What to wear on a first date after years away from dating

YourCosyPino · 19/08/2026 17:11

First date in 6 years with Men, forgot about what was dating like, lol.

What would be good to wear for the first date?

Do you usually shave down there?

Very odd post, or am I just old lol

Nope. It IS an odd post - I suspect because it's someone trying to get their sad little kicks by asking women about how they shave their pubic hair.

EBearhug · 20/08/2026 01:46

I imagine most people use a razor.

Nothing wrong with first date sex, if that's what you want. I'm seeing a man on Friday who started with first date sex three years ago - and i hadn't met him at a sports club or anything previously.

Wear something you feel comfortable in, a nice dress. If you feel comfortable and relaxed, the whole evening will be easier to deal with.

Sure Jan.

Dare you to wear a wedding dress

I had sex with my DH on our first date 🤷‍♀️

Yep, such a shame to see women spouting on about respect.
I have personally had sex on many first dates and didn't lose respect for myself.
Such ingrained misogyny

Yupstillhere · 20/08/2026 09:18

Why would you worry about what other women shave in the shower, it's never crossed my mind to worry about that. You do what you want. A very odd question.

JokersToTheLeftOfMeClownsToTheRight · 20/08/2026 10:18

I think this is a completely justified question!

When I was first 'dating' (I am now 48 - and been married a long time) some people shaved, and some didn't. I would have no idea what the expectations are nowadays! I don't feel you should feel bad asking the question - isn't that what Mumsnet is for. Asking the questions you would be embarrassed to ask anyone else?!

But, personally, I would just do what you normally do to feel comforable and attractive (I would only trim 😉). Just in case....

Good luck!

RelaxAndDetox · 20/08/2026 11:06

"Do you usually shave down there?"

Are you wearing something that shows off 'down there'?

Or planning on sex (which is up to you no judgement)

Do whatever feels good for you. Wear whatever you feel comfortable and nice in.

Delphiniumandlupins · 20/08/2026 11:13

I think if you shave, down there, you will have to carry on shaving for as long as the relationship lasts. I've never shaved completely because a) I'm old b) I hate the itch as anything shaved grows back c) I think adult humans have hair on their bodies. Do people who don't respect women who have sex on a first date feel the same way about men?

Stepsisterfromhell · 20/08/2026 11:24

Gettingbysomehow · 19/08/2026 17:23

Dont have sex on a first date. You wont see him again and he'll have zero respect for you.
I never go for a meal on the first date. It is horrible if you dislike him instantly and you have to sit there and eat a whole meal with someone you hate and have no intention of seeing again.
I either go for coffee or for a drink. I dont drink alcohol so less likely to do anything I'll regret.

I had sex with my a man on a first date, he later became my husband.

Playing padel on a first date, especially before you eat, is totally crazy! Whose idea was that?!

Better idea than after eating surely?

Illicililly · 20/08/2026 15:54

Wear something comfortable but not scruffy. Don’t worry about your public hair, this is a first date FFS.

Jeeze, some of these are harsh! If you want to have sex on the first date then do it, it’s actually quite common to do so, some relationships are successful and some aren’t, but that’s also the case whether sex is involved or not. Also, whether I was planning to do the deed or not, I would always shave/wax, it makes me feel better in myself for personal reasons. You said you haven’t been on a date for years, go have sex if you like and don’t feel embarrassed for doing so❤️ I hope you get the outcome to want from this date🫶🏼

toiletpaperthief · 20/08/2026 21:16

What to wear depends on what type of place are you having the meal, fancy restaurant? dress fancy, local Burger joint? chinos and a flattering t shirt is fine. As per the "grooming" thing, just ask him if he likes afro bush, landing strip or barbie look 😂(just kidding)

I think trimming would be enough, just keep it clean and tidy..you should be able to get small grooming scissors if you don't have any.
I usually just shave any unsightly leg and thigh hair but I'm like a gorilla..don't forget to pluck your chin, unibrow and tache.
A casual but comfortable nice dress and maybe leggings if it's cool at night.. Like a skater dress might be a good option.
Or jeans and a nice top.

Myli1 · 21/08/2026 20:20

I would go for something fairly loose fitting and comfortable if you’re going for a meal, maybe a floaty dress? Nothing worse than feeling full and having a tight waistband! As for shaving, yes I’d go clean shaven just in case, men do appreciate a woman that is well groomed and takes care of her appearance.

"I’d go clean shaven just in case, men do appreciate a woman that is well groomed and takes care of her appearance" 😮

Is this for real? In 2026, you'd actually want to date a man who found pubic hair a turn-off ...???!!

I thought we were long past the 1950s recommendation that a woman always reapplied her lipstick before her husband came home ... but no, it's even worse! To be well-groomed, show she takes care of her appearance (&, I assume, is "worthy" of a fuck), she has to remove all her pubic hair ...?!!

Well I guess it’s each to their own isn’t it? I mean, if an unkempt shaggy bush and hairy legs and armpits are your thing then sure, crack on.

EstherGreenwood63 · 22/08/2026 08:49

Oh outfit help laydeez....oh do you shave your minge? 🥱

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/08/2026 08:54

I groom with a Wilkinsons Sword trimmer, have some Veet bikini cream for more and recently had a standard bikini wax but it was badly done!

I used to go the whole hog, Brazilian, Hollywood and standard bikini wax until I got a nasty ingrowing hair spot. Plus you need to do maintenance trips. My boyfriend would love for it to be all off but that ain’t gonna happen. I just trim it nicely. As he does with his.

Good luck with your date OP. I’ve never played padel!

Are you trying to imply the OP is a man? Just report the post if you’re concerned.

Coinkidinki · 22/08/2026 08:59

Why on earth would you shave? Any man who is put off by a woman's normal pubic hair is a waste of space.

Hi

Good luck with the date, I dated a few frogs I certainly wouldn't have wanted sex with before I found a found a prince.

Wear something you feel great in🤣, it'll give you the confidence to say no thank you or wtaf if it's not going well..

Remember he should be grateful you are dating him, not you being grateful he's meeting you.
You are worth more than first date sex, but that is your choice.

Have fun. Enjoy
