Best hairdryer for long, thick hair

Stylish ones,

I need your help.

I am in need of a new hairdryer and would love to cut down on the time it takes to dry my hair.

My hair is long, very thick and if left to dry naturally I resemble Monica in that episode of Friends where they go on holiday to the Carribean!

I'm willing to spend a decent chunk of money on something that will genuinely save me time, but I don't want to be disappointed. I've had a GHD hairdryer before and wasn't that impressed, currently using a Panasonic one. Are the Shark or Dyson ones worth the money? Would love to get some reviews and recommendations from others who have long, thick hair 🙂

I can't help with Shark or Dyson but I have long, very thick hair and I went for a Parlux after researching same thing years ago and it did cut the drying time from my previous hairdryer and gives my hair a good finish. I can't check the model as I am on holiday but I've had it for years now and would probably replace with another Parlux.

I have a Dyson. It’s great but it still takes forever to get my hair dry.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 28/06/2026 18:57

I have a shark and I regret it, takes forever to dry my hair and I never bother with all the nozzles! My gym had GHD Helios and it’s a million times better than the shark one.

LoafofSellotape · 28/06/2026 19:01

I had a Parlux for years ,it's brilliant,I had the Alyon, then Dh surprised me with a Dyson and it's really good and really fast and is replace it tomorrow. I also have Monica hair so I feel your pain .

If you go for a Dyson it's worth remembering that unless you want one with all the bells and whistles ones that are on sale and cheaper are just cheaper as they're last year's colour. Dh got mine from Argos and it was over £100 cheaper than the newer colour.

It sounds like we have similar hair. I have a shark but wouldn’t recommend it. Not particularly quick and definitely not smooth afterwards. I actually think my daughter’s cheap little Remington does a better job!

AAudreyHorne · 28/06/2026 19:02

You need to look for hairdryers with good power as opposed to high heat.
I have an ETI which cut my drying time by half.

I've a friend who says it's noisy and heavy.

I had a Parlux and switched to a Dyson.

The difference in drying time wasn’t huge (Dyson was a couple of minutes faster) but the game changer for me was how light the Dyson is compared to my Parlux.

Having long thick hair it wasn’t just about how long it took to dry in terms of convenience- but more about the strain in my arms 😂.

Not used the Shark but you’d have to prise my Dyson from my cold dead hands and if it broke I would absolutely buy another.

All that said I also have the new generation Dyson air wrap and I absolutely would not recommend that for long thick hair. The hairdryer element is poor compared to the Dyson hairdryer and the attachments just don’t hold a curl in my thick long hair (I can do better with a round brush and my hairdryer or better still my straighteners).

DeedlessIndeed · 28/06/2026 19:05

I have the Dyson supersonic R which I can highly recommend.

The flyaway attachment is better than battling through my thick, slightly wavy hair with a straightener and it comes out really smooth.

I also rate that attachment on my hair.

I've never heard of ETI. Do you mind me asking what model you have and is your hair also long and thick? Thanks

I have the 3500 turbo dryer.
I used to have long thick hair and hated drying it. My hairdresser friend recommended an ETI, she put them on par with Parluxe but they're much cheaper. It made such a difference, don't need it as hot so it doesn't damage my hair as much and dries my shorter hair in about 45 seconds.

If I got my paws on the Dyson that I bought I would tell you Grin.
My DD "borrowed" it every time she washed her hair then gradually it was never returned to me .
I have an AirStrait , my hair isn't long or thick so this suits me better .(except the dryer has a diny round plug and the AirStrait has a huge chunky plug )

It dries DD hair really quickly , you can adjust the heat settings and attachments .
She loves it . Yes it is ££ but worth it .

It’s absolutely important to ask hair type wrt these recommendations.

My DM for example tried my Dyson and can’t see what the fuss is about (she inherited my Parlux btw).

But she has chin length/bobbed hair that’s quite fine and frankly took less than 5 mins to dry with the 10 year old Braun she had. A Dyson (tbf even a Parlux) would be a waste of money for her.

I on the other hand have my father’s hair……which is a totally different ball game and (as I learned to my cost when I once decided to sport a style just touching shoulder length) needs to be long enough to weigh itself down or it just ends up - even with layers - looking like a very fat pyramid 😂.

LoafofSellotape · 28/06/2026 19:33

Dyson is £199 on Amazon at the moment.

I've used an ETI ,it's comparable to a Parlux but I agree with the PP who said it's about how light the Dyson is which makes it so good.

Hmmm. I can definitely see the appeal of a super light hair dryer but, on balance, I think cutting the time it takes to dry takes priority for me.

I am on my third Dyson hairdryer. I’d like to ditch it because they all succumb to the same fate- they start overheating- but it def the best hairdryer and I’ve had a GHD and a parlux in the past (admittedly a good few years ago now so can’t compare to newer models).

It's definitely quicker than the Parlux for my Monica hair. I held off buying one for years and I hate myself for loving it so much 🤣

How long do they last? That's disappointing!

Chiapotayto · 28/06/2026 20:45

I had a Dyson that’s a few years old and I hated it, made my hair frizzy and rough.

Was gifted the Dyson Supersonic Nural which I was secretly disappointed as thought Dyson doesn’t work for me. Actually, using the styling attachment, I now blow dry my hair straight and I barely use my hair straighteners or hot air brush anymore.

rollerblind · 28/06/2026 21:02

@LoafofSellotape
they lasted for couple of years I’d say. But, in Dyson’s defence, both times I sent the broken one back and was able to buy a new one at a discounted price (£100 off maybe), or I was offered a reconditioned one at an even cheaper rate but without the warranty.

Omg a couple of years? That's shite! I got 10 years out of my first Parlux!

Yeah I don't mind paying Dyson prices in theory, but not if I'm only going to get a couple of years use out of it.
