I am useless with make up - if I post a pic of my colouring can you help me?

I am crap with make up basically!

I am also very underconfident with my looks. I am thinking of trying mineral foundation and have no idea what shade - everytime i go into the department stores they advise me and I end up feeling its wrong.

I have oily skin so wondered if mineral foundation would suit me.

But....biggest prob is eyes - mine are blue, so what colour shadow should i use and how do i do it so it looks good. I've watched all the videos and still cant do it.

I have a do to go to soon (the ball i have bored you all about) i want my hair curled and want then want my make up to look good but have no idea.

I'll post a pic of me, but bare with me - I hate photos, its the only one i have on pc and I have NEVER posted one of me on here before. And believe me, I'm no oil painting. Please be gentle.

is mineral foundation any better for oily skin do you know?

I think i may try again at weekend and go and ask at one of the counters.

why not go and get made up again at a store? Clinique or Bobbi Brown are good at make overs.

Lily Lolo stuff (mineral) is great... but very messy. Your bathroom ends up looking like Miss Haversham's boudoir. I use it for "special" nights and stick with the l'orealy for everyday as it is much easier to apply IMO.

My top tip for greasy skin (are you me?!?) is to just wash with aquaeous cream. Greasy skin is easily aggravated into producing more grease by using anti-grease products IMO. Do you use greasy skin products?

triffictits · 02/07/2008 22:43

Yes i do winestein! I have tried everything! I use matt fluid for moisturiser - Clarins - any my face is worse than ever. I will try some aquaeous cream - I'll try anything. Is it a cream, or a lotion? Does it just rinse off?

Can you buy Lily Lolo stuff in shops? Need to go to shops for it really first to see if i can get a good colour match. Is it less oily then? I can just use it for nights out.

I used to be a make up artist so I hope this is helpful- I find mineral makeup can be hard to apply lightly and it can look thick and ageing, but you might find a light dusting works for you.I think founation anyway is totally over rated and you are better off using something like Chantecaille just skin which is a tinted moisturiser but in fact is quite matt and dry,the other product that I rate is by Terry light expert.I have both of these myself and they are expensive but will last ages and make you look great, honestly. They sell them mail order from SpaceNK and could advise you which shade to choose, you don't need as clear a colour match as with regular foundation, and the light expert you just use in the "shadows" of your face, such as around the eye socket and in nose to mouth grooves etc, also on top of cheekbones and along brow.brown eye shadow hardly works on anyone. If you really want eyeshadow try and get to a bobbi brown counter and get some help with shades as they won't leave you looking like Steve Strange on a night out.otherwise just a soft blur of liner in a plummy colour or a navy or grey, worked in to the lashes at the top only and a coat of a good mascara,l'oreal have a great lengthening one (in black)lip colour is harder to judge as you o need to try it but again bobbi brown or prescriptives should have some soft colours that would suit you.you look really pretty in your pic by the way.a bit of cream blush worked into the apples of your cheeks, and you are sorted.I really hope this makes sense ,I am sleep deprived!

winestein · 02/07/2008 22:50

Aquaeous cream comes in a huge tub from any pharmacist and costs about £2. It feels a bit odd to take a handful and wash your face in it to start with but you get used to it. Stick with it for a bit - your skin will still be producing extra oil from using "products".

here is lilylolo's website. I have linked to the foundation page where you will note the colours are seperated into neutrals and warms etc. Also see that there is an option for a 99p trial sie which I would thoroughly recommend. You need a good quality brush to apply it as it comes as a fine powder. It looks fantastic.

winestein · 02/07/2008 22:53

I agree that minerals can be Hellymelly - hence the potential for Miss Havershams boudouir! With practice they can look fab though.

triffictits · 02/07/2008 23:00

i have just ordered
In The Buff
Popcorn
Popsicle

all to trial - thanks for tip!

I will get some cream too.

Thank you helly - great info there and helpful.

does it look fab because you think that brand is fantastic, or does all mineral make up look fab?

OP posts:
winestein · 02/07/2008 23:17

I have only ever used Lilylolo. It does look fab though . Now get thee self a fabulous powder brush. And I DO mean fabulous. Lilylolo actually sell one they recommend for applying. If you use a cheap brush you will lose half of the product!

winestein · 02/07/2008 23:20

Can I make a Mystic Meg prediction? "Popcorn" will look baaaad.

cadelaide · 02/07/2008 23:22

triffictits, just looked at your pic, you're lovely.

winestein · 03/07/2008 08:24

It just came to me this morning, as I was slapping my foundation on, that it's not l'oreal I use, it's lancome. Must have been the wine!!!

triffictits · 03/07/2008 09:48

that is one brand i have never used winestein.

I am now looking forward to the weekend to go and try all this make up on!

triffic just to say you are v cute and fresh and waaaay too hard on yourself. Looks like you have great skin & no dark circles under your eyes . Unlike me who is glued to my YSL concealer for under eyes & around nostrils.

Here is my 2 p's worth on the make up:
Agree with winstein l'oreal foundations are good for the price (and with a good light face moisturiser used regularly, applied 1st thing in the morning, mid-range foundations go on a lot smoother - a top tip I got from a famous beauty ).

Then apply black/brown mascara (lashings, mainly on the upper)
Dab of blusher on the apples of your cute cheeks
Dabs of l'oreal true match powder on your forehead, nose & chin

And the icing on the cake: clear lipgloss (lots) - more flattering for us who lack an Angelia Jolie pout, no?

Good luck & have fun at the Ball! x

triffictits · 03/07/2008 19:40

thank you mandy

i may well try some mid range then for a chnage.

Think i will go to the Mac counter when i go at weekend - they have some good colours dont they.

Tt, of course you hadn't upset me

It was my bedtime............

fizzbuzz · 03/07/2008 20:29

I think you look like a cool clouring as well.

Grey also drains me, and I am a coll colour person. Threfore I have to ask who does suit grey? 2 cool based people (or possibly 3) on here) and it makes us all look ill.

I would love to be able to wear a colour like grey or black, but they do not love me

triffictits · 03/07/2008 21:45

i'm glad fizz

I am now thinking the same about brown - people saying that the 'experts' tell us brown is the colour, yet we look awful in it.

I can wear black and its ok but grey isnt good for me.

Carnival · 03/07/2008 21:54

TT - I know this might sound odd, but have you tried gold on your lids? We have a similar colouring and it suits me, as does a teal colour. Just a thought.

triffictits · 03/07/2008 22:07

funny you say that carnival - i used gold a few weeks ago when i was on holiday - it was nice, but i think the one i bought was a few shades too bright.
