My DD has asked for a choker necklace like this pic. I've found a couple of very cheap ones but does anyone know where I can get one that's made of proper gold?

unfortunately this has been my experience too. They look beautiful in the pics but ime the quality isn’t that much different from the much cheaper stuff that appears around this time of year in tkmaxx.
Swarovski on the other hand I have always found to be great , the gems sparkle brilliantly.

I agree that Monica Vinader is really poor quality. The Amelia Rose one is very pretty!

My daughter has something very similar, I love that style.

I sell vintage and antique jewellery as a side hustle so just wanted to give my 2 cents worth. 9ct gold is currently £40 a gram. So you will really struggle to find solid gold and brand new for £200 as a necklace because they naturally tend to weigh more.

I would be careful of Monica vinader, missoma and other “luxury” brands that sell ridiculously overpriced gold plated jewellery. Vermeil is just gold plate even if it sounds fancier. It will tarnish and won’t last and frankly they are ripping you off.

Were I you, I’d buy her the costume jewellery one she has asked for and then get her a separate piece of solid gold jewellery as a keepsake. You might be able to get her a sweet vintage ring if you shop second hand on eBay. Just make sure that whatever you buy is fully hallmarked and there are pictures of the marks in the listing.

I am frequently amazed (not in a good way) at the prices Monica Vinader charges! The power of viral marketing is immense.

If you do decide to DIY, take a look at Cooksongold for the base chain. They are very popular suppliers for artisan makers but also sell to the general public.
