Wedding attire - is this ok?

Hi, I have never been great at clothes. I often seem to get things slightly wrong. I am 56, 5' 6 and a size 18 currently (bloody menopause). We are going to a wedding in a two weeks time (family member) and the invite says "Dress to Impress". I am not that confident in myself at this weight but I do care what I look like.

I have ordered this dress:

And these shoes:

https://airandgracelondon.com/collections/flat-shoes/products/anais-olive-suede-and-gold-leather-pointed-t-bar-flats

I intend to wear a double-layered gold necklace (Mint Velvet) and have ordered a suede olive green clutch bag. I can no longer wear heels so shoes need to be flats.

Can anyone with advise me if they think this is a good combination.

Thanks!

Love it! I do object to people decreeing stuff like "dress to impress", though...there are people who just can't afford it. Still, each to her own.

Lemonymint · 08/08/2026 02:52

I think the dress and shoes look lovely together. Lots of outfits posted on here don't but these do. I don't think it could be described as a predominantly white dress or remotely bridal.

Gorgeous op!
Huge thumbs up!!

(edited because my phone put the word ‘hi’ in😅)

Another one who loves it, great choice, you will look fabulous. Have a great day.

I love the dress and like the shoes but I don't think the shoes go well with the dress as they are the wrong sort of green. They need to be a brighter green and not olive. As a by-the-way I also have plantar fasciitis and have found remarkably good and quick results using this little device https://plantarcure.com. It's early days but if the improvement continues I hope to be free of the condition soon.

Great outfit. I would wear a daintier single gold necklace as the neckline and dress is quite fussy/bold.
Shoes are fab, and I agree about low block heels, they can look frumpy and throw the outfit off if they aren’t exactly right so flats or maybe a kitten are usually a better choice if not wearing an actual heel

The bag has arrived and looks like it’s going to be virtually same colour as the shoes.

Both lovely and not at all bridal Op. You have great taste.

The green in the dress is not bright green so the shoes will go really well with it

I think it's a beautiful outfit, but see how the length looks when it's on. You may find that having it shortened slightly makes you look taller, especially as you can't wear heels. Ballerina length on a model is often too long for us smaller rounder women.

She’s 5’ 6”. That’s not small!

JaneJeffer · 08/08/2026 15:55

It’s a lovely dress!

LlynTegid · 08/08/2026 15:57

Like it, hope it is a lovely day.

Compared to most clothes models, she is, as are most women. When you check the small print of those brands that actually tell you the height and size of the model in their photos, they are ridiculous, anything up to 6 ft tall and a tiny size. Wearing a longer skirt with flat heels can make you look shorter.

You are right, it’s not bright green - hard to see on my phone - but it seems to be a strong dark green, so still not olive…

Jan24680 · 08/08/2026 20:10

Dress is lovely. Might be worth trying out a different belt. Make it a bit more dressy.

But in this case she's taller than the model (who is the designer and 5ft 4).

The dress is modelled by Katya Wildman who is 5' 4"- two inches shorter than the OP.

And aside from that generally this idea that "only a 6:' model could wear...." which is trotted out for so many things is. is just silly.

VividDeer · 08/08/2026 20:29

Love the dress.
I'm like you, difficult feet and shoes must be comfy. People don't stare at your feet anyway.
I like the shoes, but don't love them with the dress.

ValcoServesYOuRight · 08/08/2026 22:21

Love Katya Wildman dresses but personally I’d not wear a white based dress, pick one of the other colours.
I work in weddings and I hear the bitchy comments when someone wears a white based dress.

Williteverrainagain · 10/08/2026 13:33

I haven’t blow dried my hair so excuse that and the shoes have not arrived. But this is the dress on me. With the bag.

These shoes are beautiful.

I see so many (very smart) women wearing trainers nowadays, which is great. There was a mature woman (not a teenager) at a very fancy wedding just this weekend, in a long and smart green and gold dresses, with matching green trainers. She looked beautiful

The shoes are fabulous. I don't agree you need "a heel" to smarten anything.

JaneJeffer · 10/08/2026 14:29

It’s lovely on you but I think you need to open the neckline up a bit like they showed on your first picture.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/08/2026 14:34

The shoes are fabulous! Dress is gorgeous.
