I'm in 40's yesterday I wore the below dress to work with thick black 100 denier tights and black boots. It's knee length as I'm 5 ft 3 and a bit.. a colleague who's a few years old then me said oh that's short but its knee length on me. I'm size 8 to 10 so it's rather loose and not tight and I'm not busty like the model.. quite flat chested. What do other ladies think I was a bit hurt.

Older than me I said because she is oldest there thinks she is in charge because she keeps making point of saying you young lassess etc..

Your description made me think of someone older I worked with when in my 20s. She was like meaner version of Kim from 'How Clean is your House'.
In a previous job there was someone who looked kind but she wasn't. She had lost a lot of weight and was wearing her pre-weight gain (and loss) office clothes.
I am now that age and hope I'm not like either of them.

There have been some absolutely lovely older women (and men) at most places and the mean ones were one-offs.

I worked at one place and the department secretary (yes, I'm that old) and she was small, slim and very pretty, and a complete bitch.

I'd ignore her comments. Knee-length dress with opaque tights is hardly flaunting your legs. She's probably just jealous.

Thanks so much. Being in such a small team in a small office means we are together a lot she kind if makes comments in everything and everyone. I might be a bit sensitive at the moment too as have had quite a few health issue going on

At size 8-10 OP I’m sure you can easily wear that pretty dress a lot shorter than knee length to work and get away with it - if you’ve got opaque tights on they generally make dresses look decent whatever the length.
I think she’s just jealous! When I was younger I got critical remarks from certain women at work for wearing perfume and lipstick!
And recently I was accused of deliberately wearing ‘push up bras’, I was like, no, this is my chest in a bra.

It doesn’t even look short on the (presumably 5ft 10 - 6 ft) model!

Ignore her!

HugoThatway · 11/10/2026 13:11

@Happydays777 , keep a record of other things she's said too. Otherwise ignore her. It does get to you though - I worked somewhere where someone from another section always went 'Ugh! I don't know how you can eat that' about my lunch every day, even after I told her that she didn't need to comment on it.
God knows what her problem was but it was off-putting.

You deserve to work somewhere where your colleagues do not make unwanted and unwarranted personal remarks.

Sorry she was having a dig. Ive worked with some nasty women over the years in office based environments. Nothing about me was ever right.

It’s a perfectly acceptable dress for the office. Next time just say well I’m comfy in it and move on. Don’t let her upset you.
