High street fashion is so awful at the moment?

Just been into town. Went to Primark, M&S and Next. I am after a winter dress, but primark had no dresses at all, Next only had 2 casual type dresses (both denim shirt type dress), M&S was all brown and beige and over priced.
I don’t have a huge amount of money to spend on clothes, I have gained a little weight (thanks menopause) and my trousers are a little uncomfortable so I wanted a dress that I could layer and wear with tights and boots as it gets cooler, possibly needle cord in a plain colour. I was hoping to grab something in town whilst shopping with dd but the clothes in the shops are just disappointing.

Are there any good online shops with high street prices?

Before anyone suggests vinted, I have been looking but can’t really find what I am looking for…..I’m not even sure I know what I am looking for.

I’ve found the opposite and want to buy everything. I really suit autumn colours and already have a lot of bags and jackets that look lovely with all the new stuff out.

Just looked at George @ Asda's sale.
That's time I'll never get back.

(If you want bikinis, it should be fine for you.) Rolls eyes..

I'm looking for a decent top to wear to a wedding with some navy wide leg trousers. We've been told to avoid dark colours and I'm trying to avoid white. I went into town today and just couldn't find anything to even try on, let alone buy.

Try Boden dresses on Vinted.

Nobody’s Child do lovely needle cord pinafores. I’m about to put a dark green one, size 12 on Vinted. Worn once. I bet there’s loads on there.

But why are you wearing navy trousers if the dress code specifically says to avoid dark colours, @Thegirlwhowent?

Rejoinedforthis · 11/10/2026 01:47

I know what you mean. It’s funny, because I’ve had the most success in two polar opposite places (as a tall woman with one boob so LOTS of things look odd on me) TU at Sainsbury’s and two independent boutiques in my town that stock brands I’ve never heard of and once I’d plucked up the courage to go in actually found me outfits that made me feel nice 🙂 which is no easy feat these days 🫠

Good point! Well, I'm wearing them because I've already got them and they're the only wedding-suitable things I own. And it did say on the invitation to avoid dark colours 'if possible '. I thought it will be ok if the top half is pale. Also, I can't stand being told what to wear, don't want to spend money on something I won't otherwise wear, and can't really see why it matters. If they want the day to be good on camera, I'm happy not to be photographed. And I hope the marrying couple have better things to think about on the day than the colour of my trousers!

The shirt style dresses are too long on me (unless petite). I think I a, going to buy the longer dress from Roman as they are giving me free postage and £10 off. I have found a few others on vinted.
