Ankle boots that look great with dresses but are comfortable

I am really struggling to find some nice ankle boots that will also be comfortable. I used to have some great ones from Russell and Bromley. I would prefer not completely flat - just a one inch block heel.

i bought some of those slightly taller chunky Chelsea boots that everyone has been wearing but I think my ankles are too narrow for them and so my heel moves and they are really uncomfortable.

Docs. Any type.

Absolute agony for several breaking in weeks - then fit like a glove.

EarlofShrewsbury · 21/10/2026 17:44

I've got a pair of lanx dinckley boots and I love them.

They have that old fashioned balmoral style.

I feel like a victorian mill worker in them.

Twisting · 21/10/2026 20:46

Dr marten Chelsea boots. In 2 colours. Greatest dms I've ever had. I have thin feet, thin ankles and longish legs and they work really well. No slippage or anything.

WhereAreWeNow · 21/10/2026 20:53

Gabor for me

HoneyButterPopcorn · 21/10/2026 21:19

I always look for ones that look like flat ice skating boots.

Gosh are people really paying over £300 for boots? No way could I spend that.
they are lovely though …

Not me. I buy from charity shops or ebay. I also sell and donate.

I would not pay over £40 for footwear, I found it was replacing things regularly.

I bought my £220 boots because DP kept telling me it would be worth it in the long run and offered to pay for them as a present.

Best thing I ever bought clothes wise. I've had them a year now and they still look new and smell new.

I feel more confident in them. I think it's true what people say about footwear.

Can’t go wrong with Dr. Martens

You can. They are of varying quality.

I've never managed to break a pair in. Pikolinos are my go-to.

I’ve got these to wear with midi skirts, they’re beautiful and comfy and not made in a sweatshop. I have the “50” style (linked) which has a higher slimmer heel, but you can also get a “20” style with a lower block heel.

eta: You can find them on Vinted and eBay if you want to save a few pounds on them!

Edited

If I could do a "supermarket sweep" in a shoe shop, it would be this one. I covet almost everything. And they're so comfortable (well, the one pair I have is!).

EleanorMc67 · 22/10/2026 00:51

What kind of dresses do you wear, OP? As I have a few ankle boot styles that I wear, depending on the length & style of the dresses/skirts I wear. I have skinny feet & ankles too.

I have chunky-ish Chelsea boots, pointed toe ankle boots with a kitten heel (more for going out), & lace-up ankle boots (again chunky-ish but not overly so). The last of these is the style that goes with most.

The lace-up pair I wear most is my Zadig & Voltaire Joe boots. They're narrow-fitting &, I would say, slightly on the small side. They do a different variant each year, so there are quite a few styles around. The first image is the style I have. I didn't pay £500 though - I found them on eBay (after a long wait) for under £100.

For anyone who doesn’t yet know. Dr Martens were sold out. So now made in China. The original factory still makes them under Solovair label and much better quality.

BandyUrnham · 22/10/2026 10:39

DMs are now fashion shoes. They are not of the same quality as they used to be.
The 'Made in England' ones are fine, but why pay the extra when Solovair are so similar?
I like a lot of the DM styles but they're expensive for shoes that won't last long.

sillysusan · 22/10/2026 14:09

Aw ok, I adore my Dr Martens Virginia - 6 years old now and still loads of wear left in them. The Virginias are soft so don’t need “breaking in” as such, I never had a problem

Twisting · 22/10/2026 21:50

I had my first pair of dms in 1995. They moulded my feet to them. I wore them until they literally fell apart- flappy soles and everything.

I was unfaithful to the mighty doc for a long time; seduced by combat boots then new rocks. Then came back to them about 8 years ago. They're lasting well, but unlike 15 yr old me, I don't wear them all day everyday and twice at weekends.

Probably not quite the thing you mean, OP, but I felt a bit bored of the Chelsea boot/DM/biker boots and dress combo this year. I love a clunky boot, but yes, bored of it, basically.

So, this is my new direction, and I'm loving it Grin

I was looking at those the other day and adore them. They’d be too narrow for me sadly: not a problem for the OP

No one seems to have mentioned Lanx yet? I haven’t worn them myself but plenty of people appear to adore them. The Edisford looks the smartest of the Chelsea boots - but they do rather beautiful lace up ankle boots too.

I have the Lanx chipping in black (they are the lace up ones) and they are lovely https://lanxshoes.com/collections/womens-boots/products/chipping-black. I also have a pair of DMs Flora (the Chelsea boot) https://www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/flora-smooth-leather-chelsea-boots-black/p/32217001 a pair of Barbour Chelsea boots from a few years ago with tartan on them, and two pairs of Loake chelsea boots (I don't think they do them any more, but they may be on Vinted). All are very comfortable. The Lanx and the DMs work best with dresses.

I have several pairs of Lanx, an everyday pair, my walking boots and a grippy pair for icy weather. They wear very well so are worth the price, but as another poster said they aren’t what you would wear for a night out or to a smart office.

These are gorgeous. I love the lace up boot look

Helppleasestuck · 23/10/2026 09:47

I also have these Hush boots which I love. Bought my first pair a few years ago, then they eventually fell apart so I bought another pair in the sale for about £80 as they seemed to still be available, which are lasting well so far.

I had those and they were not good quality and they don't do half-sizes.

If you want the perfect boot, you need these:fDarcie DMs

Dead comfy, look amazing with dresses and skirts.
