5 foot, overweight, no idea how to dress

Hi everyone I am hoping a few people can help, I am absolutely lost in what way to dress. I have no confidence at all at the moment and just have no sense of style. My go to is jeans and a band tshirt or if "dressing up" its jeans, a loose top and a long cardigan.
I am in my 30's, I am very short (5ft) and overweight at a size 16-18. I have really short big legs and I hate my arms so arms out is a no go.

I am not a flowery/colourful clothing lover, i tend to wear black not because its "slimming" but because I am just not a flowery/pattern/colourful type of person.

I have a really special night out coming up and I would love to look nice/slightly sexy but not over the top, Ive been looking on next etc to see about a nice top but everything has arms out and I dont know what to pair with tops like this that isn't a longline cardigan?
If anyone can help I would be so greatful, I carry my weight all over but my legs and arms are by far the worst. Im just totally lost, i look after my hair and am good with makeup its just my style I can't seem to get right.
Thank you

Suggest you buy petite size as otherwise the proportions are all wrong. Try an online order from Next and try different things on (return what doesn't suit you). Avoid large patterns and black. Matalan also do things in petite and I've bought some nice trousers from there. Check out the.petite.lady on Instagram who wears petite confidently.

I am 5 ft 1 and I completely agree with this. If you can find what you like in petite sizing, it will fit so much better. Petite ranges are always pretty minimal but I recently discovered that Roman has a big petite range. And a simple outfit can look stunning with good styling and accessories. Good luck.

I agree with this. I'm 5ft and try to only buy petite as otherwise the proportions are all wrong. I also follow The Petite Lady on Instagram as she shows a good range of high street and premium outfits.

I'm about your height and weight and was surprised to find how confident I felt in a jump suit - I have a plain black one from Next that looks great with a t-shirt under it or dressed up with a mesh 3/4 sleeve and chunky silver jewellery.

I've also just bought some balloon troursers in various colours - Tesco and Next. I wear them with a solid matching colour tank top and a short fitted cardigan in a different colour.

I asked Gemini and it came up with tips for a whole wardrobe. Really useful stuff. Give it a go.

I'm 5 feet. Size 14. Love black, hate flouncy floral clothes. I find tighter clothes are better than baggier. Get some good support underwear. When i need to dress up a bit i wear a black midi pencil skirt and a black scoop neck 3/4 sleeve top. Wrap tops are good too. Heels are good if you can wear them. Dress it up with jewellery.

I'd steer clear of Wilson & Carter, looks like the "English" name is a front https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/wilson-and-carter.com and the items aren't very clear on what the material is.

Edited

Just googled it myself as, although I liked some of the clothes, it gave me a not genuine shop vibe. I’d be wary of it.

Without knowing more I automatically picture you in a Boho blouse like this, but maybe in a plain colour.

Oh yes I’ve just checked that too!! Looks like it should be avoided

I buy a lot of my clothes from wolf fairy. They have an online shop but they will make the garments to suit! If you ask them to make the length longer or shorter or the sleeves to order, they will. I always seem to find plus size clothes have major long sleeves so I just ask them to make them a bit shorter. 👍

Dodgy looking website, the photos, the layout and the 'everything must go' bargains.

Ha, edited, sorry missed everyone else saw the same.

I am also 5 foot, after losing 2 stone I am now in a 12 or 14, but my big problem area is my stomach. I still look 6 months pregnant. In some ways that was less of a problem at size 16. Weight went down from everywhere but there.
however, my current frustration is that even petite trousers and jeans drag on the floor by some inches. Looking at you, M and S and Next. On a very tight budget, does anyone know where does petite length that might be short enough?
