I second Onitsuka tigers, I’ve had them all, all the brands, and these are the comfiest I’ve ever owned, I can walk for miles in them, they are not bulky on and low profile, but have hidden arch support. Look great with all clothing.

They’re lovely, but what a price!

If you want to protect your joints and back, go Joya.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 12/07/2026 17:39

Don’t get Sketchers or those Gabor ones, they’re really outdated and in your 50s there’s no reason to just give up. The Mexico 66 OT’s are a good shout, they have quite a high instep which isn’t for everyone, but they’re a contemporary classic.

They’re lovely, but what a price!

They are pricey for what are basically plimsolls but for me, cost per wear is pennies. I have had the white canvas pair for 3 years. If they get grubby I just put them through the machine and I wear them probably 5 days out of 7 from April to September. @PhaedraTwo has me circling the ballet ones!

LiveLuvLaugh · 12/07/2026 19:32

I love my Gola trainers. Forest green and bright yellow trim. I hate a white sole, I think it’s jarring, Golas are a neutral fudge colour and they aren’t chunky. I have no idea if they are fashionable though - I wear what I love in my 50s.

outerspacepotato · 12/07/2026 19:37

I like my Onisuka Tigers but my Air Rifts are even more comfortable.

I suspect that’s true but they are a very particular taste, the split toe look for me is awful. I think the op is looking more for something deemed fashionable rather than comfort irrelevant of appearance.

Can no age group escape the tyranny of trainers? I’d go for ballet flats, sandals, wedges, ankle boots —- anything but a style more than a decade old and boring af.

You’re on the wrong thread.

cuppitycakes · 12/07/2026 20:51

Does anyone else find that the New Balance 327’s come up a bit small ?

persisted · 12/07/2026 20:58

Adidas gazelles for me, love the liberty ones.

Trainers are timeless. (Unlike wedges and ballet flats which are really quite naff.)

If you don’t like them, obviously don’t wear them, but complaining about ‘the tyranny of trainers’ is a bit like complaining about ‘the tyranny of jeans’ or ‘the tyranny of t-shirts’. Trainers aren’t a trend; they’re a wardrobe staple. As with jeans and tees, specific trainer styles certainly emerge and evolve, but trainers themselves are a staple and there are a million ways to wear them.

BruFord · 12/07/2026 21:31

Adidas sneakers are in where I am and comfortable. I've got the Grand Court Lo ones in pale pink because they go with lots of outfits. DD (21) also has some in a different colour.

Edit to say that I only use them for walking around not serious exercising. I bought them to be comfortable and look decent on a city break, and they were ideal.

Moistcottonchafers · 12/07/2026 21:41

Adidas Originals Tokyo. I have the ponyskin zebra print style and get lots of compliments.

mumumental · 12/07/2026 21:42

Those flat trainers like Stan Smith are deeply uncomfortable for most of us with arches.

@Moistcottonchafers I was tempted to get an animal print but I wasn't brave enough to. Thought I was too old, which is daft, but I like the pale pink too.😂

I love Fairfax & Favor for something more smart and ON for the sports casual.

Here they're considered very fashionable by the creative types and ugly hoof shoes by others.😂

But it really is like walking on air.

Another Onitsuka Mexico 66 fan here. I can walk very comfortably for hours in mine and they look 'quietly stylish', as a fellow MNer put it some years ago .

I’m sorry, but they’re awful!

I absolutely love those and if you’re into fashion they’re very “in”. Just shows how different we all are!

Ballet flats are hardly a new invention are they?

I’m 45 and I love Hoff trainers. They come in loads of colours and they’re insanely comfortable. Much better for wearing all day than Adidas

I second Hoffs although mine are mainly black so not really for floaty dresses (I have some white Nikes for that). Adidas are cool but they’ve never fitted my awkward feet.

Sketchers. So comfy, lots of styles to suit everyone.

No.

Tyranny?? I don't think you know what that word means 🤣

And for those of us who like to walk eveywhere, trainers are the best choice.
