Another Mother of the bride......

My daughter is having her civil ceremony on Easter Sunday in London next year. I've bought this Roksanda Maite dress to wear but I'm not sure about accessories with it being such a dramatic dress.
Will I need a coat? I definitely want a hat but what type? I do favour a large hat!
I'm a size 12/14 depending on the cut/ style. Budget is quite flexible.

@GarlicEverything I'm liking the burgundy sling backs 😀
Not keen on the gold or the patterned.
I'm thinking along the lines of "old school glamour" with the fur stole and dress shape! I know big hats aren't popular for weddings but I'll only be MOB once so I'm going for it! 🤣

My mum did the big hat and regretted it a bit cos it got i the way.of hugs and kisses
Absolutely love your dress. I volunteer jealous of your waist.

MissFritton65 · 08/10/2026 21:54

@Pearlstillsinging I agree I need to find shoes and a hat to match the cape/ drape colour!
The mink stole idea was genius although my daughter is skeptical! I'm loving the old school glamour idea - suits my vibe as an old, glamorous headmistress! 🤣🤣

@gingercat02 there will only be 10 of us on this occasion so not loads of kissing! I do love a big hat.

Insane headdress 😄 They say they'll change the colour/(s) to order - there's a customer photo with gold & orange feathers. This was the nicest insane hat (IMO) I saw, and they're made in Yorkshire rather than being multi-listed from Temu or Ali Express.

There are a LOT of insane hats on Etsy, though! I'm slightly freaked out that you can buy a sinamay base for about £40, then the same one's suddenly £200 when it's got some flowers or ribbons attached. I should go into millinery ...

@GarlicEverything that is insane! Struggling to see it working with the beautiful mink stole idea! I'm more a "traditional" big hat girl!
This is me at a family wedding in the summer!

Oh, you do wear it well!

MissFritton65 · 08/10/2026 22:31

@GarlicEverything thank you! I carried that hat from Manchester to London to Nice (and back again) as it was far too big for my suitcase! There were only 5 ladies in hats at the wedding but I'm "old school" - if it's a family wedding, I wear a hat!

My DD is doing the legal bit in November. Faux fur jacket for me! The Arab wedding was where? London at Easter? I quite like Hostie hats. Various colours available if you give them notice. It would just be heeled pumps for me.

OnSeriousEarth · 08/10/2026 22:52

How depressing that you think mink is glamorous. Nice dress - why ruin it wearing the dead pelt of a tortured animal.

MissFritton65 · 08/10/2026 22:53

@MeetMeOnTheCorner there are some really beautiful hats on Hostie website; thank you as I've not heard of them before.

@MissFritton65 I'm MoB in August. We favour different styles and that's as things should be. However, my dd and many of her friends would be incandescent if I wore mink. I'd take care with that.

MissFritton65 · 08/10/2026 23:08

@OnSeriousEarth it's vintage mink; It's been dead over 70 years! I hope 70 years after my death, people still think I'm glamorous. You probably think that's shallow but my husband died at 60 a few months ago and I'm embracing life having had to face the it's harsh realities.

I think a pill box lind of hat would.look fabulous.

MissFritton65 · 08/10/2026 23:25

@ILoveKits thank you for your advice but my daughter and the majority of her friends eat meat and wear leather shoes so I can't think they'd have an issue with me wearing a 70 year vintage mink. They'd probably be far more incensed if I wore a garment produced by child labour in a factory in the Far East despite that seeming to be acceptable by many people in this country!

Definitely NO to the mink stole. That is gross sorry. Faux fur all the way.

Eating meat and wearing leather shoes is one thing. If you eat meat then you have a moral responsibility to use all of the animal. As far as I know no one eats mink.
I think it's a shame to taint the day.

DoubleShotEspressox · 09/10/2026 06:35

I can’t help with accessories but you look fucking gorgeous.

The only person whose day is at risk of being tainted is you (or other hand wringing wetwipes on the internet).

Firstly, I'm very sorry for your loss OP.
Secondly, wear the mink. You will look incredible. Dress is 👌 also 😍 .

My day won't be tainted by anyone else's questionable clothing choices. While you are perfectly at liberty to disagree with my view that it's unacceptable to wear garments their last owner died in, it's not acceptable to be so rude. Can you try to disagree politely?

Newkicks · 09/10/2026 07:20

Stunning!

MimosasAnytime · 09/10/2026 07:22

I have this dress in a different colour way! Looks great. My thoughts are a little different to PP - I think this dress in real life is so dramatic (the shoulder cape billows wonderfully) that too much else is overkill.

I think a big hat is too much. We are all different, but I wore mine to a wedding (and to lots of other events - it is a very versatile dress!) with a clutch, a long cape and heels and that was it.

The shoulder cape causes real difficulties for cover ups. I think you either need a coat long enough to cover it and wear it off the shoulder, or a long cape. Something in a colour that matches the cape underside would be ideal.

PineappleSunrise · 09/10/2026 08:29

I tend to agree with Mimosas - the dress IS the statement and needs little else in the way of accessories. A statement hat (much as I love them) will be fighting for attention.

I agree with the idea of toning in the shoes and keeping them simple, and with a long coat worn off shoulder and a clutch. A stole could be fine as long as everything else is very pared back, and it may also depend on your height. If you’re tall long lines like a coat or cape are best, if you’re shorter the stole ending at waist-level will be fine.

JudyBlumesBlubber · 09/10/2026 08:36

Nothing constructive to add but just want to say this is one of the nicest mother of the bride/groom outfits I’ve seen here.

Stunning and you wear it so well!

Comeonbabyblue · 09/10/2026 08:38

If you could get to liverpool I'd 100% try and get an appointment at Felicity hat hire boutique. I'm sure she does online although not sure and I know theres hats and fascinators everywhere but this place is something else 👌
You look stunning in that dress, it's gorgeous. I love the inside of the cape is a different colour and a hat and shoes the same colour as that will be stunning.

Seaside3 · 09/10/2026 10:00

I wrote pillbox hat and ran last night. I agree with pp, a big hat isn't necessary, the dress is the statement. I'm inclined to suggest shoes in the same colour, a small pillbox (same colour as dress) and a cape in the colour of the inside of the swishy bit. Think Jackie Kennedy and that ilk.
