Indian wedding help

Am going to a British/Indian wedding later this summer. Actual wedding in church, all straightforward. Party the night before with Indian food and dancing. The Indian women will be in lehengas. Dress code is very open so I don’t have to look for a lehenga, though I am open to the idea. I definitely want something bright and fun. Happy to look at Vinted etc, but wondering if anyone has ideas.

I’m 5’4 and a size 18-20. Would rather not have lots of midriff showing, but a sliver is okay.

Bit of a tangent but thanks to this link, I've ordered a few lovely tops - Next have really upped their game since the last time I looked!

The Love and Roses dress arrived and is perfect! It’s heavier cotton than I was expecting, and longer on me, so as a whole it looks much smarter and definitely not beachy. I am waiting for the Maya dress, and potentially will wear one for the jaggo and one for the church, but I do have another alternative for the church, so we’ll see. This one is staying, no matter what!

I've been watching your thread to see what you thought when the dress turned up, because I think it's gorgeous and I've recommended it on a couple of threads despite never having seen it in real life! So I'm delighted to know it's good. If I could possibly find a sliver of an excuse I'd be buying it for myself but a) no events to wear it to and b) I really really really don't need any new clothes c) I really really really need to throw out about three sack fulls of clothes before I can possibly justify a new dress! 😂

Requires pins in 3 places too. One to hold the pleats in place, one to stop the lot coming undone - so through the sari and the petticoat beneath - one to the shoulder. Traditionally these would be brooches, I think.
Quite difficult to put on depending on style. If standard then you tuck one end into the petticoat waist, wrap material left to right round the body, then pleat up material and tuck into the front of petticoat waistband, leaving ample amount (the palu) to go over your front and shoulder - can pleat at the shoulder and pin for a more formal look. Needs a neatly fitting blouse which usually leaves the midriff bare.

Just wear what you feel comfortable with. I went to an Indian wedding. I simply wore a white dress. As Indian brides typically wear red dress. I was told by several people to avoid red. I don’t wear red anyway.

Bottomline if you give money make sure is ends in a £1. If you are going to give £20. Make it £21.

Funny how this is one area where ‘cultural appropriation’ is seen as desirable!
