Mother of the Groom in 8 weeks!

1000 replies

ihaveafavouritecat · 02/10/2026 11:29

Please help me! My son is getting married in 8 weeks and I haven’t a clue what to wear. So far I’ve ordered three dresses online (Coast, Lavish Alice and Florere) and have sent them all back. Earlier this week I had a personal stylist appointment at John Lewis, bought 3 items (Hobbs dress, Reiss dress and Phase Eight jumpsuit), but not sure any of them are right. Also ordered a jumpsuit from Me+Em, not yet received. I don’t know if that will be right either, I know it will need shortening about 6 inches!
I’m 5’3, 9st 6, have lost 7 stone over last 3 years. Blue eyes, brown hair/blond highlights. i think the colours that suit me best are greens/golds/sandy but not at all rigid except that pastel colours make me look washed out.
There’s a register office wedding service and then the bigger wedding ‘do’ 3 days later, so I need two outfits! Budget about £400ish for both. I just feel so much of what I’m seeing is so ‘bland’ and ordinary, I want to feel a bit more cool and funky but still smart of course.
Would really appreciate some help or suggestions of makers/brands I’m not aware of… thanks in advance.

OP I'm just going to post a thought here and leave it. Feel free to completely ignore!

I agree with you about the Franciscan monk effect of the brown dress, but the "Kyoto" outfit you tried with it looked lovely.

Also, I really liked the green one you felt "swamped" in. (Long sleeves, full skirt) That is possibly my favourite. You look feminine, confident, attractive. It has movement and sass and style.

To me those are the two outfits on this thread that make you look the most stylish and chic.

There is a real tendency for women when "dressing up" to go in one of two directions: old ladyish and frumpy (knee to mid-calf length, nipped waist, patterns) or alternatively to start slashing shoulders, slits up skirts and tight as they can manage. Sometimes a combination, which is the "frumpy neat and tight." Not saying ANY of yours scream this, but those two dresses I mentioned avoid it completely IMO.

Both the looks (frump and vamp) are easy to buy because so many people still veer in both directions. But I genuinely don't think people look better in either - which is ironic as they are trying to look their very best.

I can understand with you that after huge weight loss, you are looking to show your figure, but both the Kyoto and long swishy green dress do so in a way that is stylish and contemporary and which look somehow "at ease" in yourself - which is ultimately the most stylish look of all. Ironically, I think you didn't feel at ease! So that means at the moment they are not a great choice. But I am just leaving the thought here. You could maybe try the Kyoto in a size down? But to me the cuts had something more to them design-wise than most of the other outfits. They looked as though there was a designer, not a dressmaker, behind them, if that makes sense (thinking dressmakers approach with a kind of "I can take it in a bit more here" attitude, rather than an appreciation for the overall flow and drape and design). You don't need nipped and clingy to look petite. To me a woman looks far more self-assured and elegant when she isn't needing all that.

Both those outfits had a certain verve. But that's my opinion and may not be yours.

I really like green ‘Lana’ dress you’ve shared here, that’s exactly the shade of (sludge) green I like. But pretty well all the sizes have gone already! I could see that looking good with chunky gold jewellery and maybe ?gold shoes and bag? But I’m not sure it’ll become available again. What do you savvy S+B experts do in this situation? Monitor the website daily? Try contacting the shops direct? I’ve already signed up to be notified. Do you think this would be smart enough for the main wedding ‘do’?

That's a gorgeous dress and definitely smart enough for the wedding. As you suggested, it would look fab with gold accessories.
Keep checking Vinted. There's a larger size already listed on there so more may pop up.

If you go into the actual link for the dress on the NC website, click the size you need and add your email, you'll be notified if any come back in stock.

This is so great @Calliopespa, thank you for thinking about me and then sharing your thoughts… God this S+B support is so brilliant, thank you all! That green dress
was the very first thing I ordered when I started looking for something to wear for the wedding. I loved the colour, the flow-y-ness, it really looked good and very ‘me’… but yes, when I tried it on I felt swamped, sleeves too full and too long (but I could alter those tbh)… and the length - I’d need it taking up 6 inches wouldn’t I? I wonder if I could have gone a size smaller too? gorgeous green dressgreen dress
Maybe I should order it again?! I could wear it with boots too and I think I’d feel more ‘me’ in boots as well! Omg all those words you’ve used like stylish, contemporary, chic - I want this!! lol.

Hi OP I don’t have any fashion advice but I just wanted to say how well you’re doing at taking on board all this advice. Even though some of it is rather direct!

I am just a few years younger than you and I’m also reinventing myself, in my case after a divorce rather than a large weight loss ( though I guess you could say I’ve lost 16 stone of useless man).

Like you, I think I’ve got a reasonably contemporary everyday style - the barrel jeans/trainers/ boots /leather jacket look. But I’d be terrified to have to find formal wear , especially for such an important occasion. I completely understand that you want to look good for your son as well as for yourself.

I've enjoyed looking at all the links here, I think I was very stuck on what middle aged women wore to weddings the last time I attended a few, which was probably 15 years ago! And of course 65 is the new 45 😬

I have one suggestion about your colouring. It does sound like you’re a soft autumn, if you’re drawn to all these sludgy greens, golds, warms reds and blues.

Which definitely means that your hair colour is wrong - it’s far too cool, more suitable for a summer. One thing you can do is take some photos and upload them to ChatGPT and ask it to change your hairstyle and colouring to a a soft autumn.

I think that you are drawn to “ buttery highlights “ because you know that your hair is too cool. But it might be your low light that needs changed , not your highlights. And you might need more contrast rather than thicker highlights . But a good hairdresser will advise. They should be happy to book you in for a consultation first, before you commit to any changes.

As Pp have said , the style needs tweaked. Not a total change, just an update.

You can do the same chat GPT trick with make-up, as that will be off now too. It will either be too cool if it’s ok with your hair or clash with it , if it’s ok with your skin tone.

You don’t need a whole lot of expensive make up, whatever anyone tells you. Just the right colours in any high street brand, like boots / Maybelline / revlon. For me, having the right colour of eyebrows, eye liner and lipstick totally transforms me.

Im a summer and my daughter is a soft autumn . If we try each others lipsticks. it looks horrible, it’s an instant “ oh no thats terrible “. Even with colours that look very similar in the tube. It’s quite startling. My beautiful 20 something DD looks like she’s ill in my colours 😮.

Are your earrings and necklace gold or silver ? Good is usually best for warm season women.

Thanks so much @TR0LLING I’ve been feeling like I could do with a daughter right now (I have two sons), to give me honest hair, clothes and make up advice - and to go shopping with me! But you S+B guys are helping so much, I’m very happy to have all the feedback!
yes I always go for gold jewellery, but will need to think more about hair colour and definitely make up… but that’s a whole other can of worms for me as I’ve not really taken much interest in all that really either! Glad to hear you feel the high street brands will be fine because I’m not about to start spending a fortune on that as well 😵‍💫

I love the Florere dress and it could easily be altered - the sleeves look like an elasticated cuff, so that’s an easy fix, so many sleeves are too long now and it makes everything then look too big all over. I think boots would make it too casual, great for if you wear it again though.
The other thing I think is that styling, including hair and make up, can dramatically change the look of an outfit, it’s so hard when you’re trying a dress on without shoes and your other accessories - it’s clearly why when wedding dresses are tried on they style the bride with shoes, headdress, etc. It’s the accessories that will take your dress from being okay and everyday to feeling like a special MOTG.

Haha thanks @minnowonthesay I clearly have much to learn, late in life, about taking this fashion business more seriously, and not trying on grown up outfits in my socks 🤣

It is just such understated elegance, doesn't look too "trying" and yes, you could wear with boots!

Maybe try the size down...?

Can't wait to see you in the latest selection, @ihaveafavouritecat.
Take a look at the orange Victoria Beckham dress posted by @Octoberismyfave just above. This is the kind of shape that is current at the moment - note the more architectural sleeve. The more "neat" dresses (knee-length) look a bit more dated.
Sometimes it is good to look at REALLY expensive dresses (the VB dress was originally nearly 900GBP) not to buy them, but to learn what is at the forefront of fashion. You clearly want to look current, with your barrel leg jeans selection, for example, so it is good to look. It is fun too.

Here’s some of the things I’ve tried/bought and might return:
Reiss dress - brown, boring, too long?, red Hobbs dress - very comfy, is it smart enough?, teal Phase Eight jumpsuit - bit boring/twee?, two piece dress+ jacket bought on Vinted - love the colours, John Lewis stylist said it was ‘a bit old fashioned’?, last floral one I tried on yesterday in a boutique - my friend loved it, just don’t know!

The red dress with pleated skirt is beautiful! Dressed up with heels/nails/make up/fascinator be beautiful
