Does anyone else find linen trousers uncomfortable in very hot weather?

I found last summer's heatwave very difficult to deal with. I'm menopausal, can't tolerate extremes of weather and take a medication which makes heat intolerance even harder to cope with.

So over the winter and spring I spent some money on loose fitting cotton tops and linen wide legged trousers as everything I googled says linen was one of the best fabrics to wear during extreme hot weather. It also said viscose so I purchased one pair of 100% viscose Palazzo pants.

Well, thank god for the latter because I have found all the linen trousers to be anything but cooling, I may as well wear a pair of jeans. Even the thinner ones are uncomfortable and sticky. I'm finding myself wearing the viscose ones all the time and changing into very thin cotton PJ's as soon as I get home.

Does anyone else find linen uncomfortable in the heat? The trousers are all 100% linen and fairly thin fabrics so not sure what went wrong.

Yes I do. Linen is awful - trousers, tops all of it 😀. It’s too hot, it bulky and its itchy!!! Horrid stuff.

Always 100% linen. I’m only wearing linen, cotton and viscose this summer, all 100% but the linen items (all different brands) I find so uncomfortable.

It was a bit cooler here yesterday so I wore a pair of my linen trousers and they were ok so I think I’ll save them for late spring and early autumn.

All 100%, or so the label says.

Linen is the uniform of middle aged men an women and it looks awful on everyone.

Nonsense, I posted the link to my two linen dresses up thread, the Reiss and the me and em one, there is nothing middle aged about them nor do they look awful

I also got this from reformation last week, in midnight and now ordered the mango, again nothing middle aged or awful looking about it.

i am middle aged, but these are dresses any age can wear, almost timeless and my daughter would happily borrow and thinks are fab.

I've seen too many arses in linen trousers the past few weeks bending down, squatting with thongs or nothing showing 🤮

My dd18 and her friends wear wide legged linen trousers with little cropped tops, I don’t think linen is specifically for us oldies lol!

I find that linen feels nice on me . I do wear silky chub rub pants underneath though .

I have two fab pairs of linen trousers from M&S that are just the most comfortable things ever. I always wear them travelling and it just feels like wearing pyjamas. In fact I might buy more in different colours 😊

As does my 20s daughter, she’s got a gorgeous pair of cream linen wide leg trousers she wears with a tight fitting semi cropped top.

i think tne posters view of linen is very dated, linen is very currenr right now, and it is far from thr thick linen of old. Where you see elderly gents in a cream linen suit and panama hat. It’s now often a very fine material, breathable, and If creasing is an issue, then some are mixed with other materials, ie viscose, to reduce it.

the navy reformation dress I posted up thread I wore twice last week, it creases round my hips, but as the body is form fitting, it doesn’t. The long skirt doesn’t either. It’s also very thin and cooling to wear.

its like velvet, it had a resurgence last autumn winter, in some beautiful luxurious silk blend fabrics,and looks far from the stuff of old.

time moves on. Materials improve.

I find all trousers unbearable in the heat, although I too have some very wide legs viscose palazzos which aren't too bad. But really skirts, dresses or shorts are best for hot weather.

I would find any trousers uncomfortable in hot weather. However I do wear a lot of linen and it's not itchy, hot, or uncomfortable. I couldn't care less if it creases, that is part of the attraction. You do need to spend a bit of money and buy quality linen however, cheap linen just isn't as good and I suspect it might be scratchy. I'm not a fan of viscose. On a really hot day you can't beat a loose linen dress.

I lived in linen blend trousers in 40+C heat.

I actually don't like linen. It's almost seemed shameful, because it's considered to be cool and more natural. But I actually prefer the soft of viscose and polyester more. That's not a popular thing, because polyester is made from petroleum, but I've long accepted that this is just a compromise I'm prepared to bare.

I bought a 100% cotton chambray dress (also known as light denim) last year for sightseeing in the heat. Stand-out sleeves and a tiered skirt, so lots of air flow.
Yes, it absorbed sweat and let it evaporate but in doing so it changed colour! I had a very fetching dark blue triangle across my back…

Summer linen needs to be smooth and translucent, but I rarely wear trousers in summer. Dresses every time.
Cheaper linen trousers often seem to be drawstring or elastic waist and give an unflattering “nappy bum”.

I love linen, but a lot of mine is quite old/secondhand so maybe better quality. I steam (not iron) before wearing and then any creases are just a little from wearing that day. I agree that the type of weave makes all the difference - though, this is true of any fabric.

A pp said about silk, I have a sleeveless, chiffon, silk top which is very cool in the heat, but tighter weave silk is sweaty.

Yes, linen needs ironing, as the washing machine crumples are the wrong type!

But I love the look of "worn in crumples" on linen.

I think looks wise, it just depends on the kind of textures you prefer. Linen will never look super smooth, my linen never looks completely crumpled but has some creases from wear.

I wear these loose cotton trousers when its hot. They are so cool and easy to wear with a nice teashirt. I dont like linen it just looks like a mess at the end of the day.

I am quite OCD and cant bear to look crumpled and creased. That's my main beef with linen. I wont wear anything that creases badly. DSis who lives in the tropics says if you buy very expensive linen it doesnt crease but we're talking a few hundred pounds for a pair of trousers.
