Mother of the Groom in 8 weeks!

ihaveafavouritecat · 02/10/2026 11:29

Please help me! My son is getting married in 8 weeks and I haven’t a clue what to wear. So far I’ve ordered three dresses online (Coast, Lavish Alice and Florere) and have sent them all back. Earlier this week I had a personal stylist appointment at John Lewis, bought 3 items (Hobbs dress, Reiss dress and Phase Eight jumpsuit), but not sure any of them are right. Also ordered a jumpsuit from Me+Em, not yet received. I don’t know if that will be right either, I know it will need shortening about 6 inches!
I’m 5’3, 9st 6, have lost 7 stone over last 3 years. Blue eyes, brown hair/blond highlights. i think the colours that suit me best are greens/golds/sandy but not at all rigid except that pastel colours make me look washed out.
There’s a register office wedding service and then the bigger wedding ‘do’ 3 days later, so I need two outfits! Budget about £400ish for both. I just feel so much of what I’m seeing is so ‘bland’ and ordinary, I want to feel a bit more cool and funky but still smart of course.
Would really appreciate some help or suggestions of makers/brands I’m not aware of… thanks in advance.

I’ve just stumbled across this thread, and the Me and Em jumpsuit looks fabulous on you, you look confident in it too, as a pp said. You rock that look

Trickedbyadoughnut · 07/10/2026 10:41

I think the jumpsuit nails it stylewise, I think it is perfect for what you are looking for. Before altering though, which size did you order it in? I'm wondering if the size down wouldn't be better (length will almost certainly need altering still of course).

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 13:01

Rixo was recommended by PP very early on. I like this… it’s the same ‘silk velvet’ as the Me+Em jumpsuit which I now know feels fabulous. So so ££s though and probably down to the floor. Rixo dress
Anyway, in other news, 3 x Florere dresses and 1x Gina Bacconi dress have arrived. Also a message to say Evri have delivered (2 x Boden dresses I think) but no indication as to where. Probably some random neighbour’s recycling bin, I’ll have to go in search of it. Then I can do some trying on!

Thanks @Trickedbyadoughnut (great name!)
I ordered in an 8. Is it looking too big? I’ve only tried it on once so far, I’ll try again today. I could also go into the store and ask their advice. I know they don’t have it in stock though, as I called them to ask before ordering online. (Was trying to avoid overloading my credit card!)

Excited for today's mega try-on :)

TJH1 · 07/10/2026 15:19

The jumpsuit is lovely and suits you, I have really enjoyed this thread, loved looking at all of the suggestions and look forward to your next trying on session.

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 15:39

Get them tried on and post some pics 😁

Wildgoat · 07/10/2026 16:51

The jumpsuit is beyond fantastic and really suits you, taking it up will be fine, it is the best of all of them. I’m hugely jealous, if I could justify it I’d buy it myself, but sadly no occasions to wear it too,

Piglet89 · 07/10/2026 16:55

Can’t help with style - but I didn’t read your whole post and jumped straight to the pics and thought “that woman has the most amazing figure”.

Superb effort on the weight loss!

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 16:56

Loving the love for the jumpsuit - thank you @Wildgoat .
I’m ready to share pics of latest try-on but having trouble uploading the photos 😕

Oh thank you, @PassengerDerbythat’s so kind of you to say this. I’ve been prevaricating this evening over reordering that Florere dress… and trawling through the Karen Millen occasion dresses… Nice things, but so many sleeveless or one shoulder… They just don’t feel appropriate for my age. I’m finding it so hard to find the dress/outfit that sits in that sweet spot between a bit funky and different (but not ‘out there’), and smart but not safe/dull/boring/frumpy!
Feels a bit self indulgent seeking and receiving all this feedback, (I’ve never done it before!), so it’s great to be reminded that there are people who may be reading the thread and also valuing the discussion - because that’s usually me - reading Mumsnet daily but almost never posting anything.

The Florere dress is that dress OP!

Buy it before it sells out!

I also love the potential to use it more casually with boots and the idea of pairing it with a faux fur jacket.

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 17:01

Ok phone/Mumsnet not playing ball with letting me upload more than one pic at a time so I’ll keep it light on photos. Here’s the burgundy velvet from Boden…

what do we think - I think I love it - certainly feels fab quality, has a bit of a cool edge/bit different, will need taking up 4+ inches and will be without question, the most expensive item of clothing I’ve ever bought if I go for it 🙀 It meets my criteria for put it on and don’t have to think about it…

Oh that's lovely! Catching up ...

This was interesting. PP suggested asking Chat GPT for hair colour to suit soft autumn- and it gave me this! It’s not far from what I have now and yet it looks so good! Is this what some of you were trying to describe to me?

Yes, that was what I was trying to describe.

Calliopespa · 07/10/2026 17:06

ihaveafavouritecat · 06/10/2026 12:43

You mean this one? I liked the colours too. Most of the feedback I got was that it was hideous 😹
It’s just so weird and I’m annoying myself now really. I don’t need anything like this kind of feedback or help with buying casual wear. But honestly it’s still a complete headf**k (sorry if this offends!) when people say things like ‘you have a petite frame/tiny waist/you need to try the 8, the 10 is too loose’. It’s honestly a bit mind blowing and unreal. So this is a big part of why I don’t know what suits me… and then the other part is because it’s my son’s wedding. If it was just a friend’s party or whatever I’d be fine, one of these things I’ve tried would do just fine. I wouldn’t be going to be in loads of photos for a start! I’m so bloody thankful that I’m not going to be my former very overweight self in the photos, but still I’m struggling with what to wear. Who knew?!

I rather liked that, even though it isn't what I would have picked "on paper."

But it has a certain charm to it that I think works. Not my favourite any longer though ...

That's very nice, with a similar top half to the jumpsuit, but for me the length is just preventing it have any wow factor.

I like the fluidity of the jumpsuit and Florere.

Very nice. You look ten years older than in the jumpsuit but it fits nicely and is elegant.
It's proper Mother of the Bride though and I sense you want a bit of funk and flair?

ihaveafavouritecat · 07/10/2026 17:12

Florere dress in teal and a size 8 - I previously tried 10. Sleeves well pushed up, length maybe ok?!

That's beautiful.

I don't think the colour is flat: it has that gorgeous sheen of a good quality velvet.

I also don't think it is fitting wrongly or see any boob issues.

To be honest the Florere is going to have to work hard to beat that for me. I think it is really stunning. It looks the most expensive, yet at the same time the most relaxed AND the most stylish. Really, really like this, and agree with you you suit those mossy greens.

Love that on you.

Which is your favourite out of the three new ones OP?

it’s very hard to tell from the photos but this one looks nice (I said stay clear of Gina bacconi mob outfits). This could be nice for the register office then the trouser suit you like for the reception. It’s up to you.
