Who was your favourite style inspiration of all time?

From any point in history, really, including now. Pictures welcome!
I particularly loved the 90's relaxed and fluid styles, not too baggy or wide but still comfortable - strappy dresses for summer, only slightly fitted with a nice drape, or the more indie styles with 501's and boots.

I love most of what Helen Baxendale wore during that period, and have always like the author Rebecca Solnit's older styles... also Harriet Wheeler from the band The Sundays. Maybe not the most exciting examples but I'm not a exciting person Grin

Would love to hear yours!

Joan Jett is my style inspiration but Rogue from X Men inspired me to accept my flaws.

I will never tire of looking at Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex & The City. The outfits were truly spectacular - whether you loved or hated them - and she wore everything so beautifully. They had a fabulous stylist on the show who was endlessly inventive, and it was a treat to see every new outfit

Sadly I don't have the budget for designer gear, and can't walk in heels so live in trainers! But I do enjoy a print clash, and love putting an 'outfit' together rather than just throwing on random clothes

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw

I would have sold several internal organs for her hair!

Season 5 hair was a dream

In terms of biggest influence on my style 90s rave culture & 90s Kate Moss.

I do like SJP too

And I love that 90s American preppy look particularly on men.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/07/2026 16:58

Stevie Nicks. Floaty, flowery, black, lacy .... the layered jewellery, scarves and shawls.

Farah Fawcett. That blond, tanned, california look. She was so beautifully natural looking.

Floisme · 29/07/2026 17:00

Emma Peel and Lady Penelope.

Sorry, I know that's two. I have more if you want them.

PetulaGordeno · 29/07/2026 17:03

Sophia Loren as I had boobs and a bum. I can remember when Pamela Anderson came out and there was a trend to have huge fake boobs on a tiny, tanned body. So I was the complete opposite.
When JLo arrived I thought…. at last.

She was just magnificent. I don’t think we have a trend now where a singular hairstyle takes over, but the FF did and for over a decade.
Jaclyn Smith was also lovely but FF was just gorgeous.

I failed miserably to do a Farah Flick with my Carmen Rollers!
Love your username, now thinking about Peter Gordino in his tight flares and shirt slashed to rhe waist...

AbigailsKaftan · 29/07/2026 17:14

As per my username, I have always been drawn to women wearing exotic ( in my mind) voluptuous dresses or kaftans, so…
Penelope Keith (Margo)
Jane Seymour ( Live and let die)
Princess Margaret ( Mustique vibe)
Joan Collins ( South of France vibe).
I am actually a lot younger than I sound.

GrandmaMazur · 29/07/2026 17:15

An old one but I always thought Lauren Bacall was so stylish.

I’ve consistently admired Jennifer Aniston’s style, she always looks good but never over the top and although I dislike several of her hairstyles in Friends ‘the Rachel’ was as era-defining as the Farrah Flick.

Lottapianos · 29/07/2026 17:27

'Penelope Keith (Margo)'

Absolutely gorgeous. I was a very tall gangly kid and I loved watching Penelope Keith and Frances de la Tour because they were tall too but also elegant and sophisticated!

Ooh yes! Also Liz Taylor

Laloubaloo · 29/07/2026 19:32

SJP as Carrie and Rachel in Friends. I am a 90s comer of ager can you tell?!

I also enjoy Claudia Winkleman's style but it is less wearable and more gimmicky.

purungpurung · 29/07/2026 20:11

Katherine Hepburn looked effortlessly put together in her trousers/shirt or suit combo and loafers. Always admired that look, although I’m too dumpy to wear it.

I always wanted to look like Kate Moss, but have never been able to as I have always had boobs 🫣 I still yearn for a slender shape though and try to follow people with similar shapes to me - ‘styling with Rebecca’ on Instagram has my sort of shape although I don’t like everything she chooses. She does a lot of jeans though and so I find those looks more interesting.

My sister always looks great and very ‘herself’ in whatever she’s wearing, so much that I always want to wear it too. She’s one of those people who look so well put together that you immediately feel all wrong in whatever you chose to wear- especially if it’s an ordinary outfit. She wears things which just make ordinary seem special without being in any way OTT.

LancashireButterPie · 29/07/2026 21:41

Michelle Obama, love her casual preppiness.

emuloc · 29/07/2026 21:49

Dorothy Dandridge, and of course Jackie Onassis.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 29/07/2026 22:10

Margot Leadbetter

Michelle Obama, love her casual preppiness.

She also loves sparkles and rhinestones and long gold nails 😁 she's a fabulous dresser who always looks comfortable in what she's wearing

Edelweiss129 · 30/07/2026 11:03

I actually love Ivanka Trump's clothes. She has exactly the same style as me, before I got post-partum belly and can't wear a lot of that stuff. I sew and I get a lot of inspiration seeing her outfit pics

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2026 11:51

Tricia Guild. Love her look love her Tuscan house (though not the most recent one), love her London house. She looks absolutely amazing for her age. I’ve also loved Diane Keaton’s style.
