What shoes for balloon trousers??

roshi42 · Today 02:52

I’ve bought these sequin balloon trousers from Tu - I unexpectedly really love them and would wear them to a Christmas do. But what shoes??

In general, what shoes are supposed to work with balloon style trousers - or barrel shape when worn just above the ankle as you often see them?

I’d definitely wear with similar shoes to the model, pointed flats or kitten heels. If wearing only inside maybe a sling back or pointed mule?
I think anything too heavy doesn’t look right so not sure they’d go with boots, even very fitted sock boots.

EleanorMc67 · Today 03:34

I was about to say exactly the same as @fiorentina! The pointed flats really work as they too have a bit of an oriental/harem look about them. And if you want a heel, I'd go with something like one of these closed-toe mules (Reformation, Next, John Lewis).

I would wear them with chunky flat black lace-up or plain boots if I was dressing down for a slightly less glam occasion. With something like a fine, open-weave black mohair jumper on top, to mix & contrast textures & tones of black.

Ooh, thanks both of you. I can’t help but think those kitten heel slingbacks look so uncomfortable, but maybe just for the work do indoors and then trainers for going home!!

I wondered about brogues? Or even heeled brogues. Or slipper style loafers maybe.

and thanks @EleanorMc67- I have this top which I also like but the sequins are goldish whereas they’re silver on the trousers so I’m not sure it works! Also perhaps too much of a stark difference / change - cuts the body up a bit. Black but a different texture might be the way to go - something a bit fluffy is a great shout!

Womens Cream Sequin Slash Neck Jumper

This cream jumper is a great update for your new season wardrobe. In a soft knit featuring a slash neckline, long sleeves and a subtle, scattered sequin design, it will add an elevated feel to any outfit.

Hmmm. Brogues aren't what would have entered my head as an option to wear with these tbh - I can't imagine them? By slipper loafers do you mean backless loafers? As I am not sure about anything with a loafer-style front working either. Though backless slipper-type flats in velvet or satin - or suede or leather - would.

The jumper would make it too sequinned overall for my taste. I don't think it really goes - I'd probably wear it with indigo denim, or cream matte satin wide trousers for a more elegant dressy look. I love a bit of angora/mohair/general fluffiness with sequins or leather or satin - especially in the same colour. It makes the outfit look more expensive IMO!

I think you could also wear the thing style kitten heels that are everywhere at the moment?

OP, if a pointed toe slingback isn’t appealing to you then you could get a similar slim/neat look by going with a high vamp ballerina, like these ones from Cos:

https://www.cos.com/en-gb/women/accessories/shoes/balletpumps/product/leather-ballet-flats-white-1357138005

I think you need something quite neat/minimal to balance the drama of the balloon leg. Black would continue the line all the way through if you like, but I quite like the idea of wearing them with a black top that shows a bit of skin and the red or white shoes for a party.

fiorentina · Today 08:25

I’d not wear a sequin top with sequin trousers
personally. I agree something fluffy or a plain thin knit would be good, or a plain black body, or similar with some nice jewellery and a smart blazer.

I think brogues are too heavy. For more casual I’d be more likely to wear a slimline trainer.

Nayone · Today 10:37

sorry op but that jumper doesn't work. you need something very simple and plain. a black vest or short sleeved t shirt (fitted) in nice material would work. brogues will not work with these trousers either.

dudsville · Today 10:52

The thread title is misleading in the sense that these are no ordinary balloon trousers, these are fancy party trousers! So whatever rules you might normally apply to denim or cord versions do not apply here. I think the pointy sling back delicate shoes listed here are perfect, but not what I would wear with my denim and cord versions.

Is it sub-tropical where you live, Minnow?! As it's definitely not thong weather here in Edinburgh today!

(I have hated just looking at pictures of those kitten-heeled toe-post sandals all summer - let alone wearing them! It actually gives me a weird queasy feeling wearing any kind of toepost sandal, where there's pressure on the skin between the big & second toe. And it would be even worse with a heel, as that bit would bear the whole weight of the body against it! It's clearly just a me thing, as so many people have been wearing them, but it's a definite physical reaction for me!)

Alittlefrustrated · Today 11:06

Definitely not brogues, loafers, or that jumper OP - they totally miss the mark.
I'd wear ballet flats (the pointy sling backs make me uncomfortable just looking at them, but otherwise good).

Torchout · Today 11:07

Pointy shoes should be banned thay really damage your feet. Is wear a pair of almond toes ballet flats or my Arabic embroidered slippers

DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised · Today 11:11

These trousers definitely take inspiration from the Indian sub-continent, and there, you would wear something like this with open-toe shoes, sandals or flats. Nothing with too much heel. I do like the the model has styled them, the trousers are your statement piece, so keep everything else simple?

Hmm, a silky or satin black top might well work, thanks @fiorentina!

Thanks everyone! I think the kitten heels are probably spot on but I think I’m too tall/big/heavy/old for my feet to take it! Plain black ballet flats may well be the safest.

Definitely take the point about the trousers are the statement and go subtle with the rest - and all black.

thanks all!

Yeah I find them difficult to style at this them of year. Kitten heel or delicate shoe is good. I wore them lots with flip flops and sandals in the summer. A heavy shoe wouldn’t work..

Cherrytree86 · Today 12:33

I wouldn’t bother wearing them to a Christmas do OP too much faff to pair them up with stuff that’s gonna look decent.

Not just a you thing, I love the look of them but wouldn't consider wearing them myself for the reasons you said. Don't mind a rubber flip flop at all but the thought of a hard leather toe post heeled sandal makes me shudder.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · Today 12:40

None. Throw the trousers away. They don’t look good on anyone.

Completely detailing now, but I found some great ones this summer that had clearly been designed by someone who actually thought about the toe post + heel issue. It was a low kitten heel with a slingback strap, and a thin strap over the front of the foot near the toe post AND a tbar type strap up the instep. And the sole was cushioned. Result = no flipping, no flopping, no sliding into the toe post.

So that was my summer shoe, and I felt comfortable and smug throughout July and August. Won’t be wearing it for Christmas, mind.

That was true 30 years ago, but most pointed toe shoes don’t put any pressure on your toes these days. If they do, they don’t fit!

My pointed toe flats actually let my toes spread more than my actual trainers do. Highly recommended.

Mulledjuice · Today 12:49

last time those trousers were in I wore silver ballroom sandals à la Kylie

HopeMumsnet · Today 13:38

Hi all,
We know that the balloon trouser is a controversial style topic (though a godsend for those of us with a body type best described as "Halls Soother on cocktail sticks") however we could probably do with fewer drive by posts from the naysayers on these Style and Beauty threads. Not everything has to be to everyones' taste. Do feel free to engage, of course, but the 'it's all yuk' discourse is best avoided, we feel.

I don't even like the look of the really "naked" ones - they make feet look slightly obscene to me! Whereas I have no issues with (clean, well-cared for) completely bare feet!

I did see some along those lines & liked them, as yes, they're actually designed for walking in without slipping all over the place!!
