What’s the difference between your waist and hip measurements?

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 09:25

Mine is 8 inches.
Makes buying bottoms a pain because if it’s going to fit at the waist I need a smaller size than if it’s something to be designed to sit around the hips. Also if it’s going to sit around the waist and its trousers I need them to be a longer length because I’m quite tall.
Is this a regular difference between hips and waist? I was always quite self conscious about my hips being much larger, I mean objectively I know they’re not massive but it’s just annoying as it means I pretty much need to try things on in store or order the same item in about 4 different size/length options and then return what doesn’t fit. And I like wearing trousers and skirts along with dresses.
Just wondering if anyone else wants to vent to me about this irritating issue 😭😂

About 11 inches I think. I’m 5ft 10 and plus size though

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 09:36

Oh you’re taller than me!
Do you find it annoying to have to flit between sizes? Maybe it’s just me being difficult 🫠

i find sizing is mad anyway
I have two dresses both stretchy type jersey
one from asos size 14
one from asos curve size 24
i am neither of those sizes!

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 09:45

True, sizing is bonkers, someone I work with used to work in a suppliers role for a clothes company and they said their suppliers came from a few different companies and the sizes were all different depending on which country they’d been manufactured in based on what their own interpretation of what a size 12 was for example.
Measurements would be so much more helpful for women’s clothing rather than just an ambiguous number.
I tried on a vintage skirt the other day that was a size L, I’m an 8 on the waist, 10 on the hips; the skirt did up around my waist but I couldn’t breathe in it 😂
It sent me down a rabbit hole trying to find a chambray a-line skirt on vinted which is what made me start this thread.

10.5 inches and im not big either. Just very pear-shaped(big butt). Size 8 tops, 10 or occiassionally 12 bottoms. I hate jeans for this reason. Prefer fitted trousers with an elastic waist, leggings and skater dresses/skirts. I do find it frustrating. Trousers need to be high waisted to fit over my bubble butt.

Answering your title, my waist to hip ratio is 0.76, or in real world terms, 29" and 38", at 5ft 8". Sadly (not really) not quite reaching the old 'ideal' of ten inches difference 😆

I'm confused as to why this is a problem for you regarding clothing, though? Of course you need a different size for your waist vs your hips! If you're a healthy weight, then ideally your waist to hip ratio will be under 0.8, I believe.

And if you're wearing trousers higher up on your body, of course they need to be longer! But they would be cut quite differently, too. Trousers designed to sit on the waist would look silly bagging down at the hips with a deep crotch, and trousers cut to sit at the hips wouldn't have enough crotch depth to sit up around your waist!

FTBregret · Yesterday 09:56

I have always been insecure about my smallish hips and small bum, especially as I have PCOS and other masculine features such as hirsutism and thin hair. Just measured now and seems I have 9.5 inches difference

Growing up when the Kardashian’s were so popular also didn’t help (I never wanted the artificial bbl body type btw but I’m very jealous of women with naturally wider hips and a small waist, it looks so feminine).

I avoid any tight fitting bottoms, always go for a line, flared, loose jeans to mask my smaller hips.

I think high street clothing sizing is pretty off and incosistent generally though

3 and a half inches

I am literally a rectangle with very very little in the way of waist definition. I go up and down like a boy. I’m quite short at 5 foot 3 and I’m a size 8-10

It’s a problem for the reason I put in a previous post somewhere, it’s because I find myself needing to order multiple options to make one successful purchase!
I was just wondering if anyone else found the same. Seems my hip to waist difference isn’t big compared to others who have shared though 😂
it’s not always obvious on models online whether or not the trousers are designed to sit on the hips or the waist - I wonder if the websites I’m looking at use models with less curve at the hips so it’s not as easy to distinguish?

and yes I agree, trousers designed to sit at the waist do need to be longer and will be cut differently but it’s just not always clear to me whether or not the trousers are sitting on the models waist or hips, hence the needing to buy multiples. It’s semi helpful that some places state how tall the models are. I’m just having a Sunday moan 😂

Only about 5 ins. I dont have much shape at all! I have massive shoulders though.

OtterlyAstounding · Yesterday 10:13

It's just how the female body is shaped, on average. Smaller waist, and wider hips.

But yes, fair enough in terms of buying online!! I have resigned myself to never buying anything online if it isn't exactly the same product as something I already own, because if I can't try it on then there's no way to tell how it will actually fit. (Probably poorly!)

With clothing being photoshopped to look better, or even AI these days, and with the ridiculous poses models so often seem to pull, and all the height and measurement differences...it's safer just to buy in person.

ETA: Whoops, I meant this to quote your last post, OP - I don't know what happened there.

Stegosaur · Yesterday 10:18

29" waist, 39" hips, so an exact size 12. However, despite fitting perfectly into a size I too find that trousers which fit the hips still gape at the waist. It's a mystery!

In terms of whether you look hourglass or not, I'd like to point out that someone with wide hip bones but puny bum muscles would have the same hip measurement as someone with narrow hips and epic glutes! But these two women would have very different figures.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · Yesterday 10:22

29.5 waist, 39 hips. Size 12 and 5ft 6.

Flamingmentalcats · Yesterday 11:01

27" waist 39" hips size 14. Looking at shop size guides I am a size 10 or more often a size 12.
Haven't seen size 10 in years and 12's are too tight
I am 5'2" tall
Elasticated waists are my friend, perfect fit every time

Floisme · Yesterday 13:14

11 inch difference. Over the last year or so I've bought size 8, 10 and 12. Yes it makes buying online annoying because I have to order at least 2 and often 3 sizes, and don't get me started on retailers that charge for returns or even try and guilt trip you out of doing it. I'm not sure what can be done about it though as my local high street is now largely given over to vape shops and nail bars - the 'going to the shops and trying on' ship has sailed.

With vintage I'm typically a size 14.

kate6754 · Yesterday 13:17

Mine is 7 inches, 28 inch waist and 35 inch hips. My hips seem disproportionally narrow. I don’t tend to struggle to buy clothes though to be fair.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 13:29

24 waist, 31 hips - so yes, 7 inch difference

Tralalalalatata · Yesterday 13:35

13 inches. I am 36-25-38. 5ft7. Long legs and arms.

Everything I buy on the bottom has to be taken in at the waist! At least shirts I can tuck in. Thank goodness I have a wonderful seamstress basically on my doorstep.

DareDevil223 · Yesterday 13:53

26.5in waist and 37 hips. I'm 5ft 7 tall and a size 8/10. I often find that things are a bit big around the waist but I don't need to buy different sizes. I generally don't find it difficult to find clothes that fit well.

Floisme · Yesterday 15:26

To be fair, I don't find it particularly hard to find clothes that fit either, just as as long as I avoid dresses. What's annoying is that I rarely know without ordering and trying on whether it's going to be the size 8, 10 or 12 that fits. Even brands that I've worn before are rarely consistent these days. It wasn't an issue when I still had a half decent high street and could try on before buying but those times are gone.

PurpleCoo · Yesterday 15:32

It doesn't sound as though the difference between your hips and waist is that big. The difference between mine is 8 as well and I consider myself to just have a normal curvy figure/hourglass shape. The biggest problem I have is that most clothes seem to be designed for flat chested people! I am 37.5 bust, 29 waist and 37 hips. I just go with clothes that suit my shape better and tend to wear dresses with fitted waists, or that can go with a belt. The only trousers I own are hiking trousers and I find it varies by brand. I find the slim cut ones fit better. Some have ridiculously roomy legs and these ones seem to also be overly generous with the hips. I have no idea why so many hiking trousers have ridiculously large legs (width not length). I don't exactly have skinny legs. I do lots of weights and resistance work and have really solid toned legs with a thigh circumference of 20.5 inches!

lindyloo57 · Yesterday 16:27

It's around 7 inches 30 waist 37 hips, always have problems fitting jeans as to fit my waist i need a size12 but hips are a size10 before menopause my waist was 27/ 28 which was a bit easier

TealReader · Yesterday 19:47

14in. Could be size 10/12/14 depending on the cut. Makes it difficult to buy online and I have a fairly big tailoring bill.

Chipshopsiblingwar · Yesterday 19:56

25in waist and 32inch hips so 7 inchs 5ft 7

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · Yesterday 20:37

13.5 inches
I am 5 ft 11 that makes it slightly better

Except it doesn’t, as nothing fits.
