Mother of the Groom in 8 weeks!

ihaveafavouritecat · 02/10/2026 11:29

Please help me! My son is getting married in 8 weeks and I haven’t a clue what to wear. So far I’ve ordered three dresses online (Coast, Lavish Alice and Florere) and have sent them all back. Earlier this week I had a personal stylist appointment at John Lewis, bought 3 items (Hobbs dress, Reiss dress and Phase Eight jumpsuit), but not sure any of them are right. Also ordered a jumpsuit from Me+Em, not yet received. I don’t know if that will be right either, I know it will need shortening about 6 inches!
I’m 5’3, 9st 6, have lost 7 stone over last 3 years. Blue eyes, brown hair/blond highlights. i think the colours that suit me best are greens/golds/sandy but not at all rigid except that pastel colours make me look washed out.
There’s a register office wedding service and then the bigger wedding ‘do’ 3 days later, so I need two outfits! Budget about £400ish for both. I just feel so much of what I’m seeing is so ‘bland’ and ordinary, I want to feel a bit more cool and funky but still smart of course.
Would really appreciate some help or suggestions of makers/brands I’m not aware of… thanks in advance.

Florere dress in teal and a size 8 - I previously tried 10. Sleeves well pushed up, length maybe ok?!

Ok well that hands down beats the awkward length dresses for me.

I think it even beats the jumpsuit...

Could you do the jumpsuit for one and this for the other.

That looks beautiful thought the waist area.

Calliopespa · 07/10/2026 17:19

I actually am tempted to buy that myself ...

Sulgari · 07/10/2026 17:20

I think the new dresses look quite dull, and make you look older. The jumpsuit is streets ahead

Calliopespa · 07/10/2026 17:21

Yes, don't change the length. The fact that it COULD be taken up if you were being boring is what adds drama.

The sleeves look great. That's the right size too... Really fits so beautifully through the body.

You must feel amazing in that?

I like the berry/burgundy dresses, but I did think she looked older in them.

I think in this teal she could honestly be in her twenties - not that that's the goal. But it showcases her figure in a subtle way.

Kaftanqween · 07/10/2026 17:24

The jumpsuit is the winner. Trust your instinct. You immediately felt great in it and you look incredible. It’s also a bit cooler and more fashionable than the dresses. The v neck looks great on you.

Crunchymum · 07/10/2026 17:25

Today's dresses - the teal one.

Overall the jumpsuit but it needs to be altered as it's just too long. Do you have the time / know a good seamstress?

These two are my favourites too.

I think it is only the trouser hems for the jumpsuit?

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 17:27

Can’t get photos to upload again now so… taking stock!
I’m really liking the teal Florere… I’ve never worn that colour before but I like it. I have the green to share with you too when I can get the photos to upload. I love the Me+Em jumpsuit too, really do, but have a slight hesitation with it being a bit alternative for the main wedding ‘do’, and it may look a bit dark in photos… ?
Thanks for your lovely feedback ☺️

Trying one at a time as upload proving tricksy. This is a slightly different style Florere… sleeves have tight fitting cuffs, fitting around the waist area is different…

Could you do the jumpsuit for the first bit?

I think the dress would be nice for the big "do" as well.

The teal colour means that they aren't both versions of mossy greens.

Nice but the teal wins?

You do suit a fluid dress though op.

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 17:35

Same dress. You can either wear the neckline closed with a slight keyhole opening, or open it up and sort of fold it back to create V neck…

I think that one looks more drab, less celebratory. The waist area isn't as distinctive or as flattering. but would still be a lovely addition to your wardrobe since we are intent on bankrupting you.

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 17:42

And finally, Florere in Green:

In that style of dress on you I prefer the teal. And the burgundy sleeves don’t look right with the buttons. It’s probably the photos and they are all lovely, which colour did you feel most comfortable in?

I agree the waist area is not as good. But it could be the angle of the photos.

And finally, Florere in Green:

Actually, I still love the green ...

The teal is my second favourite, and I could see the logic in choosing the teal if you went for the jumpsuit as well.

But that dress looks perfect on you imo.

Calliopespa · 07/10/2026 18:01

The style of the teal and of the green (which seems to be the same) is definitely the better style.

Sandunesandseashells · 07/10/2026 18:06

I would love the green Florere if I hadn’t already seen the teal. IMO, the burgundy dresses are too ‘cold’ against your skin tone to be flattering. So my votes go to the teal Florere and the green Me+Em jumpsuit. You look fantastic, it was a worthwhile journey!

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 18:30

Thanks all… I’m still valuing your feedback and haven’t made any final decisions yet… although am starting to put a few things back in their bags for returning! Have some stuff to do for a while so I’ll come back later and see if there’s a few more replies, rather than lead the witness with my thoughts. Still have three items on order that haven’t arrived yet as well! 😵‍💫🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Crunchymum · 07/10/2026 18:36

It's still jumpsuit and then teal for me (although I know nothing, it's just my personal preference on what I think looks best with your colouring)

Maybe as someone suggested you could do both? Jumpsuit for the less formal part?

I'm sure your future DIL has lots on but depending on your relationship and how well she knows (and likes) you, would she be able to advise?

I adore my MIL and would happily give her some feedback in this situation.

Clothing is about how you ‘feel’ in an outfit @ihaveafavouritecat

Do you have a sense of ‘this is the one, I feel amazing’ - in any of the ones you have tried on?

Iloveshihtzus · 07/10/2026 18:38

Wildgoat · 07/10/2026 16:51

The jumpsuit is beyond fantastic and really suits you, taking it up will be fine, it is the best of all of them. I’m hugely jealous, if I could justify it I’d buy it myself, but sadly no occasions to wear it too,

@Wildgoat I feel the same. Scratching my head as to what I have next year!

Iloveshihtzus · 07/10/2026 18:49

@ihaveafavouritecat the Florete is a beautiful dress and the best shape on you. I think I might need to buy that too!!

I can’t decode between the teal or green. I still rate it as
1 jumpsuit
2 either Florere dress

there is enough distinction between the styles. I would select the dress colour based on how you feel it looks in reality (we are hampered by photo lighting and not seeing it moving on you) and also how it complements your jumpsuit. I would also beg borrow or steal a faux fur jacket that matches both outfits. And I would wear the same shoes for both as no one will see them under the jumpsuit.
