Shiny new thread just in time for the new season - I'm thinking smoky, spicy gourmands as we head through autumn.

Old thread here

Hello, I've been a dip-in-and-out lurker for some time now trying to learn all things scent but wanted to say a proper hello and finally join the chat if that's ok.
SOTD is the OJ suede silhouette from the SFAC that I managed to get.
I really only knew the Ex Nihilo one in it and bought the calendar on the strength of that hoping some others in there might be in a similar vein.
So far I've tried Bibbi last mango -hmm not sure about this but will see.
Todays OJ one opened in a weird on me way but has settled into something very soft and I think I am going to enjoy it. I don't understand the notes yet but always enjoy when the more knowledgeable here break scents down.
Anyway, thanks for all the helpful notes and chat and hello from me!!

Ds durga I don't know what... this is one of those skin scents that I can barely see the point of but I got it free so....

Musky, salty subtleness

Also thought I'd give JHAG purple trouble another go. It goes on weird, sour almost but then the blackcurrant comes through. Its an intriguing, challenging scent. Blind buy, don't regret it exactly but not a favourite.

It reminds me of a perfume from my teenager years

82blue · 21/10/2026 10:57

Floraiku GONG for me today

I'm not a big citrus fan but i love this, a vanilla orange. The opening is a great citrus burst and dries down to the vanilla/amber orange scent.

I liked Sand and Skin from last years Harrods calendar, this was a new brand for me and I'm enjoying discovering more from it.

IDontHateRainbows · 21/10/2026 12:43

Tried the demon dancer from liberty kit. This reminds me of blue talisman but fruitier, peachier. They are similar but think prefer this. More testing to come...

SOTM Tana Meadow, as I was in a rush and it was to hand. I've been wearing it all week - I do love it for autumn, but really felt like a change.

As an aside, I was searching for something earlier when I came across a 50ml bottle of Chanel No5 parfum, still in its box. It was given to me a few years ago and I completely forgot I had it.

Maybe I'll dab a bit this evening, just to see. It's not my usual thing at all, which is probably why it had to be unearthed!

MiaN · 21/10/2026 12:49

I like Gong but I find it really strong, and as I normally wear lighter perfumes I have to limit myself to 3 spays max. It lasts great too! My favourite of the brand is One Umbrella for Two.

Another delivery today from company I have not shopped before. I bought one niche perfume that was on offer. They have send me freebies - 6 perfume samples such as Ella K Musk K, Chlive Christian - all hight end and 3 beauty samples - shampoo, natura bisse serum and cream sachet. And the perfume is definitely new.

Ok, ok I will move on. I won't keep going about it.

I also managed to secure everything I wanted from Liberty Kit, which great for me as by the time I order the kit, have it delivered to Ireland and deal with everything I don't want - the joy is gone. Now I can look forward trying only what I have strong feeling I am going to like.

MotherWol · 21/10/2026 13:00

@IDontHateRainbows try I Don’t Know What layered with a sweet or clean scent - I’ve found that makes them woodier and deeper.

DH asked if I had any autumnal scents he could borrow so I lent him Bois Corsé and it smells better on him than me. Damn!

demantoid · 21/10/2026 13:07

I'm still deciding whether to order the fragrance edit and a couple of other kits instead of the BAC. I love Albis Santa Eulalia, I'm curious about Morning Chess and Ghost of Tom, but somewhat hmmm at Fugazzi Purple turning up again.

I wasn't bowled over by the fragrance edit at first, but I keep being drawn back to it. I think it's a better one that I initially gave it credit for.

HolidayHattie · 21/10/2026 13:16

I think because Fugazzi Purple is a Liberty exclusive, they are going to include it in every edit. I'm only surprised they went with Angel Dust in the advent.

I ordered the fragrance edit and it's been dispatched but not here yet.

IDontHateRainbows · 21/10/2026 13:53

Yes I think they made tons of the purples and now we will see them in every scent kit!!

I got my kit today and I like it so far, so fence sitters I recommend you try it.

Its funny you said that. As the day went on i was thinking to myself that the reason i like most of the scents in the calendar is because they are strong! I have heard about One Umbrella for Two, i need to go the shops and try it on, thanks for the recommendation.

I feel the same about the OJ. It's quite leathery when first sprayed. Reminds me of Tom Ford Ombre Leather my son loves. Like you say it then settles into something sweeter with a hint of leather. I love it once it's dried down.

Big surprise for me- I decided to try the Patchouli Gourmand expecting to find it cloyingly sweet but I absolutely love it!! A huge surprise. Now I can’t wait to try some of the other outliers 🤞

Middlemarch123 · 21/10/2026 20:35

Chanel No5. I just love it. I’m lucky because now it smells nice on me, it never used to, so I stopped using it. Tried a tester yesterday, smelt gorgeous, DD agreed. Bought a small bottle. So happy I can finally wear it.

Love that one too. I wasn't sure at first when I tested it in store but after wearing for a few hours it's gorgeous.

demantoid · 21/10/2026 21:01

That's a nice Chanel No5 journey, Middlemarch. I wonder if I'm similar - my mum used it in the 80's (along with Cinnabar and Opium natch Grin), and it always seemed so grown-up and - I know this is a terrible word to use in the fragrance community - 'perfumey.'

I completely forgot I was going to try it as my SOTE. I'll try to remember tomorrow, I'm hoping for a similar epiphany now!

demantoid · 21/10/2026 22:37

I keep seeing the Ffern ads for the autumn release. Is anyone on the ledger? It's not calling to me in the same way that last year's autumn and winter releases did - I ended up with both and love them.

MiaN · 22/10/2026 05:33

I might do a full-day wear test of Soie Malaquais today while working from home.

I wish all samples came in 3ml sizes! It’s great to be able to try so many perfumes through the Skins, but while 1.5ml is usually enough to tell me when I don’t like something, it often isn’t enough to get to know a fragrance properly and decide whether I actually want to own it. Even 2ml would be better.

Absolutely agree with this, I don't find 1.5ml enough either.

MiaN · 22/10/2026 06:26

I had another sniff of Vanilla Blush L'Atelier Parfum and I am not ready to decide it's a no yet. Maybe this one will be a keeper from the skins box.

I agree. if I find a scent that I like I'll spray again instore or ask for another sample. I absolutely hate it though when fragrances only come in 100ml bottles. Thats why I love advents and fragrance kits. Its ideal to have 7.5 to 10ml bottles.

I received the new Skins box. I really like the Widian Black II. Not sure about the Metal Lavender from Matiere Premiere. There is an undertone that I smell with all perfumes with this house and its rather strong in the MP. Abel Miami Split. Oh dear god, no this one isnt for me. Fugazzi Pommegranoudh is ok. Wish it smelled more Pommegrade then Oud. I find it to smell a bit heavy in the spice/ burned wood department. Going to test some others today.

I love the Sapin candle from Diptique. Too bad its such a tiny one but a freebee is a freebee.

MiaN · 22/10/2026 06:31

can you describe me the widian - what is it like? Does the voucher go towards any perfume purchase or only those included in the box?

CorneliaStreet · 22/10/2026 07:11

My logical head tells me that travel sizes are better because I have so much perfume, but I much prefer actually using full size bottles, they feel so much nicer in your hands.

I’m wearing my beloved Miller Harris Secret Gardenia today. Very much a spring and autumn scent for me.

MiaN · 22/10/2026 07:27

I really like travel sizes, and ideally, I should use one up before buying the full bottle. However, I also see them as a way of testing a fragrance, hoping I’ll fall in love with it enough to want the full size. I don’t seem to think of a travel size as actually owning the perfume, but rather as still testing it. I probably need to set some limits on full bottles over 50ml, too, as I already have so many!

But my full bottles of 30ml or more are the core of my collection.
