School play suits with buttons

NewPhotos · 02/07/2026 15:07

DD is fussy and will only wear school playsuits with buttons. They all seem to be zip fastening (which makes sense) but she complains the zips scratch her.

She’s 9 going on 10 so can hold her wee! Wears size 11-12 as tall.

I have looked at TU, George, H&M, M&S, Next and Vinted. I could get separates but wondered if anyone had ideas of where I haven’t looked at?

Thanks

What’s a play suit?

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 02/07/2026 23:51

Do they still wear them in year 5? (Or 6, whichever one she’s going into). In my daughters school , they seem to stop around year 3, maybe 4.

I’ve never seen any with buttons. But I have seen the little gingham shirts and shorts with buttons on the shirt if she’d consider those. Also easy for a wee.

I've not seen any playsuits with buttons

Probably because they think it would be too fiddly for the children to undo when they need to

NewPhotos · 03/07/2026 08:02

We have some already which she is growing out of but clearly not popular. She finds the zips uncomfortable and won’t wear them.

Where did you get them from

I'm presuming you've looked at the same place so maybe they've stopped making them

SoScarletItWas · 03/07/2026 08:11

Would a front zip be less annoying than a back zip?

They've all got zip fastenings at the front rather than the back

That was what OP was saying she didn't want

She didn’t specify where the zips she’d seen were. I appreciate I misunderstood the assignment as I’ve only just learned of the existence of a school play suit.

hahabahbag · 03/07/2026 08:17

Normal dress with shorts under, that’s what all the girls wear at our local primary

Abouteffingtime · 03/07/2026 08:17

OP means for school, so the gingham style. Like the summer dresses only with shorts i think.

Yes I have learned this today!

Never seen any school playsuits with zips at the back

You wouldn't be able to reach them to go to the toilet would you

Or with difficulty

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 03/07/2026 09:08

I don't think they exist, for exactly the practicality reasons that others have mentioned. I don't see girls older than LKS2 wearing them so I don't think there's much demand.

A few places do gingham school shorts, e.g. M&S https://www.marksandspencer.com/girls-gingham-school-shorts-3-14-yrs-/p/clp60712852. If they do the right colour she could wear these under a dress.

NewPhotos · 03/07/2026 09:52

Yes, a school playsuit. We have regular pull on playsuits. They DID exist as we have some (Asda). Sadly it appears they don’t anymore. I tried. I guess it will be separates or keep reviewing Vinted.

She won’t wear shorts and a dress. She has done but has it in her head she looks bad in dresses and won’t wear them now 🤷‍♀️. She’s very stubborn.

It’s not a big issue, I appreciate, but given the increasing temperatures, I’d like her to be comfortable and it will probably still be warm in September.

Interesting, I can't say I'd be a fan of any item of clothing that required taking off type removal to go to the loo.

SunsetDrifter · 03/07/2026 10:11

My daughter is fussy with labels etc touching her but has never complained about the zip bothering her, we get the tu ones (she's 10) she wears a crop top underneath and is very comfortable. Maybe your daughter needs to try them on from different shops until she finds one that is comfortable? Button up ones are completely impractical for going to the loo which is why they no longer make them.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 03/07/2026 10:56

Could she wear a dress with bike shorts underneath?

Especially ones that risk touching the floor in minging school toilets.

Exactly, it's even worse than regular public loos or ones in shops and restaurants. That said, the styling is quite nice as an item of clothing. Mother of boys here

I manage to do zips up the back on all my dresses and jumpsuits and I’m 54, not a lithe 11 year old 🤣

Top tip: thread a ribbon through the zip if needed.

Is there someone local to you who does alterations? They may be able to replace the zip with buttons.

Sliperzzzzz · 03/07/2026 13:40

Could she wear shorts? Or culottes? In grey or whatever colour the boys' shorts are. They allow this at our school.
