What to wear on a first date after years away from dating

First date in 6 years with Men, forgot about what was dating like, lol.

What would be good to wear for the first date?

Do you usually shave down there?

Hi

Good luck with the date, I dated a few frogs I certainly wouldn't have wanted sex with before I found a found a prince.

Wear something you feel great in🤣, it'll give you the confidence to say no thank you or wtaf if it's not going well..

Remember he should be grateful you are dating him, not you being grateful he's meeting you.
You are worth more than first date sex, but that is your choice.

Have fun. Enjoy

What do you mean 'worth more than first date sex'?

I think this is a completely justified question!

When I was first 'dating' (I am now 48 - and been married a long time) some people shaved, and some didn't. I would have no idea what the expectations are nowadays! I don't feel you should feel bad asking the question - isn't that what Mumsnet is for. Asking the questions you would be embarrassed to ask anyone else?!

But, personally, I would just do what you normally do to feel comforable and attractive (I would only trim 😉). Just in case....

Good luck!

Whose expectations? What an odd comment. Shave if you want, don't shave if you don't want to. I've never shaved and absolutely would not do so because of a man's expectations.

I would go for something fairly loose fitting and comfortable if you’re going for a meal, maybe a floaty dress? Nothing worse than feeling full and having a tight waistband! As for shaving, yes I’d go clean shaven just in case, men do appreciate a woman that is well groomed and takes care of her appearance.

Ugh.

Eyesopenwideawake · 22/08/2026 12:51

Absolutely have sex on the first date. If he's shit in bed you've saved time by not having a second date.

Why on earth would you shave? Any man who is put off by a woman's normal pubic hair is a waste of space.

Surely it’s just down to personal preference? DP and I both dislike pubic hair on ourselves and on each other, so we had it all lasered off some years ago, but I wouldn’t jump to making judgements about someone else’s choices.

BillieWiper · 22/08/2026 17:07

If I was planning on sex I'd shave down below yeah. But otherwise I'd just be au naturel as nobody's going to be seeing or touching it?!

I'd wear something that makes me feel confident and attractive but nothing uncomfortable. No brand new shoes that'll distract you if they pinch. And nothing that fits but is probably a size too small. And not too much makeup.

Would your husband have rejected you had you been unshaven the first time you had sex?

I have no idea tbh, I haven’t been unshaven for some 25 years or more. I just presumed that is the customary norm?

I don't think it's the customary norm. It's not uncommon, but I don't think it's the default for most women.

Well I guess it’s each to their own isn’t it? I mean, if an unkempt shaggy bush and hairy legs and armpits are your thing then sure, crack on.

Yes, it is each to their own - absolutely.

But that's not what you said - you advised the OP to go clean-shaven as men appreciate it?! All men?? As that's what you imply - along with suggesting that having pubic hair is "unkempt" ...

Men are not some homogeneous mass, with identikit preferences as to what a woman's pubic hair should look like (not that it matters anyway). Just as women have individual preferences on what they do with their own bodies!!!

(If you want to shave or wax it all off, totally fine. If you want to leave it all untouched, that's just fine too. IMO most women aim for some sort of happy medium.)

Why on earth would you presume it's the norm? Some of my female friends (who range from 30s to 70s) remove the lot on occasion - the majority don't, they trim &/or wax to varying degrees. Pubic hair is not a defect!

The heyday for full removal of body hair was probably around the time you had it all lasered off - around about 2000. Younger women in particular do not consider their pubic hair to be a beauty flaw, & are rejecting wholesale removal.

The bush is well & truly back - & has been for some time actually. But if you're now feeling unfashionable, Skims sells merkins ...!!!

Ask Ugly: the state of the bush – how should I be styling my pubic hair?

I polled thousands of women about their pubic hair. This is what they told me

Neither would I, and I have never had sex on a first, second or third date either.
My reasoning is I don't want sex with a hit and run man, I would feel I had been used.
If other women feel different, that's their choice.

SocksAndTheCity · Yesterday 01:28

Of course it is. I've had sex with a fair few I wasn't that keen on just to see if they had any redeeming features, and some of it was pretty good. I'm sure they felt much the same way.

And my bush is not 'unkempt', it is springy and ginger and fabulous Smile

Well perhaps I should have said it is the customary norm in my experience. DP and I are naturists so we see more than our fair share of naked bodies, and pubic hair is something we don’t regularly see. It could possibly be though that naturists are more predisposed to being bare, I’m not sure. Anyway, each to their own of course.

Surprised over all the negative comments about sex on the first date but it’s entirely up to you. Just wear something you are comfortable and confident in!

as for shaving down their, that’s never really been my thing. I did it once about 5 years ago for a holiday and it was horrible I hated how prickly and bumpy it was so now I just leave it and have never had any complaints!

Meeting someone next week for a first date of what (hopefully) will be athletic sex and his view was 'anything but stubble'.

This is however not a scientific study 🤣

You have discussed your pubic hair with a man you are yet to date?
Romance is alive and well.😆
