School play suits with buttons

DD is fussy and will only wear school playsuits with buttons. They all seem to be zip fastening (which makes sense) but she complains the zips scratch her.

She’s 9 going on 10 so can hold her wee! Wears size 11-12 as tall.

I have looked at TU, George, H&M, M&S, Next and Vinted. I could get separates but wondered if anyone had ideas of where I haven’t looked at?

Thanks

Thanks all. I have ordered some gingham shorts off Vinted which she can wear with a white t shirt similar to their PE kit (who decided white was a good colour for PE?!) so we’ll see how that goes.

As a PP says, she might decide it’s babyish to wear summer uniform by next summer.

They were still wearing playsuits in my child's school all the way through

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/07/2026 15:08

Mine didn’t like anything with a zip at that age because the boys thought it was funny to pull the zip down.

I work in a First school, and I mostly look after Year 3/4 and I think I've only seen 2-3 girls wearing playsuits. Most wear the school dress with shorts underneath.

I'd be surprised girls would be still wearing playsuits come Year 5 upwards. My son stopped wearing school shorts once he started Year 7, at secondary school, even though they are permitted.

Play suits have been much more popular than dresses - I loved it when they started becoming more common in the shops. I have never seen buttons though. Could you convert a larger sized dress with buttons and just sew up the middle of the skirt to create shorts? It might be worth a bit of experiment if she’s less keen on the gingham short look.

What colour is the playsuit?

DD wore hers all the way to the end of y6 so she might not change her mind if she finds it comfortable.

This John Lewis one looks nice and goes to older ages. I know it’s zip but it might be lined/better quality.

Could you get her a matching gingham blouse? If she tucks it in it will look similar to the playsuit I think?

But different schools have different ‘fashions’ for want of a better word.

The OP wants information, not a grown woman expressing surprise that a ten year old wants to wear a play suit. Maybe you should get out more, see the world so you aren’t so ‘surprised’ that some children wear different clothes from other children.

I got my daughter gingham shorts and a gingham blouse from TU Sainsbury, because im not a fan of the knickers constantly being on display in a dress, and she would never manage to get a playsuit off in time for the toilet. Might be worth a look as it basically looks like a playsuit but its split in the middle.

Okiedokie123 · 03/07/2026 20:45

Ive learnt something today! I had no idea playsuits as school uniform was a thing. They must be a bit tricky for a kid to manage when going to the loo? But presumably quick on and off for PE.

NewPhotos · 03/07/2026 21:04

@Okiedokie123Well that’s the reason for the zips! But DD doesn’t like them….hence asking.

I don’t think playsuits are necessarily for younger children. They look pretty similar to dresses IMO. But for whatever reason DD has rejected dresses both for school and home.

Shorts and blouse is great idea. Tu do them to age 11 and 20% off.

Buy the ones with zips that fit her and have a dressmaker (or you if you can sew) make a placket with bottons and buttonholes to replace the zip. Buy a few so the dressmaker can alter ghem all at once, being more ecconomical with cotton etc.

AwwShucksOhWell · 04/07/2026 07:40

If she doesn't accept the shorts, could you alter one with a zip? If you took the zip out and then sewed a strip of fabric (or even tough ribbon or binding tape) into the seams the zip had been on one side, you could put buttons on to it and put buttons holes in the other side... It wouldn't take too long and should look pretty decent. If the extra strip of fabric was white, I doubt it would even be noticable, so long as you could do it neatly.

Yes. Well that's why I should read all the thread first... 😅

You could also get button down summer dresses and have them altered into playsuits

UhOhRatPoo · 04/07/2026 15:24

Or could you just add some sort of soft fabric backing to the zip on the inside to stop it scratching?
