I am a new mum - will I regret getting my long hair chopped off?

Don't know whether it is my hormones but my hair is really greasy (nice!) and I am having to wash and style it practically every day so I thought it would be nice to have more of a style. Thinking of a new-style bob type thing (you can tell that I have really thought about this!). Will I regret not being able to tie it back do you think? Argggghh! I can't make up my mind. Going to watch Criminal Justice but back later.

Don't do it unless you are really sure. I cut my hair off into a bob after having DD and 1 year on I'm still growing it out and trying to get my locks back.I actually found a bob much more high maintenance.

moondog · 02/07/2008 22:07

Do nowt whaen hormones are raging.

Desiderata · 02/07/2008 22:08

No leave it. Please don't 'get 'a 'bob^.

Soooooooo Mumsy

Desiderata · 02/07/2008 22:08

I knew that would fuck up

Indith · 02/07/2008 22:09

Oh god don't do it! You say you are a new mum, will you really have the time to style short hair? At least long you can shove in a bun, short will need washing even more often, drying and styling like mad!

dinny · 02/07/2008 22:09

yes, don't have a bob!! you MUST be able to have a ponytail!!!

traceybath · 02/07/2008 22:09

Have 3 year old and 6 month old. I grew my hair longer before birth of youngest so i could tie it back during the sleep deprivation period as have to get up early to take eldest to pre-school.

I did have a fringe cut which i sort of wear swept across so still looks reasonable tied back. But takes minutes after quick wash and dry each morning.

I'm going back to bob soon as am more organised now and not quite so exhausted.

giddykipper · 02/07/2008 22:10

A bob is quite high maintenance, it needs to be looked after to look good and you can't just pull it into a bobble if it's on the cusp of mankiness.

DeeRiguer · 02/07/2008 22:10

no i say go short for summer give new style a chance
talk to hairdresser look at pics
twill always grow back i would give it a whirl

FromGirders · 02/07/2008 22:10

Do you have to style it after washing? My hair is between shoulder and waist length - every morning I wash it in the shower, towel dry and comb, then twist it up into a french roll while it's still damp. Takes about a minute - much less than blow-drying / straightening or whatever. Also means when I let it down at the end of the day, I've got nice waves in it.
And i don't have exorbitant haridressing costs. Just chop an inch or two off it every now and again when the ends get tail-ly.

foofi · 02/07/2008 22:10

Looked on your profile to get an idea of your hair, but the photos show someone with almost none!!

Seriously, I would say don't cut it short if you're unsure - it will take a long time to grow back. Perhaps you could have a bit of a change some other way - eg add some layers or have a colour done?

cmotdibbler · 02/07/2008 22:14

I'm like FromGirders - wash and clip up most of the time, and a cut when I remember. Long hair is soo low maintenance - when I had short hair it was nothing but a daily hassle that had to be washed and blow dried properly

ThursdayNext · 02/07/2008 22:15

How new a mum are you? If you're a very new mum you should probably lie down in a dark room whenever possible and take no rash decisions for some time.

But just to be the voice of dissent - if the baby is a good few months old then a new hair cut may be just the thing. I got my hair cut short when DS was about 6 months (quite short, cropped rather than bobbed) and I felt and looked much better than when I was greasy and lank and manky. Made me feel kind of more organised and together.

devonsmummy · 02/07/2008 22:29

Keep it long!

I had mine cut into a 'graduated bob' on saturday as I was fed up with it in a ponytail all the time.

Now i have to wash it every day instead of every other day. Plus blow dry and straighten.

It's a pain in the arse!!

scoobi6 · 02/07/2008 22:44

I've always had mine long and when I went to get it cut they'd say "have a bob" and it was AWFUL everytime. One side would curl in, one side would curl out, always a complete mess unless I spent ages styling it. So I'd grow it long and put it up again.

Just recently went to a lovely hairdresser who listened to me when I said toddlers and hair in my face don't mix. Now its proper short and "tousled" look and I love it

It is so easy, looks ok even if I just crawl out of bed and run my hands through it. Very quick to wash and dry. Toddler can't get hold of it and yank. Its off my face.

So I'd say either keep it long, or go very short. No bob!

Should have said; not a really new mum - DS is 7 months! How did that happen?!

Thanks for all the responses. I don't have to style it, I can just let it dry and it goes kind of curly but I just feel such a rag bag at the moment, I am trying to get my head around going back to work in September and I just wanted to look efficient and on top of things.

Foofi - lol, my ds doesn't have this dilemma does he? I have posted a pic of me now with the same bloody hair-style I have had since school...Grrr.

But you are all right, I am rubbish at anything that needs maintenance. Maybe I'll just get a fringe and a few layers cut in...

Short hair sounds devine by the way but I don't think I would suit - I am not elfin like!

Bugger it, get it cut off !! I am not pixie like or elfin but I stand out amongst my friends as I am one of two with a mega short a la Agyness Deyn hair do. I would not turn back now and I don't have to spend hours taming it in the morning, Just give it a brush with my hands and I am off !! I love bobs but I think if you're going to do a new look hair do, why not be adventurous and remember it'll always grow !!

thumbwitch · 03/07/2008 00:34

i agree with scoobi6 - if I thought for one second that having hair that short would suit me (it sooo wouldn't) then I would ave my ponytail cut off. As it is, the ponytail is staying - so much easier to be able to tie it back. My biggest problem is that my hair really does grow very slowly so any major chop would take years to grow out again, if I hated it.

Alternatively you could always shave your head and get a wig

Don't get it cut!

Your hair is lovely!

If you feel like a change, talk to your hairdresser about changing your fringe, so it's more sweeping, but DON'T cut off your length. It's gorgeous, and I think without it you'd feel such a Mom.

stuffitllama · 03/07/2008 07:31

yes don't "get a bob"
nonsense
keep it long if you want it long

DonutMum · 03/07/2008 10:52

Don't do it!!! I had my hair cut short after ds2 and still cringe at the photos...Remember your hair mught start falling out so you'll end up with less than you thought. It's taken me 3 years to get my hair back the way I like it.
