OP I go to a lot of black tie events with work and the jumpsuit is definitely suitable if you wear blingy gold jewellery, hair up and heels. It looks lovely on you too.
If you want to buy a new dress, look at the Asos sale as they have some reasonably priced options.

It’s really not. Unless your event is very corporate.

The blue Dorothy that velvetandleather linked is lovely, keep it simple like that if you are not used to fancy frocks, £5! Your best bet is just order 5 or 6 from eBay or vinted, you will love at least one of them x

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 27/06/2026 08:43

@FebruaryUsername The jump suit doesn’t look great and is not black tie. The jersey stretchy dress isn’t either really but it’s 100% more flattering!

PolaDeVeboise · 27/06/2026 09:07

Thanks @Velvetandleather, you guessed correctly! The blue one is lovely. Not a fan of a single shoulder though, as large of nork!

The dress is a little casual and the jumpsuit looks like it doesn’t fit quite right. If you are large of boob (me too, makes finding outfits a nightmare!), having a sleeve that ends right at the fullest part of the bust can make you look quite wide and square - a slightly longer or shorter sleeve would be better.

If you’re comfortable in the shape of the dress can you look for a similar style but in a more formal fabric?

MissVerucaSalt · 27/06/2026 09:20

It’s just occurred to me - I bought an amazing dress a few years ago for a black tie do that I love love love. Never wore it as I had to have emergency surgery and am no longer the right size for the dress, nor will I ever have another occasion to wear it! It deserves to be worn. If you’d like it, you’re welcome to it!

it’s this dress but in the colour in the pic. (Not my pic - I’m out and about so I nabbed it off someone’s Vinted listing!) I’d be happy for you to have it if you like it. :)

EDIT: it’s saying photo under review, so spoiler alert - it’s a more jewel toned, darker purple.

I think the dress is more appropriate than the jumpsuit. You can make it look more formal with the right shoes and accessories

Sandysandybeaches · 27/06/2026 09:33

totally disagree with velvets ai black tie description. That description is more appropriate for a very formal ball in winter, not a summer black tie event in an English garden - op would be way overdressed in a full length velvet gown! , in the uk black tie absolutely does not have to be floor length and cocktail dress length is fine as are elegant trousers. Avoid cotton jersey , cord but fabrics do not have to be velvet etc. The key to looking appropriate is the fit, the hair & make up and accessories- your dress is the sort that will dress up or down and if you feel good in it will be perfect. Shoulders back, big smoke and you are good to go - if you look uncomfortable or apologetic it will dress down!

The jumpsuit isn't even "work event at a mid market hotel, mid week" black tie.

The dress is fine. It's long, dark and could be glammed up. It wouldn't win any best dress category but OP wouldn't stick out.

Marwoodsbigbreak · 27/06/2026 09:37

No mate. I would wear it to Tesco

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 27/06/2026 09:39

No, too casual OP. Sorry.

Motnigh · 27/06/2026 09:40

What a lovely offer @MissVerucaSalt. Op hope you are finding this thread useful.

PolaDeVeboise · 27/06/2026 09:45

Thank you so much for the offer @MissVerucaSalt, so kind. However, the event is next weekend, and it’s due to be hot, so fear I would overheat with that beautiful cape!

Yes, I know, I’m leaving it late!

I think the green jumpsuit is more suitable but it is a bit corporate do rather than black tie. It’s a shame it’s next weekend or you could’ve looked on Vinted, I find it frustrating to buy brand new outfits for an event that I will probably not wear again!

MissBridgetJones · 27/06/2026 09:54

Have a look at John Lewis rental… lots of Whistles dresses to rent for £40

LaMarschallin · 27/06/2026 10:02

Sandysandybeaches

I know that's autocorrect for "big smile" but now I've got visions of the OP accessorising with an Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" style cigarette holder (fake, of course).

corblimeygvnr · 27/06/2026 10:18

It's too casual.

PolaDeVeboise · 26/06/2026 22:17

Is this better, or does it look cheap?

I like this but it's not giving me black tie vibes.

bellventrico · 27/06/2026 10:41

Sorry it's neither from me - dress is a day maxi job and jump suit is lovely but not black tie- if money is an issue try charity shops or Vinted

noshade · 27/06/2026 10:51

I'd say either outfit would be suitable for summer black tie, but the dress suits you better.

This is gorgeous!!!!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/06/2026 00:04

Velvet is totally a no for summer black tie. Floaty long florals or plain palazzo pants with an evening top are really good. The weather is cooling next week. Black tie is not uber formal - that’s white tie. Black tie is one notch down and is more flexible, but it should be glam and better fabrics look best. Agree not jersey. Jump suits are just a bit dated really. A good floaty maxi dress that hangs well is perfect.

PeonyBulb · 28/06/2026 00:07

Absolutely not
