needed to pull it off and even then the person should ideally be kind of funky. Then people will think you're starting a new trend.

If the person wearing it generally looks a bit frumpy then people will snigger and think mad woman.

I love it but don't think I could pull it off as am to much of a frump. Some of my friends would look fab in it though.

macherie · 03/07/2008 21:05

I was looking at these on ebay too, I'm learning to swim and a bit worried about my coloured hair. I think the caps are fantastic, but in the end I got a leave in conditioner from Boots, called surf and swim I think. It's bright blue, but you don't see that when it's on. Coat your hair in it before you go in the pool, then wash afterwards in the matching shampoo. It's great, I've been swimming 3-4 times a week for a month and my hair is in great conditon (and hasn't gone green!)
